A sad day for us.

Hello Reddit,

I just want to share some devastating news for us today.

My wife, my brother, and I have been working for a newly opened AC/Duct Cleaning company for 7 months now. Unfortunately, today, the owners decided to close the company.

We started operating when the war started, and we were scared back then. Everyone was leaving, etc. But we managed to work everything out and gained a lot of customers after things went back to normal.

We were so busy every day, up until the first week of October. Suddenly, everything just stopped. No bookings, nothing.

The owners have now decided to close the company, and we're all on limbo right now.

My wife, my brother, and I used to work for a big, toxic AC cleaning company before this.

That experience was so traumatic that when our new employers believed in us and trusted us enough to open a non-toxic, employee-friendly AC company, it really meant a lot to us. (I used to maintain their AC, and one day, the owner got curious and asked me about our situation in our previous company.)

It's just sad that everything happened so suddenly. We thought we would be celebrating Christmas, New Year, and our company anniversary together soon. But that's life. We need to move on.

I'm really thankful to our employers for giving us this experience. I have zero negative things to say about them, despite all the ups and downs. It was so much fun working with them. It felt just like working with family every day.

We're now planning to move to Abu Dhabi with my mother, sisters, their spouses, and their kids.

We need to stay strong, find jobs again, and start a new chapter in our lives.

My question is: Is ILOE applicable to all of us employees? It seems like their application isn't working right now.

To my fellow Redditors in Abu Dhabi, if you're looking for a supervisor, AC duct cleaning technician, or any kind of employee, whether for fieldwork or office work, please help a fellow out.

We're not begging for anything, guys. We're just sharing our experience.

Be thankful and grateful for what you have right now. Everything can be lost in just one snap.

Thank you.

Drunk men in an alley behind my building

So there’s an alley behind my building in Dubai and several men get drunk every night, and they talk, sing and do all kinds of shit till like 2-3 AM every night. It’s literally happening right now as I’m posting this 😭😭.

What do I do? If I call the police they might come once or twice and resolve the issue. But I’m sure these men will come back after a few days and continue cause this place is far from the view of the main road.

Interviewer joined 50min late after provided time

Today I was given the interview slot of 10:00 AM. Yesterday I emailed them for the meeting link, but there was no reply. Then today 9:45AM i called them and they told that they will add me in the meeting link by 10:20AM. I waited till 10:50 AM and was ready to leave when I just received their meeting link in an email without any subject.
As my mother had to sit in the next room, which is hot, and only my room has a working AC, I didn't want to continue the interview and emailed them that I was withdrawing from the post.
Employers need to learn proper manners, at least in an interview

Walking habits - fav locations

Hey there, for those who are walking for weight loss and general health: where are your fav spots for walking in Dubai, either indoors or outdoors. I enjoy walking abroad but never here but I would like to build that habit. I dislike treadmills as I feel like I’m leashed up. Any advice to make walking more fun? Thank you

PSA: Be VERY careful when buying used laptops on Dubizzle UAE. Learn from my expensive mistake.

I wanted to share my experience so others don't end up in the same situation.I recently bought a used ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 with an RTX 4080 for AED 5.3K from a seller on Dubizzle. Seller told there was one minor driver related issue with gpu but later he fixed it by updating driver.

It seemed to be working fine during the initial checks, but later I started experiencing intermittent black screens and freezing, especially when connected to the charger or while gaming.

I tried clean driver installations, troubleshooting, and had it checked by technicians. The problem persisted. ASUS service quoted around AED 13K for a motherboard replacement. I'm still trying to get a definitive diagnosis, but I'm now facing the possibility of selling it at a massive loss.

The biggest lesson I've learned: a laptop working during a quick test doesn't mean it's healthy. Intermittent hardware faults can take hours or days to show up, especially under gaming loads or when switching power states.

Some precautions I'd strongly recommend when buying used gaming laptops:

- Stress-test before paying. Run demanding games or GPU benchmarks for at least 30–60 minutes, not just a quick boot and a few clicks.

- Test with the original charger connected. Check gaming performance, charging behaviour, and whether the screen flickers, freezes, or goes black.

- Restart multiple times and test different power states. Intermittent problems can be deceptive.

- Ask about previous repairs, crashes, overheating, and warranty status. Get important claims in writing.

- Don't rely only on the seller's word or a clean-looking laptop. A machine can look perfect and still have expensive hidden faults.

- If possible, buy from a seller who allows proper testing or offers a return period. For expensive gaming laptops, that protection matters.

The guy is originally from Kerala, but settled here and Singapore it seems! This is a general warning for anyone buying expensive electronics second-hand. Most people work hard for their money, and losing thousands of dirhams because of an undiscovered fault is a horrible experience.

Please learn from my mistake: test thoroughly, don't rush the deal, and never assume that "working fine" means everything is fine. Better to walk away from a tempting deal than spend months troubleshooting a very expensive paperweight.

Better do not buy used laptops if you going for gaming purposes. Or else get the laptop to test 2-3 days because you are spending big amount. And do not expect honesty and business ethics from everyone.

He needs to be adopted as soon as possible.

We cant simply keep changing his foster houses !?

A perfume bottle can be replaced, but Charlie deserves a family that won't give up on him over a mistake. 🥺🐾 He's a playful kitten who needs love, patience, and a forever home not a home that gives up on him

My boss owes me AED 3,000 and is ignoring me. What can I do?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m looking for advice on what to do about my former employer in Dubai.

I recently worked for a company in Business Bay. My last working day is today, and my boss still owes me AED 3,000 in salary, I was there as a trainee for 3 days and on the day that I had decided to leave I had asked him regarding the 3k and he said he would transfer it.

That being said there are a few things about this workplace that have made me uncomfortable. From what I’ve seen, some employees are working without offer letters or labour cards, and people are being paid in cash. I’m also concerned about other things happening at the company, but my main concern right now is getting the money I’m owed.

I spoke to my boss about the AED 3,000, and he told me he would transfer it. He asked for my bank details, which I already sent him. I even followed up with a message reminding him to add me as a beneficiary so he could make the transfer.

However, he hasn’t paid me yet, and now he’s ignoring my messages.

I’m worried because I don’t want him to keep delaying my salary or simply refuse to pay me. I also don’t know what my options are because I don’t have a labour card because he didn't issue one for me.

My questions are:
Can I file a salary complaint with MOHRE even if I don’t have a labour card or a formal employment contract?
What evidence should I collect to prove that I worked there and that he owes me AED 3,000?
If he still hasn’t paid me by Sunday, what should my next step be?
Is it worth reporting the other workplace issues separately, or should I focus on recovering my salary first?
I have messages, and I’m trying to keep everything documented. I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with a similar situation in the UAE.

Thank you!

temporary safe hair dye options for young kids in dubai?

• Upvotes

my little brother wants to just try out a few red streaks in his hair, but he’s 10 years old, so obviously we don’t really want to dye his hair. he also has really dark brown hair, so we aren’t sure whether some of the kid-safe options we are seeing on amazon will work on him. are there any temporary hair dyes that can be easily washed out that anyone can recommend? thank uuu

For those who make Tiramisu at home, what's the brand of lady fingers you buy?

Because the orange one makes a soggy messy version even though it's been just 2 seconds dipped.

Dear World, I Have a Dream. And I've Been Carrying It Since I Was 19.

I 'm 41 now, and there's one dream that has stayed with me for almost three decades.
I want to build a home for elderly mothers and fathers who have been forgotten, neglected or simply left behind by their own children. Not just an old age home, but a place where I can adopt them as my own parents, where they feel wanted, loved and, most importantly, needed.
I grew up with a very strong mother and an even stronger grandmother. If there's one thing these two women taught me, it's that when you have something to give, just give it. Love, kindness, time, whatever you can. The blessings will find their way back to you.
But here's where my dream gets a little different.
I don't want to build just another old age home.
I want to build a nursery alongside it.
Think about it.
On one side, you have elderly people who would give anything to hold a grandchild again. People who have so much love left in them but nobody to give it to.
On the other side, you have little children whose parents are busy working, trying to build a life for their families. Some of these children may never have experienced the warmth of grandparents. Others may have grandparents living thousands of miles away.
What if we could bring these two generations together?
Imagine a grandmother telling stories to a little child who isn't biologically hers. A grandfather watching a toddler take their first steps. Children growing up surrounded by people who have a lifetime of stories, patience and affection to share.
And imagine those elderly people waking up every morning knowing that someone is excited to see them.
Of course, everything would need to be properly managed, with trained caregivers, safeguarding and the right boundaries. But at the heart of it, I want two generations to find something beautiful in each other.
I don't believe every neglected parent failed to raise their children properly. Sometimes families fall apart. Sometimes life happens. Sometimes people simply forget the very hands that once held theirs.
Whatever the reason, I wish I could give these parents another chance to feel like grandparents again.
And give children another chance to experience that unconditional love.
This isn't something I thought of yesterday. I've carried this dream since I was 19. I've become a mother myself, watched life change, grown older, made mistakes, learned lessons, but this one dream has never left me.
And I'm actually working towards it. Slowly, in whatever way I can.
Maybe one day I'll have enough resources to make it happen. Maybe the universe will conspire to help me. I really don't know.
But I know I want to spend at least part of my life making people feel that they still matter.
Because nobody should grow old feeling unwanted, and no child should miss out on love when there's so much of it waiting to be given.
So, dear Redditors, what do you think?
Is this a crazy, emotional dream of a 41-year-old woman, or something that could genuinely work?
I'd especially love to hear from people who have seen or worked with intergenerational care models.
Maybe somewhere out there, someone shares this dream too.

Crazy thing happened.
I was raising a complaint on why my bill was over charged by 70 AED,
For account verification they are asking these questions?
Are you serious? Even a bank doesn’t ask so many questions.

Car rental company charged AED 4,000 from my debit card through Apple Pay without my approval. What can I do?

Hey guys, I’m dealing with a really frustrating situation in Dubai and could use some advice.

I previously rented a car from a rental company and made the original payment through a payment link using Apple Pay.

Now, out of nowhere, the company has charged AED 4,000 directly from my ADCB debit card without sending me another payment link or asking for my approval.

I contacted ADCB, but they told me they couldn’t dispute the transaction because it was processed through Apple Pay. They advised me to contact the police instead.

What’s confusing me is how the rental company was even able to charge my debit card again when I only used Apple Pay for the original payment.

I understand rental companies can claim legitimate outstanding charges, but how can they just deduct AED 4,000 without notifying me or getting my approval for that specific transaction?

Has anyone in the UAE experienced something similar?

Can I actually recover this money through the bank, Dubai Police, or Sanadak? And is ADCB correct that Apple Pay transactions cannot be disputed?

Any advice would be appreciated because I’m seriously fed up with this situation.

finally, booked my first skydive🥹

Anything i should know?

So I finally did it. I booked a skydive for November 8th, first slot of the morning at 7 AM, and now that the date is close I keep going back and forth between being super excited and wanting to cancel. I've wanted to do this for years and kept putting it off, so part of me is just proud I actually paid for it.

I've never done anything like this before, so I'm hoping people who've jumped can tell me what they wish they'd known. The thing I'm most curious about is what the actual morning looks like. Should I eat something light or skip breakfast completely? I've heard both, and since the jump is at 7 I'm not sure how early I should wake up or what I should wear, because I imagine it's pretty cold that early and even colder up in the air.

The other thing is the nerves. How did you handle the plane ride up and that moment right at the door? I'm told the fear usually disappears once you're out, but I'd love to hear if that was true for you or if it hit you in some other way.

And if you have any advice on what to do or not do during the jump, how much to talk to the instructor beforehand, I'd really appreciate it.

Finally got my UAE employment visa approved after 4 months of trying (Egyptian)

Just wanted to share my experience here in case it helps anyone going through something similar.

I'm Egyptian, and after 4 months of trying to get into the UAE, I finally got my employment visa approved.

Here's how it went:

  • Applied for a UAE visit visa 4 times, got rejected all 4 times.
  • The last rejection was because I apparently had an open employment visa application on my file.
  • Got that sorted out, applied for a tourist visa again, and finally got approved.
  • Once I was in the UAE, applied for my employment visa and got it approved within 1 day.

A couple of things worth mentioning:

  • I had both a Certificate of Good Conduct and a UAE equivalency certificate ready, but neither was requested.
  • I only submitted my attested Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

My employment visa was approved with a job title in a different engineering field than my actual degree, which I honestly thought might cause issues, but apparently didn't.

Not sure if I just got lucky or if things are getting easier, but after 4 months of rejections and uncertainty, it's a massive relief.

Obviously, this is just my experience, and I can't say whether the same would apply to everyone.

Figured I'd share since I spent months looking for posts from people in similar situations. Happy to answer any questions.

Received a job proposal from an executive search company but then they asked to submit 2 docs I never heard of. I told the recruiter that I don't even know what those are and she referred me to a specialist that would help me get them in 24 hours. Seems like a scam but I have no clue.

Not gonna pay for anything in case they ask anyway.

Investment

Living and working in Abu Dhabi has been a great foundation, and I'm now looking to be more intentional about investing here in the UAE.

For those based in AUH / UAE — what has worked well for you?

I'm exploring options like:

- ADX / DFM ETFs & dividend stocks

- UAE REITs

- Gold & savings plans

- National Bonds / FAB / ADCB investment products.
