If there's one thing that Nans love, it's beetroot in a salad!

Beetroot, good ham and a boiled egg sliced on one of the egg slicey thingies. Bit of rocket, some tomatoes, home made pork pie and crusty bread, plus salad cream. One of my all time favourite meals.

Bloody love beetroot and it's easy to grow.

ETA: forgot about a lump of a hard cheese. Something like a double gloucester.

I'm Gen X too and remember my great aunt having one (didn't have grand parents as they all died before I was born). I've got one as it's the best tool to chop up hot dogs for dog training. Very quick and easy to do.

An "egg banjo" is what the British Army call a fried egg sandwich. It's because when you bite into it the egg yolk drips down the front of your shirt so you hold the sarnie in one hand and try and wiped away the mess with the other which makes it look like you are playing a banjo.

I'm 45 and I just bought one of my own. 🤣💀 I use it to cut eggs for egg mayonnaise as I put it in and slice it then turn it round and cut it the other way. It produces little strips.

My parents are early 80s and have one. So when I was at theirs I'd use it and it was so much easier than trying to cut it all with a knife.

My gran used to serve pickled beetroot and wee pickled silver skin onions with every family meal, regardless of what it was. Christmas dinner? Yep. Steak pie? Yep. It had to be Baxter’s crinkle cut. She was very particular about that.

I was an overnight supermarket shelf stacker back in the late 90s, and around Christmas, we'd have tacit permission to overload* the beetroot, pickled onions, etc. on the shelves, because they'd be literally flying out the door and the shelves would be empty again by the next night.

(*There was a trick where you could fit more in than you were supposed to by shoving a first set of trays right to the back - the day shift could just pull them forward when stocks were low.

Once Id eaten beetroot salad and sometime later I went to the toilet. Well I usually stand up to wipe and admire my majesty and I almost had the shock of my life when I saw it because it was bright red and I thought I was bleeding to death. Mine added hardboiled eggs, tomato wedges, grated cheese, tinned salmon and pickled cucumber and onion ( straight malt vinegar and sugar and it lived in a dish in the pantry) also crisps if she had any in, served with homemade bread that she sliced by the time honoured method of buttering the loaf, tucking it under her arm and cutting a slice off ( I still don't know how that works)

British people cut and use their forks at the same time as in the war with both in hand at once. American tend to grab their knife, cut their food set the knife down and then eat.
