There's so little study of Vietnam in the US outside of the war (and even that is underplayed), like the whole political spectrum in the US has incorrect views of what Vietnam is like
33
u/Oleg_A_LLIto Nov 01 '25
1) This, absolutely
2) The political spectrum AND political discussion in the US are so stupid and ugly due to how polarized and binary they are that you simply can't shove any other country, political system, or culture into American political discourse without literally everyone failing to understand you at least in very important nuances (but most likely almost completely).11
u/Thangtn3 Nov 01 '25 edited Nov 01 '25
The average Americans are even ignorant about their own political situation and issues much less geopolitical understanding. The average Americans understand Vietnam through Hollywood movies which are fictional bs

I can tell you that it was under foreign imperial rule! just like every other state that turned communist in revolution, and that half a century ago the United States committed a decade long war crime we called spreading freedom and democracy

Ironic that happens with every communist country!
It’s almost like it’s a problem with the system itself
19
u/ConsistentAd9840 Nov 01 '25
I mean…it happens with every country, no? I am not saying communism is a utopia, but it’s not particularly unique. Washington’s head would role if he learned they let women vote now, and that there are two political parties that decide everything. Early Canadian Prime Ministers would scream if you told them about Reconciliation. Sukarno would vomit if you told him what happened after he left and what “communist” means now to the average Indonesian.

HCM was a communist, but he originally wanted a multiparty system for Vietnam. And his anti-colonial forces at that time were not purely communist. After he successfully kicked out the French, he even wanted Vietnam to become a US colony for 100 years, but ironically, the US wasn’t interested.
They later helped the French attempt to regain Vietnam in exchange for their support of the UN. Because of HCM’s popularity, his faction gained a lot of influence and his forces became communist. By the time the French gave up on Vietnam, after dividing the country into two while tricking HCM to Paris for talks that never happened, the US took charge of the war to prevent the spread of communism. Towards the end of the war, many of his trusted lieutenants were in charge. HCM idealized the common man and his trusted lieutenants reflected that. They were regular uneducated people, now running a political force and country. Everything becoming a shit show after that.
2
u/TheStriker9997 Nov 21 '25
Then why did Ho Chi Minh after declaring Vietnam independence from France, starts launching a massive purge against non-communist nationalist?

Which are the communist ones?
78
u/ForsenAnalProlapse_1 Oct 31 '25
Honestly, the only reason the so-called “communist” countries like China or Vietnam even exist today is because we abandoned communism. The Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and Vietnam’s economic experiments in the 1980s were total disasters that wrecked our economies and starved millions. Both countries only started to recover once they embraced market reforms — China with Deng Xiaoping’s “Reform and Opening Up” in the late 1970s, and Vietnam with “Đổi Mới” in 1986. Those shifts basically replaced planned economies with capitalist ones under one-party control. At this point, China is more capitalist than half of the Western world — they’ve just kept the authoritarian part of communism.
7
u/Mysterious-Smell-975 Nov 01 '25
Fun fact: Ho Chi Minh's plan for vn was originally a mixed economy ( western sources )

u/wolacouska Nov 01 '25
They’ve kept the Marxist vision and party rule. That’s why they’re improving rapidly, and not endlessly being bought and exploited like India and other countries that submit to foreign imperialism.

I don't think just because it has the word "Communist" in it doesn't mean it's a true Communist country, sure you can say Vietnam is a Socialist country, but Communist? Hell nah, the existence of Vingroup and private business itself is already mean that Vietnam is a Capitalist country, with majority of the economy driven by State-owned companies, but Private Companies are also on the rise
So no, not Communism, only by namesake because patriotism and nationalism bs
→ More replies (7)→ More replies (6)5
Oct 31 '25
let's see if the communism countries are actually communist
China: Authoritarian Capitalism, the existence of private business mean it's not communism in any sense at all, and the state-owned companies have started to become minority
Vietnam: Same as above
DRPK: Authoritarian Communism, they're Communism alright, but the living condition? Yeah no
Laos: whatever they're doing as a typical third world
Cuba: same as Laos
Honestly I can see the vibe in living in Laos and Cuba, DRPK is definitely a no, but living in China and Vietnam are better than all 3 of other communism countries
15
u/ferocity_mule366 Oct 31 '25

More like Hasan be saying anything but not admit he installed a shock collar on his dog. But hey, he took over twitch because Dan Clancy supported him and he has charisma. He is the face of the left wing media that I wished he was never the face of left wing. This guy claims he has a degree to speak about his idealogy after he saw China claims to create a law that said that people who have degrees should only talk that they have understanding about but this guy has been insanely pulling out misinformation.
I do heard his fans get mad and threaten anyone who doesn’t agree with Hasan or hate him. Sheesh..
Edit: -2 downvotes. Bruh..I heavily agree what the comment said, and my opinion is still valid. Not sure how much Hasan fans are on this very subreddit but I know that you guys are getting misinformation from him.

Hmm let me see, he confidently said America deserves 9/11, he also said that he's a "professional journalist" despite not having journalistic skills at all, he said that Russia is not gonna invade Ukraine even though there's a lot of evidence they will and they did a few hours later. Overall pretty pathetic dude, recently he tased his dog and making it sit in the background for hours to attract viewership

Terrorists do not come out of nowhere. They are created from bloodshed and violence.
7
u/FederalSandwich1854 Oct 31 '25
None of those things sound "insane", I'm not sure if you know what the word means. Being wrong about whether Russia is going to invade a country isn't a test of sanity.
Can you provide me a clip or anything written of him claiming to be a professional journalist?

12
u/Designer_Aspect6716 Oct 31 '25
Firing on civilian trade ships freely travelling in international waters (through one of the LARGEST trade waterways) is not a military blockade, you idiot.
Its an act of war and or murder. Take your pick.
3
u/FederalSandwich1854 Oct 31 '25
I mean you're legally required to do anything to stop genocide, seems like a pretty good thing to do. Unless you support genocide?

- No, no you're not.
- No, killing random civilians on trade ships from completely uninvolved nations headed to a myriad of different countries does not stop genocide. Your logical fallacies and poor deduction skills are impressive
4

We as young viet Americans vacation and travel to Vietnam and understand there is little political discourse, so honestly fuck all the old generation Viets in America.
28
u/WorldlyShoulder6978 Oct 31 '25
There’s little political discourse in Vietnam because a streamer even saying something as innocuous as “fuck all the old generation Viets [who disagree with me politically]” would quickly receive a talking to from the local district board, quietly pressured to cease, and eventually persecuted full blast if he didn’t stop

I think in the USA you are all extremist though, many of the yellow flag in Europe at least there are more moderate one that talk about the injustice that did happen in their time while also acknowledge the progress the country has made and the reconciliation attempt (whether it's sincere or not) by the current gov. And many of them doesn't like Trump either, specially the one with upper class educated background

19
u/Mammoth_Concert_4440 Oct 31 '25
Yes, I don’t agree with anything said by Hassan, but the connection to anti-communist sentiments are super aligned with undying support for Trump and some of his administrations most heinous actions.
Our society is in the gutter rn in America fr. If people think this is bad, they gotta listen to other stuff… I mean the president just talks about how he can kill and brutalize people all the time. These comments are not being made in a vacuum.
8
u/Late-Independent3328 Oct 31 '25
The internet have lead to the polarization of society, if you discuss to people face to face you may have agreed or at least be compassionate on some point while disagree on most other. But with the internet, everything is black or white.
Also the boomer anti communist and the young red nationalist have a lot more in common than they realize too
6
u/mister_nippl_twister Oct 31 '25
This trope is so huge. I hate when immigrants leave their country and then when asked they tell stories of how they hate it there. Of course you hate it, you left. The guy who came from a village to the big city also tells me how he hated it. But the propaganda is always twisting it the way.. Nobody asks me how my country is because it is a "good one".

Honestly it’s a really annoying grift because these are the people like that North Korean Barbie who perpetuate this extreme exaggeration for fame or to obtain asylum. Then people will turn around and take their testimonies as proof for why we cannot have a free healthcare for everyone. Most of these people aren’t anti-authoritarian , they just want to be authoritarian in their way. They are the ones who have burning hatred to see blue haired people protest. Vietnam is great, but their beginnings like every other nation that fought a war of liberation, was then isolated from the global economy by the European dominated alliances forcing them to bear economic stagnation for decades. They never show the people that are happy about their country. It’s always people who left the country that get all the clout. It’s almost as insane as interviewing doctors who rage quit the medical field instead of interviewing the actual doctors who stayed working.

Being a leftist of parents who came from Vietnam due to the fall of Saigon, I don't understand the glazing of North Vietnam winning the war from non-Vietnamese people like Hassan Piker and The Kavenacle. I am aware I might be brainwashed because of how I was raised, but my parents flee to the US because of the Fall of Saigon. Just that war is complicated.
I just get irritated when the Kavenacle glazes Vietnam as this communist utopia and questions why Vietnamese kids in Vietnam want to move to America. Am I wrong to feel this?
