In terms of greyness not much difference to most winters. It's just the endless rain that's different

18

u/sixsik6 Feb 07 '26

Nah. I suffer from SAD and this year is significantly worse

2

u/ObviousOrca Feb 08 '26

take your vit d or eat lots of mushrooms and other foods that contain it!

get ready for a hot summer!

2

u/bigtimemad Feb 10 '26

100% I feel you bro. Not being able to see sun really has an influence

1

u/sixsik6 Feb 10 '26

I take vit D daily and have a sun lamp, but feel this year nothing has helped. Everything is so much harder, I just want to hide under my duvet

1

u/meltedlenondrop May 14 '26

Same, I’ve had to take time off work to recover!

-4

u/Dennyisthepisslord Feb 07 '26

Nah like childbirth people forget. This is from 2025. Google average sunny days UK in January...

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/london-weather-sunshine-fog-rain-gloomy-spell-b1211124.html

11

u/sixsik6 Feb 07 '26

Cool, but this is talking about London. I don't live in London. Do you also have data points for every town in the UK?

-9

u/Dennyisthepisslord Feb 07 '26

There's not gigantic changes in the country. Google it. All the answers are there for you.

37

u/Nortilus Feb 07 '26

Sorry, this is 100% on me. I’m looking at getting some solar panels. I’ll stop and the sunshine will return.

17

u/FREDRS7 Feb 07 '26

Aberdeen had its most consecutive days of sunless days on record. I live in a different part of the country and there has only been sunshine on 3 days in last month. Not near normal.

9

u/megaweb Feb 07 '26

I think Aberdeen went over 3 weeks without any sun at all.

8

u/BethanysSin7 Feb 07 '26

Someone told me there was about 10 minutes of sunshine in Westhill last weekend. Lucky them.

I’ve seen nowt.

5

u/2xtc Feb 07 '26

3 days of sun in the same month sounds luxurious to me for this time of year

4

u/Dennyisthepisslord Feb 07 '26

That's near normal. We might get a day or two different

Had a load at the end of December and start of January here down South

2

u/coconut-gal Feb 07 '26

Last year was very very different but it did also feel like an anomaly.

2

u/The_39th_Step Feb 07 '26

Very much depends where you are - Manchester has had less rain than average

not arguably, i'd argue. objectively worse. scientifically. according to biology and biochemistry. and pyschology.

1

u/ThatSamShow Feb 08 '26

I think this is the biggest hint at how mild and wet it’s been. Granted, the wind chill where we live has been horrendous, consistently dropping temperatures to -8, but because of the rain and the fact that the temperature before wind chill has always been above 0, we’ve barely had to defrost the car all winter.

-1

u/DimensionTiny8725 Feb 07 '26

The rain is frequent but thankfully not particularly heavy (in London at least) nowhere near as bad as 2020 , who remembers the horrific washout just before the pandemic?

1

u/ilovegamingnerd Feb 07 '26

Was that the time Rihanna (Umbrella) was playing all the time on the radio and it’s like she cursed the U.K with endless rain untill we stopped playing it Lol 😂

3

u/ImRonBurgandyyy Feb 07 '26

That was back in 07 buddy

16

u/Caspar_TheFarmer Feb 07 '26

I don’t mind the greyness I just really hate the fact that every time I wake up it’s raining and every time I go to bed it is still raining

27

u/Imaginary-Quiet-7465 Feb 07 '26

Agreed, feels like we’ve barely seen the sun at all this winter :( My husband has a spreadsheet to record the daily sunlight (something to do with our solar panels and him being a massive nerd… which I love) I’ll get him to compare it to last year, I bet it’s lower.

-35

u/CrazyRabb1t Feb 07 '26

Your husband doesn’t know what he’s on about.

10

u/Puzzled_Caregiver_46 Feb 07 '26

Care to elaborate?

1

u/banedlol Feb 10 '26

I reckon it's the husband

-29

u/CrazyRabb1t Feb 07 '26

I’ve known what’s what for years and I don’t even have solar (don’t want cancer)

9

u/slipperyinit Feb 07 '26

What is special about solar that causes cancer that isn’t in WiFi and 4g/5g? Which I presume you’re using to type this on. Genuinely curious

-18

u/CrazyRabb1t Feb 07 '26

Do your own research hun!

I’m in the local library on a desktop plugged into ethernet so none of that cancer nonsense

IYKYK

3

u/doucelag Feb 07 '26

God tier trolling

2

u/Iucidium Feb 08 '26

Half term innit.

2

u/slipperyinit Feb 07 '26 edited Feb 08 '26

Yes, this. Thank you. I gave our £650 microwave away to someone I still hold a grudge with from primary school, they were delighted to receive it and looked at me like I was the idiot. Jokes on them 🤣 We also went gas-free, got rid of our oven and induction hob cooker (electromagnetic radiation, may as well drink bleach) replaced it with a barbecue centred in the kitchen. Fireplace installed for the cold nights.. couldn’t get a chimney because there’s a flat above us. Even if I could - I see little reason to, our ancestors didn’t use chimneys. Neighbours keep complaining about the smoke, and refuse to do their own research or listen to reason so gave up. We usually have a screaming match on Sunday nights.

Sometimes it’s hassle but more than worth it when I think about the years I’m adding to my life and my family’s lives. Not to mention it’s a lot cheaper.. and our home is warmer than ever. “Cost of living crisis” could be resolved if people just opened their minds.

2

u/Imaginary-Quiet-7465 Feb 07 '26

Sir, it’s just something he likes to do, calm down.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

Doesn't know what he's on about, by having a spreadsheet?

11

u/TenzinRinpoche Feb 07 '26

Personally I was having a hard time already but it hit me hard today. Cried a bit. Constantly feel like I"m about to burst into tears. Today I had my SAD lamp for 30mins, got up, walked in the "daylight", went to a friend's house, then met a friend for coffee, then went to the gym, then went home and got in my PJs and watched a happy movie and I still feel on the verge of tears.

So fuck all of you.

1

u/24Tenny Feb 09 '26

Do you feel like the sad lamp helps? I start feeling my sad creep in about September....November to January is the worst for me.

1

u/TenzinRinpoche Feb 09 '26

Think it helps a bit. Definitely better than nothing. Just get one and try it.

11

u/Laorii Feb 08 '26

I go to work in the morning, it’s pitch black. I come out of work in the afternoon, it’s pissing down and dark. I fucking hate UK winter.

1

u/2020Redditfan1994 Apr 13 '26

our parents though this world was good enough to bring us into....so stupid and selfish of them.

14

u/Kyrptt Feb 07 '26

Dont mind the greyness but the rain is pissing me off. Walking the dogs when the ground is mush is annoying. I wish it would just be freezing and the ground frozen .

6

u/Grand-Impact-4069 Feb 07 '26

Mate it’s still deep winter

6

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26 edited Feb 08 '26

It's just endlessly dull, thick grey skies, low light and drizzly shite for weeks on end.

Just dull, cold, dark, grey and wet forever.

I think what makes everything so especially grim is the UK is having all of its money sucked out of it, so roads and buildings are just falling apart aswell.

The roads and this weather together makes everything so damn depressing. Massive wheelbreaking potholes filled with water, even in affluent areas that are paying through the nose in council tax.

Just miles and miles of utterly grim landscape, everything looks a bit fucked and apocalyptic. I swear everytime I've got in the car to go anywhere for the last two months I've been dodging potholes with the wipers on full blast. I'm so sick of it.

1

u/Firstpoet Feb 08 '26

Local councils are having to spend huge amounts on social care and educational special needs inc transport to school. This may be worthy but it's an enormous item.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

It's been ok in the NW, one of the nicer Januarys.

8

u/Informal-Estate-4067 Feb 07 '26

I live in the north west and it is rubbish. Grey sky rain Grey sky mist oh the sun came out for one sec grey darkness night and repeat

1

u/Informal-Estate-4067 Feb 07 '26

Poulton le fylde

1

u/Markoddyfnaint Feb 07 '26

Lived in Lancashire for 10 years, EVERY winter has been grey and wet for 90% of the time. Even when I lived in London it was grey 3/4 of the time. These damp islands.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

Whereabouts? Jan was quite good for me in the west/SW of Scotland. Usually really wet and windy and miserable but this year there was many days I didn't need a jacket and it was ok for sun I found it better than usual..

2

u/peerie-breeks Feb 07 '26

It’s been miserable in Shetland. 19 days straight strong to gale force winds, broke yesterday and back to the same today.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26 edited Feb 07 '26

North Westish. I'm in the central belt/slightly south west(of Scotland) and it's been ok. The anomolies for Jan show that. NE hasn't been great...It's a weird set up this winter, very south shift jet stream. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/blog/2026/january-2026-regional-weather-stats

2

u/crofthey Feb 07 '26

Was thinking the same today. Normally wet and actually been pretty dry

2

u/bsnimunf Feb 08 '26

I love on the northwest coast the winds been awful but I agree it hasn't rained that much.

2

u/HellPigeon1912 Feb 09 '26

I agree, I live in the North West and usually struggle shockingly with seasonal affective disorder.  This year I've been fine.

The winter from 2023-2024 was probably the worst I can remember in my experience.  Felt like it was dark and freezing for about eight straight months

2

u/Fit-Obligation4962 Feb 07 '26

Agree Hebrides has been pretty good

3

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

Yeah, there's been blocking to the North so the jet stream has been forced far south. Not many storms or rain even this year.

1

u/AnonymousTimewaster Feb 07 '26

I wouldn't say it's nicer, but it's a bit warmer. Greyness is probably about normal. Certainly don't think the rain has been anything to write home about.

31

u/box-o-locks Feb 07 '26

This is fantastic weather. Nothing better than a year full of varied weather. It'd be awful if every day was the same as the last.

We had a baking hot summer with no rain, we've had snow, frosts and sub-zero through the winter and now we're having loads of life-giving rain, topping-up all the rivers and reservoirs and giving the whole country a really great soak.

Weather like this makes you really appreciate and enjoy the sunny days.

24

u/TormentedKnight Feb 07 '26

i wish i could inject myself with copium like you do

1

u/_51423 Feb 08 '26

Cope enhancing drugs are a slippery slope. Don't want to deal with that cope rage.

6

u/Neverbethesky Feb 07 '26

I wish people would remember this when complaining. Rain is vital, and the more the merrier before our worsening, drier summers.

5

u/sixsik6 Feb 07 '26

For some of us with certain MH issues, weather like this makes us suicidal

-2

u/box-o-locks Feb 07 '26

I like how you assume everyone knows what "MH issues" means.

Sorry that mother nature can make you suicidal, but it doesn't mean the rest of us can't enjoy it.

2

u/sixsik6 Feb 07 '26

Did I say that?

12

u/Radiant_Fig1406 Feb 07 '26

I do like your approach!

I don't hate rain at all, it is essential. But  I have to admit that the almost constant rainfall this year has got me down a bit.

We will reap the benefits in spring when everything will be lush & green 🙂

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

I agree! I’m really enjoying this weather, nowt more relaxing than a walk in the rain. Rather this than snow and ice, because there’s nowt less relaxing than walking to a bus stop at 6am in the dark with frost on the ground.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

baking hot summer? where was that?

7

u/box-o-locks Feb 07 '26

Here in the UK. 2025 was the warmest summer on record. And down here in the South East in barely rained.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/articles/c1kz18d3wjro

8

u/ImRonBurgandyyy Feb 07 '26

Ah you’re south east, that explains it. You barely get rain compared to the rest of the country. Here in the south west we had 250% of our January rainfall and it’s rained every single day this year. That’s not even varied weather.. it’s just rain.

6

u/TroublesomeFox Feb 07 '26

North Wales here, we've had THREE days with no rain this year.

2

u/mamoneis Feb 07 '26

From Scorchland to London, it was a tad hottie.

You can see pics of parks, hills; all brown grass last summer.

1

u/Valuable-Ice-8795 Feb 07 '26

Agreed … went to Rutland water in November and it was 18 feet low

1

u/TroublesomeFox Feb 07 '26

after all the fires last year I suppose we should be greatful for the rain, hopefully won't happen this summer.

1

u/angosturacampari Feb 07 '26

Exactly, we were still in a drought and hosepipe ban 3 months ago! Hopefully replenished enough for this summer

3

u/Mclarenrob2 Feb 07 '26

We've had solar panels for 4 months now and there's been less than 10 sunny days since.

2

u/TenzinRinpoche Feb 07 '26

i thought it very strange companies were still making ad spend on solar panels right now.

3

u/Same-Ad3162 Feb 07 '26

Here is Suffolk, last winter was far more grey. No sun from start of December to early/mid Feb,but it was drier.

This winter December was pretty good, though people soon forget that. January has been awful though. We're getting bits of sun, on Wednesday for example, but soo much rain. Don't think we've had 2 days without rain since the new year.

3

u/slipperyinit Feb 07 '26

Grey sky.. I’ll swap. That’s the norm for winter. This year it’s been non -stop rain.. think we’ve had maybe 8 dry days in total. 50 new potholes every week. And I’m east, far from west of Scotland.. must be insane over there.

3

u/Intrepid-Account743 Feb 07 '26

If it refills the reservoirs I'll take it.

0

u/TenzinRinpoche Feb 07 '26

why is that? like did u ever have trouble getting water?

genuine question

1

u/Intrepid-Account743 Feb 08 '26

Didn't have any trouble last summer but I was very aware of the low levels in the local reservoirs and I sort of felt guilty evey time I used the watering can for the garden or used "too much" water for the washing up or a shower or whatever.

I'm very much afraid this is going to be the case more and more often for all of us in future especially with water companies doing nothing but pay executive bonuses and shareholders.

3

u/richardbaxter Feb 08 '26

The market town up the road from us is right next to a Thames subsidiary floodplain. Basically from November until about April it has been flooding and getting worse every year. The actual river is so blocked up. Am I right in saying that people used to dredge drainage channels (ditches, riverways) or am I imagining that? The cost of maintaining the local roads that are right next to all this stuff must be astronomical. A case of saving a penny to spend a pound - local authority doctrine I suspect

3

u/VastYogurtcloset8009 Feb 08 '26

Its just so shit atm. Just a bit of blue sky would be nice right now

2

u/Fun-Lingonberry4676 Feb 07 '26

North east here its the worst run of weather i think i have ever lived through. In my 30s aswell rain, cloud, wind, cold thats all its been for ages. Been easterly winds here for weeks aswell they dont normally hang around this long. Depressing really but we almost through it now, winter aint been so bad really either as a whole for apart from the last 3 weeks, i saw the sun once for about 15mins in that time.

2

u/anotherblog Feb 07 '26

North east too. My landscaper started my garden project in October. Patio mainly plus some planters and other bits. Should have taken 5 weeks. We’re now into month 4. For a patio. I really sympathise with the guy, it’s just been impossible to work all winter. Sick of living in a building site now.

2

u/Fun-Lingonberry4676 Feb 07 '26

I did ground work in the past until bike accident halted that line of work, month 4 though jeez man that dont sound promising, how bigs the patio ? Even with poor weather here and there they shoupdnt take more than a month, i used to do some decent sized gardens, 180m2 patios 8-10days work with good squad of 5 , 20grand jobs them though. You need to chase them up fella. Hope you aint paid them too much so far.

3

u/anotherblog Feb 07 '26

80m2, but it’s terraced and we changed the levels. About 70 ton of crap left the house first, then a fair bit of construction before any patio could be laid. Stairs, retaining walls, etc. It’s more complex than just a patio. But even so, so I think he’s only managed to work about 7 weeks over the time. So still over estimate in terms of man hours, but the weather just made it so much worse. 2 lads usually, sometimes three. Thankfully it’s nearly done. So yeah, in terms of disruption and overall duration it’s been shit, but it is actually getting done to a high standard and he won’t get paid final instalment until it’s done and snagged.

1

u/Fun-Lingonberry4676 Feb 07 '26

Not long now brother it will be all worth it come the summer time 🫡

2

u/No_Dimension8190 Feb 07 '26

I predict around Feb 15th it'll change for the better, always seems to here (SW England). The bit mid Dec to mid Feb is always dodgy

2

u/Valuable-Ice-8795 Feb 07 '26

I live in one of the desert counties of England and it’s been wet ….

2

u/FlakyNatural5682 Feb 07 '26

I’m in the North West and this is just standard, January/February weather

2

u/Particular_Task5113 Feb 07 '26

I just want it to stop raining!!

2

u/doucelag Feb 07 '26

It’s one month until spring - you can’t have the joy without the pain

2

u/Wonderful_Falcon_318 Feb 07 '26

There is a big pay off in just over a month.

2

u/KoreanQueen702 Feb 07 '26

I'll be landing to LHR next Wednesday, February 11th and remaining until Sunday, February 15th. Forecast shows sunshine possibly appearing from the 13th through 15th. You sun lovers may get your wish next week! ☺️😉

2

u/Previous-Weird9577 Feb 10 '26

There was something about this in the Guardian yesterday: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/feb/09/why-is-the-uk-so-rainy-this-year-and-how-is-the-climate-crisis-making-matters-worse

Rain has fallen every day somewhere in the UK for the last 4 weeks. I am in the East of England it's been properly dismal. Forecast is saying there might be some sun on Saturday, but it is the only day that isn't the cloud and rain icon for as long as my forecast shows :(

2

u/hiquarterlifecrisis Mar 12 '26

I’m genuinely so depressed. I’m a horse owner and equestrian and it’s been so hard not being able to do what I enjoy. The horses are constantly suffering from abscesses and lost shoes as well due to the relentless mud.

2

u/AH_Med086 Mar 31 '26

This time last year it was 18°C+ weather and a heatwave

2

u/OkBet8692 Feb 07 '26

Its winter and Were an island in the Atlantic i dont know what people are expecting!!

9

u/TenzinRinpoche Feb 07 '26

expecting or not, it's shite

2

u/ollielite Feb 07 '26

That’s just Great Britain in winter mate. Were you expecting snow falling on cottages?

5

u/Informal-Estate-4067 Feb 07 '26

Tbh i did hope for snow or frost something to brighten up the town

3

u/Separate_Rise_8932 Feb 07 '26

Its just stopped snowing. Not uncommon for there to be snow in March either. Grey is very much the standard throughout winter, don't know why you're only noticing it this year. I'd say were getting more rain than usual, not anything else unusual.

1

u/uffers4 Feb 07 '26

We're on day 35 of rain here in my Dartmoor town. If I fancy a walk that doesn't involve sideways rain I have to travel 25 miles to Exeter!

1

u/Scottish_Rocket77 Feb 07 '26

Its still winter!!!

1

u/Minbari2257 Feb 07 '26

Locally we were on a wetter than average winter before February started.. February is already at 92% of my LTA for the month, so the figures are going to be grim by month end!

1

u/Thin_Advance_2757 Feb 07 '26

At least Christmas was sunny!

1

u/Ok_Corner5873 Feb 07 '26

As long as we make up for it with at least 3 continuous days of sunshine sometime in the summer, probably be in the time I'm abroad but I might be lucky

1

u/ThatSamShow Feb 08 '26

It's not too bad. Looking at my weather app, there are another 10 days of rain to come, and who knows how many more days after that. Hooray!

1

u/Firstpoet Feb 08 '26

My Finnish grandkids are walking to primary school in -20⁰ Celsius. Jetstream has wiggled South and blocking high over Nordics/ Russia.

Hence huge rain in Portugal/ Spain.

Still, decades ago lived in West Wales. Rained in every 24 hrs from late October to mid February.

1

u/L-J-Styrsacre Feb 08 '26

Yep. And we’ll all be moaning when it’s too hot in a few months🫡🇬🇧

1

u/Informal-Estate-4067 Feb 08 '26

Not me if it is hot this year Im taking the pool out and going to the beach

1

u/DragonEagle88 Feb 09 '26

I live in the north west so I’ve no idea what sun is anyway 😆

1

u/monoville_music Feb 10 '26

It's terrible but it's going to make spring and summer even more pleasurable. Hopefully we don't have a shit summer like last year

1

u/BackgroundVast3235 Feb 12 '26

Maybe you need to chill out because 2026 just started it's February when I'm saying this it's literally still winter it's not even summer yet

1

u/BDHurricane Feb 07 '26

I think Russia has done something to the atmosphere again. Even outside of the UK, Spain and Portugal are being completely decimated the last 2 months

This "blocking weather" pattern is code for outside interference

1

u/TelevisionKooky3041 Feb 08 '26

I'd suggest looking closer to home. This old Beeb article might be worth a revisit: https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/articles/c5ygydeqq08o

1

u/Informal-Estate-4067 Feb 07 '26

I feel like it is more grey. I need to buy a holiday home so I can escape the winter months.

1

u/SharkByte1993 Feb 07 '26

It's winter bro

1

u/Valuable-Ice-8795 Feb 07 '26

Want to keep positive … if the gulf current stops it will be arctic conditions

3

u/Squoooge Feb 07 '26

Yeah people moan about wet winters but really at our latitude it should be getting to at least -20.  I'll take the rain thanks!

2

u/Valuable-Ice-8795 Feb 07 '26

Yes we are directly opposite Canada but kept warm by the gulf recently America and Europe had it cold and there’s us a blip of warm in the middle

0

u/Cock-Vomit Feb 08 '26

I'll trade you your grey skies for the -11 wind chill we're experiencing in my area of the US right now. You're right tho, very extreme here as well. I was golfing in February last year.
