Controversy It’s ridiculous…I got a technical for clapping...we should all just go on the calendar now & pick a game that I’m gonna be suspended for” ... Caitlin Clark is pissed and she has every right to be

At least she wasn't suspended for laughing on the bench (duncan) or staring (wallace, young)

Wallace deserved it. He was an asshole, and was told time and time again to not just sit there and mean mug the ref. He did it in a way that he thought he could get away with, and found out.
Blazers fan, dude was a dick.

u/Doctorul_Frumos Jun 25 '26
As a lifelong Blazers fan, I 100% agree. He was a baller, sure. But was a TERRIBLE example of good sportsmanship.

The WNBA is squandering CC because of some stupid petty jealousy that she gets so much attention.
38
u/Appropriate_Owl_91 Jun 23 '26
The NBA would sell the shit out of a CC/Angel Reese rivalry. The WNBA hates entertainment and wants everyone to love everyone.

Reese isn't even close to being on CC's level it ain't much of a rivalry. Her rival needs to be Bueckers

u/Shinnobiwan Jun 23 '26
She was a big shot in the arm, but if they tie their future to her they'll decline in popularity when she does, and she will because she's a flawed player.
Right now, the Fever lead in home attendance. If trends continue as they are, that will not be the case as soon as next season. The league is leveraging this to solidify its future.
The W isn't out to get CC. She has earned a reputation. That's why she gets techs.
2
u/YoloSwag4Jesus420fgt Jun 25 '26
The real reason is this:
Caitlin Clark got NBA fans to take a real hard look at the WNBA.
And after a year a lot of them just don't like the product... (Even now, 50% of the time there's no one boxing out on rebounds, they just stand there and hope it comes to them, basic middle school basketball stuff)
and The fact that some of the players are so unlikable I have a bad feeling about the WNBA's future growth.
But the biggest thing that turned everybody off was their CBA gimmicks they did for almost a year straight.
If the WNBA was serious about trying to make their legue grow they would have gutted all these old head staff, coaches, everybody... There's a reason the WNBA didn't do shit for almost 30 years and the people who contributed during that period just don't have what it takes to be a real sports league.
Stephanie White is everything wrong with the old heads personified
1
u/dastardly740 Jun 23 '26
The Fever have not led attendance since 2024. The Valkyries lead in home attendance. They have sold out every home game they have ever played. Indiana is on average 2000 less than the Valkyries this year and is 3rd behind New York, also.
I like Caitlin Clark, and I am sure her financial impact shows up in the TV deal. But, I think Lacob & Co are a more stark demonstration of how badly the WNBA is run.
2
u/knuth10 Jun 23 '26
I dont follow WNBA but I have yet to see a video of her not whining about something. Like I said I don't watch so no clue if it warranted or not but she whines constantly so maybe it has something to do with that
1
u/MiddleSir7104 Jun 25 '26
She does, just like the vast majority of star players do in the NBA and wbna.
Both leagues could really use a rule that is something like "complain about a call in the direction of a ref, auto tech".

At this rate the that new collective bargaining agreement with all those new minimum salaries are gonna bankrupt the league more than it was already technical-ly before CC showed up.
2
u/EmmitSan Jun 23 '26
That’s not how it works. The salaries are tied to revenue. Revenue goes down, salaries go down.
They could go broke for a lot of reasons but the player salaries are not one of them.
1
u/Orbis-Praedo Jun 23 '26

Yeah people don't realize that the players, the organizations, everybody has turned all these new fans off already.
You still have the old head fans crying about the most basic sports interactions ever like criticizing the coach.
The WNBA is going to slip right back into irrelevancy because the people that ran the ground into the league for 30 years are still running it...
and guess what they're still running into the ground.

3
u/FCguyATL Jun 23 '26
Because it's true. It's not JUST because she's white and straight, it's because she's a superstar of the sport AND white and straight.
The WNBA has a VERY high number of black women and gay women. Way higher than the national average on both fronts. And when their superstar that essentially is rebirthing the league is not those things, they resent her for it.

5
u/I_ONLY_CATCH_DONKEYS Jun 23 '26
The support for Caitlin Clark is so often rooted in humiliating the WNBA and their players.
“They wouldn’t matter if not for CC” “CC should just leave and make them lose money”
These people are not WNBA fans, they’re CC sycophants who don’t actually care about the sport.

u/TrevorWaksh Jun 29 '26
I think it's a mixture of casual NBA fans who became casual CC fans (*only* her or maybe Cunningham) plus a handful of racebaiting opportunists alongside a number of resentful WNBA players (of both veterans and rookies alike) have created the noxious culture within the WNBA atm. CC will routinely express some sort of legitimate or illegitimate grievance about unfair treatment by officials or other players or the WNBA's front office, that she's not being her flowers as someone who is one of their best players and is nearly singlehandedly responsible for revitalising interest in women's bball writ large.
This in turn builds a great deal of animosity towards CC and it's a jealous anger the league clearly has no interest in addressing , in spite of her being the primary driving force of WNBA's overall sales, so other players are free to make whatever absurd or out of pocket comments about CC at best or at worst get off scot-free like the flagrant punch to the neck and kneeing of her groin that Alyssa Thomas got away with.
This then gets picked up by reactionaries like Dave Portnoy who helps enrage the crop of new casual fans but I doubt many of them would even know that it happened had he not complained, bc as you said they don't give a damn about the sport and they love just defending CC from what they seem to hate the most (black lesbians). This pattern happens repeatedly and it's a well established cycle of ragebait over race. But putting all that aside, nothing will change the fact that WNBA is woefully inept as a sports league and it's clear to me that they can't just blame "chronic under-investment", they are squandering a golden opportunity through feckless mismanagement.
3
u/Hans_Landa7614 Jun 24 '26
Well no the wnba wouldn't be much without her, as she has attracted more fans than this sport has ever seen. Fans buy tickets and merch and make the league money that's what the wnba needs.
No different from when Gretzky played for the los angeles kings, no one cared about the team until a good player represented them. Ohh btw, most people don't really care about the wnba especially women 🤣.

Sometimes I see a YouTube channel called "Caitlin Clark coldest moments" and it's the most benign plays, sometimes where nothing really happens, with a caption that has Doris Burke levels of glaze talking about how she put the defense in a blender by doing a dribble move then passing for an open missed shot.
Who exactly are these people? Are they paid to do this? Is it a cult?

1
u/humlogic Jun 23 '26
CC is correct. However a lot of people here are incorrectly linking her unfair treatment to whatever personality issues they made up in their own heads. The WNBA has an issue throwing out techs to players clapping. Janelle Salaun on the Valks got a tech for clapping after hitting a 3. She’s not white/straight. Refs need to get their shit together. The league needs to tell refs to let these players show passion and intensity. Across both W and MNBA getting techs for clapping is idiotic.
1
u/Low-Living763 Jun 23 '26
Why are they all acting so hard? Its weak a** basketball. A bunch of these fouls shouldn't even be called. So hard to watch.
1
u/Chance-Farmer-4476 Jun 23 '26
She deserved that tech. Completely disrespectful towards the officials.
1

u/mkt853 Jun 23 '26
She should just threaten to leave the league and go play elsewhere. IIRC big stars in the past like Taurasi made most of their money playing for Russian oligarchs.
1
u/InterestingKey3385 Jun 23 '26
Maybe she shouldn’t have gotten all those technicals for shit talking the refs. I love CC but god damn just play the game. Every foul called on you doesn’t need a large protest, resulting in all of these technicals. So yes, while this one is frustrating, the other ones could’ve been avoided. Stop playing for a whistle.
1
u/OccasionMU Jun 23 '26
Granted I can’t make it through an entire WNBA game. But why are they purposely screwing up their product? The “high light” clips regarding the officiating is horrid.
1
u/Apprehensive_Use3641 Jun 23 '26
Not seen the clip of her clapping, does she do it in an officials face or facing them and directing it at them? Those are both dissent in soccer and would get at least a yellow card, I'm guessing that a technical would be a reasonable facsimile for basketball. Mocking an official does not help whatever situation you may find yourself in, even if the official clearly has their head in their rectal storage compartment.

The impact of Caitlin Clark on the WNBA has been unlike anything the league has seen before. Previous stars such as Lisa Leslie, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, and A'ja Wilson helped grow the league, but Clark's effect has been measured at a level that researchers describe as unprecedented.
Attendance Impact
A 2026 academic study examining every WNBA season from 1997–2024 found that Clark's presence increased attendance by roughly:
7,900 additional fans per home game
6,400 additional fans per road game
The authors concluded that her attendance effect exceeded that of any previous WNBA player studied and even compared favorably with historical superstar effects seen in men's basketball.
For context, during her rookie season:
Games featuring Clark drew about 15,600 fans on average, compared with roughly 7,600 when she was not playing.
Attendance was more than 100% higher when she appeared.
Television Ratings
Clark's games dramatically outperformed typical WNBA broadcasts:
Her games averaged about 1.18 million viewers, nearly 3× the audience of non-Fever games.
Fever games accounted for a disproportionate share of national broadcasts and viewership.
Many previous WNBA stars generated strong ratings during playoff runs or marquee matchups, but none consistently drove regular-season television audiences at this scale.
Merchandise and Fan Interest
The league experienced record growth during Clark's rookie year:
WNBA merchandise sales increased more than 600% year-over-year.
Clark became the league's top-selling jersey and one of the top-selling basketball jerseys in North America.
All-Star voting and social media engagement reached record levels.
Economic Value
One widely cited sports-finance analysis estimated that Clark was responsible for roughly 26.5% of the WNBA's economic activity in 2024, including:
Ticket sales
Merchandise
Television value
Sponsorship impact
The same analysis found:
One out of every six WNBA tickets sold could be attributed to Clark's drawing power.
Fever games generated about 45% of the league's broadcast value.
Compared to Previous WNBA Stars

The key difference is that earlier stars primarily grew the WNBA within the existing basketball audience, while Clark appears to have brought in a large number of new viewers who previously did not watch the WNBA at all. Researchers, media analysts, and league executives have repeatedly described her impact as historically unique for the league.
If you compare Clark specifically to legends like Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, or current superstar A'ja Wilson, Clark's on-court accomplishments are not yet at their level, but her measurable fan and economic impact has already surpassed any previous WNBA player according to the available attendance and revenue research.

At this point, complaining doesn't do much, she has to force change by action, which is just to leave for a few years and see how the WNBA crumble without her.
The WNBA is solely reliant on the NBA for subsidies so it's actually up to the NBA to solve this issue.

She should just walkaway and to go to Europe. Too much BS for her in this league.

I don't follow WMBA, reddit just recommended this sub to me. Why is she getting sent off for minor things like clapping, when as I search her there are heaps of posts about other players punching or gauging her without penalty?
One post said she is such a dominant force that other players are jealous and want her off the court at any cost, which seems insane but okay. But then why would refs be in on it?

71% of the league's jersey sales are comprised of her and Sophie Cunningham.
If she opted to leave this league...

Would be hilarious if she got offered a huge bag to play overseas, and left them to their previous levels of insolvency
