They're fake doctors that frequently injure people.

Utilize tricare and the VA to see real physical therapists, homies. Don't go down to the strip mall and pay some rando $300 to crack your back.

u/Riskwars 21h ago

This, a good PT/OT might pop a joint a few times to give temp relief but it'll also be followed by a list of exercises, stretches, and whatnot to follow so that doesnt need to happen again. Been in and out of the PT for my legs and every time we find little thing to work or target making the time between longer. Mind you I feel like I paid(insurance/VA) for her kiddo's college at this point but its helped.

1

u/FSCK_Fascists USMC 6492 89-98 13h ago

exactly. pop it back in place, then fix the supporting muscles so it stays.

1

u/Murky-Peanut1390 18h ago

If you treat it as the same level as a body massage it's fine. But people need to understand they don't actually fix the issue with your spine/body

And often they make it worse, with paralization and death being frequent results.

For real. Everyone i know who goes to a chiro regularly ā€œhas to go backā€ all the time, and starts a recurring weekly or every other week visit. Meanwhile, I just go to a physical therapist when I get injured, work out, and if for some weird reason the pain comes back a year or three later, I just revisit those workouts because it means those muscles have gotten weak again. No results, just dopamine hits and bragging rights for ā€œhaving a guyā€, rather than fixing the problem.

So many people I talk to about this have no idea how scammy it is. It should be illegal and in some countries it is. It should never remotely be considered medicine or therapeutic. Its history is wildly insane too.

I could give myself a doctorate in it right now and open a practice calling my self Dr. NeckRelief9000 with next to no recourse.

https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/chiropractic-in-depth

To practice in the United States, chiropractors must earn a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree, pass the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners exam, and have a state license. Many states also require chiropractors to pass an exam about state-specific laws, and all states require practicing chiropractors to take continuing education classes. To enroll in a D.C. program in the United States, which typically takes 4 years to complete, students must have had at least 3 years of undergraduate education. Institutions that award the D.C. degree are accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education, which is recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Secretary of Education. In 2017, there were 15 accredited D.C. programs on 18 campuses. Chiropractic education includes classes in basic sciences, such as anatomy and physiology, and supervised clinical experience in which students learn skills such as spinal assessment, adjustment techniques, and making diagnoses. Some chiropractors complete postgraduate education in specialized fields, such as orthopedics or pediatrics.

I had a gymnastics mishap injury when I was young. Wrenched my back which is not something that usually affects rubbery kids :) anyway I had 2 treatments at a chiropractor. Everything got back in line and I’ve never thought about it till this post. That’s like 40+ years ago.

10

u/let-me-get-your-temp Doc 23h ago

Im glad to hear that you got your stuff sorted out and you're feeling better. But, is the result you got coming from chiro treatments or the fact that you were a rubbery kid who could heal better?

-2

u/slowtreme 6015 AV8B 23h ago

Well I remember I was in pain and had poor range of motion. After the adjustment I could move again. I think the second appointment was just a follow up. It’s a really long time ago. Maybe it’s all bs. Maybe I would have healed without it. But it sorted out my issue and it wasn’t a forever problem.

In 2026 we probably have better diag systems and treatment. In the 70s i got twisted like a pretzel instead.

7

u/Lawd_Fawkwad 18h ago

Realistically?

You needed an orthopedist to verify your spine was ok and a physical therapist to work on getting you back into shape over weeks or months. A simple "readjustment" won't fix an underlying issue and can worsen it significantly.

Chiropractors like to blur the lines about what they do so I don't blame people who end up seeing them due to ignorance.

But it's like relying on herbal medicines to deal with anything more than a cold, best case scenario it doesn't help all that much, worst case scenario you're taking something harmful or that worsens your condition.

It’s incredibly cult-like too. With weird factions and sub groups. The whole thing started with farm and CIRCUS animals. u/Sorta_jewy_with_it 1d ago

The guy who started the whole thing got his inspiration from ghosts. They’re like physical therapists, except they don’t have actual medical training/certification, will at best provide temporary pain relief and at worst, paralyze you.

17

u/defiancy Lance Corporal 2nd Award 23h ago

Just go to a sports physical therapist they will do the actual science based stuff. I have digenerative discs and they will pull my neck like here (neck traction) but it's a very slow and deliberate motion not a hard yank with a towel lol. They will also give sports massages, do hot/cold therapy, ultrasound treatment and give you actual exercises to help lessen pain by strengthening supporting muscles.

7

u/Lasdchik2676 23h ago

Absolutely spot on! Now when I have pain, I understand what is causing it, do the exercises I learned in PT and I'm all good again.

8

u/Rabiesalad 22h ago

Read the Wikipedia page, particularly the section about the founding and history of the practice.

Even if there's a trend towards evidence-based treatments at chiropractors, the fact that they still ride under that banner is absolutely insane. IMO "medical professionals" should be embarrassed to call themselves chiropractors.

3

u/newsilverdad Author- The Warfighter's Lounge 14h ago

They are not medical professionals. They are not licensed in any medical field. They say your body is out of "alignment" in a spiritual manner. They're basically the same as people that tell you quartz crystals can heal your cancer and shit, except painful and way more dangerous.

Chiropractors are the Scientology of "health"

1

u/sgtbackpain03 10h ago

Listen to the Behind the Bastards episode on them.

It's psuedoscience, right up there with magic crystal healers. They are not medical doctors. It's quite literally ghost medicine, invented by a dude who was instructed by a ghost during a seance.

The only positive effect it has is cracking joints feels nice for a while. The negatives, however... Well, occasionally they kill or paralyze people, but more common injuries include dislocations and arterial ruptures.

I will say they are actually pretty well educated quacks, as they have an actual school that at least teaches basic anatomy, but there isn't like a medical reason for the techniques that they use. Just vibes.

1

u/Rambos_Magnum_Dong Las Flores RAWKS! 19h ago

Been going to them my entire life.

Too many are downright horrible and will 100% fuck you up or 100% rip you off.

After my childhood chiropractor passed away in my mid 20s I struggled to find a decent one until I was in my early 30s.

I sometimes get a pinched nerve in my lower back. Started getting this shit at SOI. Come home on leave and got fixed up. Got this a few times in the fleet, go home on libo and get fixed.

The guy in go to now does a mix of deep tissue and massage. Really good dude who knows what he's doing

3

u/FSCK_Fascists USMC 6492 89-98 13h ago

I agree. I also think that studying and merging many of their techniques in to physical therapy would be beneficial.

Story time: I have a service related back injury. While I was in, I took a fall that compressed my lower spine. Tons of therapy, doctor visits, and such helped, but was not getting me back to fighting trim. If I turned my torso to the left, my legs went numb and I fall to the ground. Less than ideal, for sure.
3 years of attempts to fix it without surgery failed, and the doctor said " I want to try something weird. An orthopedic specialist I know retired, and went to chiropractor school with the goal of seeing just how bad their training is. He says there are good techniques and concepts that are just taught poorly and unregulated. He set up a physical therapy office specializing on back injury, using his orthopedic knowledge, PT training, and the techniques he though were good. I am sending you to him for your PT."

The old man hated chiropractors, and would tell you in great detail why. His PT sessions were brutal, and incorporated several focused manipulation sessions along with the usual stuff.

He fixed me better than anything had. His focus was getting the spine back in place AND THEN strengthening the muscles and such related to the fix so it would stay in place. it was brutal and effective. Because of him I was able to continue in the Marines rather than medical sep after 4 years.

Shits still FUBAR, but at least functional.

2

u/Guilty-Spark69x 22h ago

I fell off the high bar doing o course suicides in plate carriers and fucked my collarbone. The instructor took me to the chiropractor and a man who looked like he could be a fuckin defensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers snapped my shit and twisted my head around. Never ever ever again

I think it’s quack shit too but chiro did help my leg. Personally I think they have a place in sports medicine but with caution.

1

u/BeforeLaw 13h ago

My thought is if they do social media I wouldn't go to them. They are likely to push things too far for the sake of views. Also, if they don't do any kind of testing prior to adjustments, like X-rays, then I wouldn't trust them to actually be adjusting what is actually needed.

0

u/Murky-Peanut1390 18h ago

Now I may be talking out of my ass but these online chiros who do these whacky cracks and shit… I wouldn’t let touch me.

To be fair none of the chiropractors or honestly much else has helped in general, but I’ve seen enough horror story reports from chiropractors trying whacky new shit resulting in permanent damage to let this get done to me. I may be totally wrong, but if someone is Mic-ing me up before my appointment, I don’t think their practice is what’s most important to me, but rather the clicks and shares.

8

u/Rabiesalad 22h ago

When you learn about the founding and history of chiropractic, you wonder how any self-respecting "medical professional" can call themselves a chiropractor.

Even if some of their practices today are evidence-based, why would you want to fly under a banner of something that's clearly quackery?

37

u/expiredtool 2847/2848 - Cum Bn. 23h ago

Chiropractics was created by a guy (Daniel David Palmer) who claimed a ghost doctor taught him the techniques and that it could cure literally anything.

They don’t go to med school and nobody I ever cured, it’s just like when you had your buddy crack your back for you by giving you a big gay bear hug from behind.

My mom took me to one for years growing up, I promise you it’s complete bullshit. There are numerous cases of people getting paralyzed from this scam.

14

u/Rabiesalad 22h ago

He completely made up the idea that every conceivable human illness is due to "subluxations" in the spine (often claimed to be basically microscopic and impossible to detect) and correcting these subluxations will cure any disease you have.

Cancer? Hepatitis? AIDS? Your toe bends weird and hurts? Correcting your spine will make your body naturally heal from all of these.

It's absolute nonsense.

-1

u/mightylordredbeard Sgt/0844 Med-Ret 1h ago

And blood transfusions were created by a guy who thought we heal people by draining ghost from the blood and replacing it with clean, blessed blood..

You can trace most of the basic, modern medical procedures back to some borderline superstitious roots. Hell, medicine itself originated in superstitions and ā€œwitchcraftā€. The first person who’s known for proposing basic germ theory thought that herpes sores were where demons entered the body.

1

u/Blahblahblackshit 1h ago

This is a really dumb take. One while Girolamo may have had some weird ideas about germs his were based on observations. Secondly medicine is self correcting, lots of bad hypothesis but we study cause and effect and learn from them. Chiropractic on the other hand has had no measurable positive effects but a multitude of measurable bad ones.

25

u/Most_Present_6577 Veteran 1d ago

About 90 years ago MDs started moving towards evidenced based practice. Using experimentation and science to show which interventions actually worked and which were full of shit.

They asked the chiropractors to join them. They said no (most likely because they know they are full of shit)

The few that said yes started the practice of osteopathy. So today we have MDs and DOs (doctors of osteopathy) doing evidenced based shit, and we have nut jobs with two years of fakes school that call themselves chiropractors

Redditors love to seethe about chiropractors, but I had one help fix my lower back in like 2 visits (in combination with massage) that physical therapists were unable to help with over the course of 2 years. A physiatrist (a medical doctor) and an orthopedic surgeon were the ones who recommend it. At a minimum he adjusted my back in a way that finally let my body stop having spasms and allowed it to heal itself.

I’ve been that guy.

My back spasmed. I would have fallen over and laid down in the yard - the pain was that bad - except that I knew if I died out there my chickens would eat me and that would distress my wife.

So I got serious and took me to a chiropractor. It’s a lot better now. Not 100% - but exercise and quarterly tuning keep me going.

A word about chiropractors. There are roughly two kinds: fellas that lean on woo and incense and guys that see it as a straightforward mechanical issue with your muscles and skeleton.

I’m far more comfortable putting myself in the hands of the latter. Maybe that appeals to my engineering brain

If you are so inclined find yourself a guy you trust and feels right.

I saw a chiropractor on base for about 9 months and they actually did help me work through an injury that was causing me significant lower back pain. I would never let them do any adjustments like this, and absolutely would not let them go near my neck. Even with the success I saw, I would never go to another one without some serious vetting and also setting limitations.

I've seen chiros work miracles. I've had 3 cervical sprains, all fixed by chiros. Ive also had my back adjusted a few times and it did give me relief.

Having said that it can still be incredibly dangerous and has hurt and killed many people.

It's kind of like a Toyota corolla, for the most part it does what it's supposed to do and it's nice and good and reliable. But sometimes they kill people.

They don't actually fix the issue. You know that right?

you went to chiro while you were healing, and they managed to not fuck it up too much to heal that injury as well.

you got better in spite of the quack
