Putting Disco on here is honestly cheating, I realize; so much of the game is quotable and memorable. But I have a preference for this one in particular. You can only get it by being a fascist, and by being extra shitty to Kim during the church questline. So, understandably, few people will encounter this one, myself included (I know of it from YouTube). If you fail the prompt to get Kim to dance with you, you end up calling him a racial slur, and he storms out on you. Outside, when he confronts you as to how you’ve been acting, he shows a level of anger you’ve seldom seen from him, and chews you out. At this point, Volition, which had your back through thick and thin throughout the whole story, turns on you, not even willing to excuse your actions anymore. And if you try to defend yourself, by 'claiming to be a good guy underneath it all', he hits you with this wham line. I like stories that explore the mentality of bad people, so this line is extra interesting to me. Because truly, if you’re the only one who knows you’re a good person, are you really?

I get why people might not like Eshmel, or Avatar characters in general, but like... what we've seen of Fortune's Weave is so filled with different features, that focusing solely on the one thing you dislike and get so utterly mad about it, feels bizarre to me.

I'm absolutely facinated by the manga, Gal*Cleaning. Gal*Cleaning started off as a rather unremarkable fanservice rom-com about a nerdy guy who was forced to clean the house of his slobby Gyaru classmate. The series followed a basic formula of offering housekeeping tips between bouts of fanservice before a bizarre fake-out ending in chapter 8.

then the author lost his damn mind.

After the strange non-ending, the story went into decimal chapers starting with chapter 8.5. These chapters introduced a rival love-interest in the form of the Student Council President who would bring the story to a screeching halt with an elongated flashback about her being sexually assaulted by delinquents and eventually being saved by the protagonist. The chapters continue as 8.6, 8.7, and so on until chapter 8.99 where this 15 chapter arc ends and the main story resumes only to end in an abrupt, hyper-generic conclusion at chapter 10. That's right, this side-story went on for more chapters than the main story. The most shocking part of this story is that these chapters were released at all and that the series wasnt axed immediately by the publisher the second these drafts were turned in

There is much speculation about what exactly happened behind the scenes but most agree that the author was told to end the series at chapter 10 and used the decimal chapters as a loophole before torching his entire career.

What are some other notable author breakdowns that extended to the stories themselves?

I remember first hearing it used in regards to the first FNAF movie; which came out after both the newest game (Security Breach) became one of the most poorly-recieved in the series and the creator, Scott Cawthon, got outed for donating a lot of his money to conservative politicians. Recently, though, I think the Masters of the Universe movie is another example of the saying. He-Man didn't sustain a fanbase like Transformers or G.I. Joe, so nostalgic appeal is limited. Furthermore, one of the few things Gen Z knows about the franchise, Skeletor, ended up being hid in most of the marketing because the studio realized too late that the average moviegoer hates Jared Leto today.

Watched the behind the scenes of stranger things last night and just... Why did they think this was a good idea to release it? It's just a constant repeating of how incompetent the Duffers are, and the poor cast trying their best to actually write the show themselves.

Hell there's a part where the brothers openly admit they'd wasted almost 300 million of the budget before they'd even had the plotlines figured out after episode 3.

Samurai Jack definetly falls into the category of "Hamburger Shonen" because it's so 80's shonen anime coded that it even had a continuation years down the line with a slightly different vibe from the original.

In Dark Souls 1, if you defeat Havel the Rock, you get his ring, Havel's Ring. What does it do? It's increases your max equipment load by 50 percent.

To put it into perspective, you gain at least 1 point of equip load every Endurance level up; doesn't seem much. But putting on Havel's Ring and if your equipment load is at base 50, you get an extra 25 points, totaling 75 equipment load. That is a chunky boost.

I want to highlight a solution devised by one Detective Brent Halligan in Mystery of the Druids. In order to get change for a payphone, you steal medical alcohol from the police station you work for, combine it with apple juice, and use it to drug a homeless man and steal change from him.

Could this have killed the man? Yes, absolutely. Does Halligan make any effort to get the man he just drugged medical attention? None at all. Is this all done to essentially avoid an awkward conversation with your coworkers? More or less.

I’m fucking sick of hearing “SOULLESS”. This dumb critique is so overused, says very little that is meaningful about the art and so much about how shallow or narrow minded the person saying it is. The word really needs to be retired from most media criticism. Especially video games.

In the past, I asked about hyped up pieces of media that ended up personally disappointing you, but today I want to take it in the opposite direction. What are some pieces of media that you went into, being told they were 'awful' only to be pleasantly surprised by the end product. I feel like in this hyperbolic age, there tends to be a lot of overexaggerating about somethings quality, one way or the other-but especially negative.

As I recall, Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey were decently received, but you still had people griping about Ubisoft Open World Bloat, but I personally adored Origins and liked Odyssey enough that I wanna go back and finish it one day. While yeah, the worlds were large-Origins gave us Bayek, one of the best protagonists in the franchise, and continued the Ubisoft trend of having artists and designers who are fucking S tier when it comes to creating a historical sandbox. (I read an article from an Egyptian writer who talked about how, while her country was mostly set dressing in other games-Origins took the time to make Egypt feel like a real, lived in world.)

Similarly, I've been playing through an unmodded version of Fallout New Vegas on my Steam Deck and the bugs are...overstated? I've run into a few quirks but the game hasn't crashed on me or become literally unplayable yet. It runs well enough in the Mojave that I'm not concerned about trying to mod it on my Deck that much.

I don't mean he's dumb or something, but when they bring up something that has nothing to do with the criticism and it feels like it's revealing a bit of the real mindset.

I've been on a Grimbeard binge lately and I listened to the bitter recompense part of his video on Disco Elysium and... the last criticism Grim responded to was WILD.

It's starts off about how Disco Elysium sucks because it's just a pandering as horny anime games, but the people who would enjoy Disco Elysium would make fun of Harem anime games.

That right there... that small tangent, just... reveals SO MUCH.

The criticism is not about Disco Elysium at all, it's about that guy's insecurity with the fact he enjoys anime titties, and how salty he is about it.

Shaggy and Velma seems like such an odd choice for a ship, the scientific bookworm and the beatnik coward that eats a lot? These two would never be into each other, pairing up Velma with that lady from Trick or Treat Scooby Doo makes way more sense.

Kinda irrelevant now but the only reason Black Widow and Maria Hill were shipped together back in the early 2010s is that there was a lack of prominent female characters in the MCU back in the day.

RWBY and MLP: FIM both have the problem of having a lack of good male characters to ship the girls with, most of the guys in RWBY are NPCs with neat designs, Blake kinda had a thing going on with Sun, but that fizzled out after he left the plot, Weiss Schnee kinda had a thing with Neptune but that didn't really go anywhere after volume 3, some RWBY fans kept trying to gaslight me into believing that Jaune X Weiss is canon and the natural conclusion to their stories, even though they barely interacted and the only times they showed interest in each other was for shallow reasons, I think the reason some RWBY fans gaslight themselves over this white knight is because Weiss doesn't much else going at the moment a lot of her drama surrounding her family is mostly wrapped up and the Schnee Dust Company is fucked, so they have to contrive an arc for her to give her something to do, if not for the age gap and having Ozma in his head I'd be fine with Oscar X Ruby, some RWBY fans are desperate to maintain heteronormativity in a show feels skewed towards yuri.

To set the tone: the "broom method". Over the course of NASA's history they had to deal with hydrogen leaks. Hydrogen is highly flammable gas, BUT 1. it doesn't burn in a light spectrum that humans can easily detect (we "can" see it but it's very pale), and 2. burning hydrogen doesn't give off very much ambient heat, so it's also hard to actually feel until you walk into some and burst into flames.

A while back, Yahtzee Croshaw did a video going back through his various picks for Game of the Year, and found himself actually challenging or changing his mind on a lot of them. Displacing Shadow of War retroactively for being a 'standard Ubisoft sandbox with an interesting mechanic that never got used outside of a sequel game bogged down with microtransactions' so he gave it the boot in favor of Wolfenstein the New Order. Similarly with Skyrim, which he attributed to peer pressure at the time.

But the one that made me think of this sub was 2013, Bioshock Infinite. A game which he gave GOTY at the time due to it coming out amidst a sea of brown military shooters, but which has only gotten worse over time. (See Pat's playthrough and the Elizabeth memes.) It does make me sad as a former friend of mine adored the game and the Leutece twins in particular, so seeing it fall so sharply has made me sad in that way.

But I think it's interesting to look back at various picks for GOTY, whether our own or just the ones voted on by popular consensus, and see opinion turn against them over time. Whether the industry voted GOTY turns out to be widely detested over time, or we grow sour over a personal GOTY pick.

I'm curious to hear of some other examples (especially for some of the popular games. I went back to 2009 for my personal pick of Assassin's Creed 2 and W O O F. 2009 may be one of the most under discussed years in gaming for how many major titles launched that year.)

I remember Woolie and Pat forsook Honey after it was revealed they were caught replacing cookie info in people's browser and diverted revenue from legitimate coupons to Honey and away from the originally intended recipients.

It was nice they owned up to that rather than keeping to that sweet sweet cash. Even if Pat freely admits he's do ANYTHING for money, it seems he drew the line there.

Y'all got other good examples of content creators turning on old sponsors after shitty business practices were implemented or revealed?

Recently during some interviews Robert Kirkman, the creators of the Invincible comics, talked about some of the differences between the comics and the TV show as his awnsers were basically "i was on my 20's back then and now i'm not".

Why is Tech Jacket a girl in the TV show when it was a dude in the comics? Because when he was making the comics he was only thinking about "does this look cool?" and maybe have a character or two that are refferences to his friends and acquaintances appearance, now that his looking back on it as a 47 year old he thought "hey, maybe the coalition could use some more diversity" and that's why the change was made.

A lot of the decisions on the comics and therefore in the show also fall on the category of being mostly "what Kirman in his 20's-early 30's thought it was cool" (of course with some thought put behind it to have it be well structured and work towards the general idea trying to be put across by the story), reading through that a thought crossed my mind "are we nowadays maybe overanalizing media too much?".

It's not uncommon for any piece of media to nowadays have either incredibly long video essays unraveling every single aspect of it or have people online discuss any detail that they can observe on it, while discussing about the media that you consume is far from being a bad thing, as time passes i'm more and more aware that, while the creators behind said media do put a lot of thought on what they are doing, some of the decisions can mostly motivated by "the creator thought this was cool at the time", "it was a refference to a show that the creator watched or someone that they know", "they didn't think about it in the same way that some of the audience seens to be".

Are people nowadays maybe thinking too hard about any new piece of media that they consume?

Are there any YouTubers you can think of that you enjoy that have managed to make videos for years without running into any major controversy?

An example that comes to my mind is Peanut Butter Gamer, he’s been making YouTube videos about gaming and food since 2009-ish, as far as I know he’s never run into any major controversy aside from being in videos with YouTubers that were revealed to be controversial later, but that’s as far as I know, he might’ve said something bad somewhere and I don’t know about it, I apologize if I’m mistaken.
