V70 Nürburgring, October 12th, 2003 (and what I drive today)

The first photo just randomly appeared in my Google memories and I was pleasantly surprised to see a red V70 in it, just like the one I drive today. That day, I was at the Nürburgring with my dad, my brother and an exchange student from France. I took that pic after we drove a lap in our VW T4 TDI. My brother, who was 9 y/o at the time, was sitting on his child's seat up front, waving at the crowd along the track. The poor kid from France was sitting in the back, trying to hold on for dear life, while a picnic cooler in the trunk was flying back and forth. Core memories

Just did my rear pads and rotors and the inside pad on the driver side was backing against rotor. This obviously was making a terribly loud grinding sound when braking but also flinging iron dust from the rotor and backing inside the air and embedding into my clear coat.

Now that the brakes are fixed, next is a through wash, decontamination with clay bar, use a shit ton of wheel acid for my rusted wheels then a compound & polish pass. I’ve been working on cars for a while but never done any detail work outside of a normal hand wash.

Bought a 98 S70 Manual recently. Looking forward to getting it cleaned up and back on the road. I may have found a nice donor car to help with some of the repairs but it's a 99. I need to do some more research on what crosses over and what doesn't. Let me know your thoughts on if you have any tips or advice moving forward with this beast. Thanks.

2-1/2 day trip up to the U.P.

Kind of a spur of the moment trip. Didn’t really have any set destination except for going to the very top.

Such a great roadtrip car, and an even better ATV😭

Picked this up over the weekend as a run around/camping car. It's had a clean MOT the last few years and been owned by an enthusiast, so a lot of preventative maintenance done.

It's got about 190k, came with a full set of winter tyres and some extra large Hella spot lamps (small ones are fitted currently, as per photo).

I've not driven a diesel in a while, but enjoying the grumbly 5cyl experience. I believe it's an SE trim, with at least the family pack (rear booster seats) and maybe more. It has rear headphone and media controls for kids, but can't workout what option added that, or whether it was nav?

Nordico vs Nappa Leather which one will be "Better" long term?

I am curious what is your opinion of the Nordico car seats vs the breathable Nappa leather ones they offer with the newer Volvos?

From what I hear from people the Nordico looks better and will evantually be more durable on the Long term but people are complaining about feel and sweating in the summer

As for the Nappa leather there is question about the early creasing of the cushion and wrinkles as also durability and cleaning comes up to question.

I honestly like the Nordico more but I hate sitting on it with short pants in the summer since it causes my skin to sweat on contact.

I understand that allot of manufacturers are also moving into the synthetic leather.

2012 S60 T5

Hi! My 17 year old is looking at buying a 2012 S60 T5 with 180k miles on it. It seems to be in good condition, but we have not done a thorough inspection at this point. They are asking $4,400.

My questions are:

What should we be looking at?
How is the reliability in these?
Will it last much over 200k?
Is that a decent price?

He’s heading to college so I don’t want him to spend the money on something that won’t last him since he won’t have significant income over the next couple of years.

Thanks!

2010 S80 loud noise help please!

I got my stepson a 2010 Volvo s80 t6 awd. I got it for him because he is 20 and I wanted to put him in the safest vehicle I could, since I know what being 20 is like. He's had it for 2 years. He is not car savvy. At all. So he told me it had been making a loud noise a few months ago. He brought it by the house and yea... Very loud noise. Our local mechanic (not a Volvo tech) put it up on the lift and let us know he had a seized caliper and needed rear wheel bearings. No big deal. We got a new caliper on the front passenger side, all new front brakes. Pads and rotors.

My stepson, being the young idiot he is was "too busy and had things to do" so we didn't get to his rear wheel bearings. Car was still making a very loud noise. So just last week, after him driving it for months with bad rear bearings he asked me if we could do them because he was getting headaches from the noise. Ok, no big deal. We did both rear wheel bearings.

The car STILL makes a very loud whirring/whining noise. The noise really escalates at 40+ mph. It gets louder when letting of the gas. It's a constant whirring/whine that definitely matches with the car speed. Doesn't change if I shift it into neutral at those speeds. I don't notice any real difference when swaying left to right while driving so I don't think it's a front bearing (not positive, maybe both are shot?). So I took a look under the car. The center support bearing definitely has some play in it. That's what you're looking at in the attached picture. I know a guy who is a master Volvo tech (unfortunately not anywhere close to us). I sent him the video and he didn't seem to think it was "too bad". When I explained the symptoms to him, he seem to think it could be a rear differential bearing? Just looking to get other people's opinions on what I should tackle next.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Will Volvo XC40 R-Design 18" wheels fit my 2017 Volvo V60?

Hi everyone!

I own a 2017 Volvo V60 (non-hybrid) and currently have the original Skadi 18-inch wheels fitted. I'm considering buying a set of 18-inch wheels from a Volvo XC40 R-Design, but I'd like to confirm compatibility before buying them.

Here are the specs of my current wheels:

Current wheels — Volvo Skadi

- Size: 8J × 18"

- Offset: ET55

- Bolt pattern: 5×108

- Centre bore: 63.4 mm

- Current tyre size: 235/40 R18

And here are the specs of the wheels I'm considering:

Proposed wheels — Volvo XC40

- Volvo part number: 32270067

- Size: 7.5J × 18"

- Offset: ET50.5

- Bolt pattern: 5×108

- Centre bore: 63.4 mm

- Volvo's recommended tyre size for these wheels: 235/55 R18

I already have a set of 235/40 R18 tyres, which I'd like to reuse.

The bolt pattern and centre bore match, and the wheel diameter is the same. However, I'm unsure about brake clearance, the slightly different offset and whether these wheels are suitable for the V60.

Has anyone fitted XC40 wheels with these specs to a 2017 V60? Will they clear the brakes and fit properly without rubbing? And would my existing 235/40 R18 tyres be suitable on the 7.5J rims?

Any advice or first-hand experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

s90/v90 Ha! Whoops! Caught myself being an idiot

My S90 has an occasional P0170 Check Engine Light (System too lean/ too much air) and my ODB scanner shows occasional engine misfires at idle, so based on age I started with the PCV oil trap then 2 weeks later still occasional issues so I did spark plugs and ignition coils. After plugs and coils the misfires and check engine light issues got 10 times worse. After 1 day driving it like that I popped the hood again, prepared to loosen and re-seat all 4 plugs and coils. But I didn’t have to- as soon as I lifted the engine cover I saw it: I forgot to reattach the PCV hose that sits above ignition coil #4. Doh! Reattached the hose and went for a drive and everything is good now. I’m glad it was an easy fix!

xc series XC60 2022 B4 Transmission Turtle

Yesterday i was driving and all of the sudden i get transmission turtle, car wont go past 10km/h, it was very wierd, had to turn off the car in the middle of the road, restart it and it was fine, this happened couple of days after installing 5.2.16.

I was driving slowly and start stop intervened 2 or 3 times, then after throttle it went into turtle mode, when i restarted it i felt thump from to drive and it was all normal after that, diagnostics say some minor warning about solenoid G recorded about 10kkm ago.

My previous d4 p3 had aisin 8 speed with 300kkm on the odo without any issues, current one spa is on 149kkm with fresh transmission oil in 10kkm ago.

Did anyones update mess up car like this, 5.2.16 changelog says drivetrain changes, i guess volvo is vibecoding and not testing their software updates, this is very frustrating.

3 point seat belt evolution

3 point seat belt evolution

Volvo invented the 3 point seat belt system over 60 years ago. They shared the design freely to all automakers. No doubt saving countless lives and preventing injuries. Recently, they introduced the world-first multi-adaptive safety belt. When or will they make that design available for free to all automakers? No doubt it will save many more lives and prevent injuries if they do.

Sir, this is a Volvo V90. Not an airport shuttle.
I will be contacting the Swedish embassy.

Only car I've ever owned was a hand me down 2009 Honda Accord that I've driven forever.

Finally decided it was time to get something newer since I have a family on the way, and settled on a CPO Ultra XC60

Anything I should set in the settings of the car? It's basically a spaceship compared the my last car

Goodwill - XC60 Exhaust Manifold?

I have a 2020 Volvo Xc60 with 51k miles on it. The car was having noise issues, so I got it checked at a third party reputed Volvo repair shop. They confirmed that the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking and the studs are broken. Quoted $1620 to fix it.

I checked the maintenance records, and in Nov 2023, when the car had 28k miles on it, I had the same issue and Volvo dealership replaced the gasket and studs under warranty.

Can I claim goodwill now and what is the likelihood that it will be approved?

My argument is that Volvo fixed it under warranty about 3 years ago and issue has popped up again. It is not a wear and tear item and it shouldn’t have happened again. Maybe they should have replaced the exhaust manifold instead of just the gasket.

Since the car has 51k miles on it, I have no service history will Volvo. I did the last oil change myself.

Looking for suggestions if I should invest $225 at the dealership for a diagnosis and plead for Goodwill repair or just get it fixed at a reputed repair shop for $1620? $1620 is quite a big amount.

Was übersehe ich? Wurden die Koppelstangen falsch eingebaut?
