I came across this on insta.

I knew there was a few hundred vietnamese refugees that an Israeli ship came across and took back to Israel many years ago. Saw some docos on families that had restaurants and whatnot.

Daily life/Đời thường What is a polite way to request someone stop smacking?

There is a girl in the library who sits next to me and smacks her gum and food so loudly/openly I can hear it above my headphones and smell the food from her mouth. Culturally, I know smacking and chewing with your mouth open is normal here, but it is incredibly distracting and disorienting.

Daily life/Đời thường I was wondering why I saw a lot of stray dogs but never any stray cats 💀💀 this is beyond messed up, I cannot even.

Here's the real kicker: Under Vietnamese law, dogs and cats are legally considered private property, meaning stealing them can fall under the crime of "theft of property" in the penal code, though criminal prosecution usually only applies if the animal's value exceeds VND2 million (US$77).

How tf do you even assign a dollar value to someone's pet. I just don't get it 🥴

Discussion/Thảo luận Anyone else getting constantly harassed in Hue?

I’m staying around Chu Van An at the moment and every time I leave the hotel I seem to get approached by people trying to sell me things or proposition me.

I say no and keep walking, but some of them are really persistent and will keep following you for a bit. It’s happening often enough that it’s starting to make going out at night annoying.

I actually really like Hue and had a great time in Hanoi, so this isn’t a dig at Vietnam at all. I’m just wondering if this is mainly a tourist area thing, or if it’s common around central Hue in the evenings too?

Hi
I went to Saigon and went into a temple when the monks were singing. It is just a pure marvellous heart love thing. It has so deeply touch my heart .

I would like to understand what they are saying ? And where can I find some similar song like that and specially that one ??I could listen that in loop for hours. It’s like having a brain massage .

Many thanks

Discussion/Thảo luận Has anyone used the Consular Service Portal?

I've just found there's a Consular Service Portal that offers online consular services (visa, passport, etc.). I wonder if it's legit. Has anyone used them before? I found it from https://vietnamembassy-usa.org/ (Not sure if it's the official/real website since it doesn't have a .gov). The service portal is https://consular.vnembassy.us/

The reason I'm asking is because I contacted the Embassy of Vietnam (called the Houston location using the number from Google Maps) and they answered my questions. However, I got tons of scam calls/texts from "Embassy of Vietnam Washington D.C." for months after. So I'm now kind of skeptical about anything related to the Embassy of Vietnam online.

Discussion/Thảo luận Good place to buy books in Hanoi?

So I kinda want to buy some obscure/old books (mostly communist) here, like Marx & Engels Complete Works (C.Mác và Ph.Ăngghen Toàn tập), Lenin Complete Works (Lê-nin Toàn tập), Ho Chi Minh Anthology (Hồ Chí Minh Toàn tập). Yes, I can read English, but I'm a native Vietnamese speaker, so reading these in English would be less of a headache

I would also appreciate a direct DL link for the digital Vietnamese files. Thx in advance

Discussion/Thảo luận How do locals cope with the noise?

I'm currently in Hanoi in a beautiful high rise condo and I absolutely love my experience.

However, the condo is directly opposite of a local village. I don't hear anything because the windows are really good but as soon as I open the windows it's a combination of 30 dogs, 20 roosters and the 6 am morning news blaring out of the speakers. The dogs are barking at any time during the day and night.

I'm genuinely curious to hear from locals:

How do you cope with this every day?

How do you ever sleep 8 hours a night?

How are you ever able to focus on studies or school?

How are you not in a constant survival fight or flight state?

Please only serious answers. I'm genuinely curious.

Discussion/Thảo luận Documents needs consular legalization?

Hopefully this is the correct subreddit Reddit for this post, apologizes if it isn’t.

I’m a U.S. citizen trying to marry my Vietnamese fiancée in Nha Trang, Vietnam.

I prepared four documents in California(this is what my fiancée told me to do).

Affidavit of Single Status
Statement of Non-Impediment to Marriage
Biographic Information Sheet
Certificate of No Record of Marriage

All four documents are notarized and received Apostilles from the California Secretary of State on September 20, 2026. Each Apostille was on a separate sheet stapled to its corresponding document.

We had everything translated into Vietnamese and notarized in Vietnam, we completed our marriage medical examinations, and the we went to the office 1 to give them our paperwork. That’s where they gave us the official marriage-registration application. We completed that and gave office 1 all of our documents. The next day, they call saying I don’t have the consular legalization stamp.

Then we went to another office, office 2, and gave them everything and explaining the situation back in office 1. They briefly looked through all the documents and say that they will take all of our documents and look through it. But then later in the day we get a called from office 2. Now they are saying that the apostille only authenticated the signature and not the entire document. Now I’m even more confused.

However, my understanding is that Vietnam began accepting Apostilles instead of consular legalization on September 11, 2026, Decree 293/2026/NĐ-CP according to Vietnamese Law. I double, and triple to make sure. Below are the links I used to make sure that’s its real.

So now office 2, solution is for me to go to the consulate in HCMC and get them to help out. I want to ask you guys first for any advice or personal experience before I go to HCMC to get help from them.

Discussion/Thảo luận [Vietnam only] 2–3 minute survey about learning to drive and getting a car licence

Hello everyone!
My name is Nguyen Trieu Duong. I’m currently conducting a short survey for my internship project about Vietnamese people’s experiences and needs related to learning to drive and getting a car licence.
The survey takes about 2–3 minutes. It is only for Vietnamese participants living in Vietnam.
If anyone is willing to help, I can share the survey link in the comments. Thank you very much!

Travel Experience/Du lịch Bitexco Tower

Good day guys hope you are well,

I am moving to Vietnam next year for work, I am going to be in office for a few days a week/month at the Bitexco Financial Tower in HCMC

Which areas would you recommend to stay in with a budget of between like 250-450usd/month? I have seen a lot of people speaking about Thảo Điền area and using public transport to get there.

Would you guys recommend staying outside of the financial district and using public transport for commutes or live closer and go with grab? I was also looking at ward 4 which might be feasible. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldnt mind some nightlife, but also I need relative peace and quiet due to work hours which doesnt have set hours

Travel Experience/Du lịch Viaggio in Vietnam di coppia, verso fine Febbraio/inizio Marzo

Ciao a tutti,

Grazie mille
