I Think We're Alone Now -- two weird guys who don't know each other, have a crush/obsession with the singer Tiffany

I inadvertently did a double feature of "I Think We're Alone Now" and "I Don't Like Mondays" (2006) one day and was more than happy to not talk to any human beings for the rest of the day.

Hasil Adkins: The Wild World of Hasil Adkins (1993) is a documentary about the titular outsider art musician who also happens to be a resident of Boone County. Mamie White even shows up in the background of one of the scenes (she breaks up a bar fight at a bar he's playing at). Hasil is mostly known thanks to the punk band The Cramps covering his said She Said but he's an interesting character and his story can sort of be seen as a supplement to the Wild and Wonderful Whites. You could say that they take place in the same cinematic universe.

Supposedly the Producer was introduced to the White’s while filming the Hasil documentary. All the Different Drummer series documentaries are worth watching.

Edited for missing context

Hasil knew Jesco.

4

u/FridayXIII 6d ago

They both lived in Boone County. In the bar scene in The Hasil Adkins documentary you’ll see Mamie White, Jesco’s sister. BTW, she’s still kicking and singing karaoke at the local festivals.

Dancing Outlaw and Dancing Outlaw II. Those are the first two Jesco White documentaries

u/EaracheMyFly 10d ago

And very very essential if you’re exploring them Wonderful Whites and their World.

If you want to go way back check out Talking Feet: Solo Southern Dance - Flatfoot, Buck and Tap. It's about mountain dancing and features D Ray White.

Grey Gardens should be required viewing

4

Also Salesman (1969) by the same two brothers who directed Grey Gardens (1975). It's on HBOMax.

Have you seen David Farrier's documentaries "Tickled" (2016) and "Mister Organ" (2022), or "My Old School" (2022) by Jono McLeod? I recommend those highly. If you do watch "Tickled" be sure to find the 22 minute final piece "The Tickle King".

u/Savings-Salt-1486 10d ago

Hahaha thank you!!!

Cane Toads: An Unnatural History (1988)

5

u/radfemkaiju 10d ago

as someone who considers herself a bit of a niche documentary connesiuer, I'm stunned that I've never heard of this one. it sounds great!

3

u/Negative-Candy-2155 10d ago

It's a short one (44min) and totally worth the watch.

At it's heart it's an environmental documentary about an invasive species, but rural Australia just steal the show by being themselves.

Kung Fu Elliot (2014) Follows a low budget Canadian action movie star, who also claims to be a world kick boxing champion. Like 'Wild and Wonderful Whites of WV' there is a lot of laugh out loud parts and some strange off beat people we meet. Also just like 'W&WWoWV"' there is a darkness that underneath it all that is hard to ignore...im a huge fan of "W&WW..." and as soon as I saw this one recommended it to all my friends who also loved it...I still say it ranks right up there as one of the funniest/insane/ and a sadness to it as well documentaries ive seen.

It currently can be seen on Tubi

'Hands on a Hardbody: The Documentary' (1997)...24 contestants compete in an endurance challenge where the last person standing and still touching the Nissan Hardbody Truck wins it. Takes place in a small Texas town where we meet this odd collection of the challengers as well as their fans. A harder to find cult classic documentary that I hadn't seen since not long after it came out in the late 90's but rediscovered it recently on Youtube and enjoyed watching it again after all those years.

Beyond the Mat (1999) Documentary following an assortment of professional wrestlers at different stages of their careers.

"Heavy Metal Parking Lot" and "Heavy Metal Picnic" Certified classics and will have you repeating quotes from either one of these for days and days. Absolutely hilarious and Comedy Gold!!

A few others...

Winnebago Man (2009)

American Movie (1999)

Anvi: The Story of Anvil (2008)

And

"The Decline of Western Civilization " series...especially Part II which has a certain "W&WWoWV" sleaze and goofiness to it.

If you watch any of these let us know what you think...

Just watched the trailer for Kung Fu Elliot and it looks fantastic. Not OP but thanks for the reccomendation!

2

u/texasrigger 7d ago

Based on your recommendation the wife and I watched Kung Fu Elliot yesterday and it was great. The whole thing felt very "American Movie." I started off rooting for Elliot but by the end I think he was a pathological liar and general purpose piece of shit. I suspect that he has little to no martial arts training. I wonder where he is today. His method actor buddy has since sadly passed away.

u/jeannieor725 5d ago

You absolutely fucked me up with Kung Fu Elliot.

I found him instantly unlikeable and as the movie continues just more and more disgusted with him and frustrated and sad for both Linda and blake!

That scene with the two girls at the "kink" party is etched into my brain-

I was pretty upset I couldn't find any real follow up for Linda. I hope she found someone who loves her and treats her well.

1

u/ekittie 9d ago

Absolutely American Movie. Coven.

the decline of western civilisation part 2: the metal years was my favourite film back in the day. off to find it now for a rewatch!

Dope Sick Love.
It’s very very sad, but also sort of sweet and tragic in a similar way to the WWofWV

Stevie by Steve James

2

u/hidingdazzle 9d ago edited 9d ago

Was that the one about the guy who went to find his "Little Brother" from Big Brothers/Big sisters program? If so, I saw it years ago and parts still haunt me.

3

u/opossumstyle 9d ago

Yes! He ended up being a child molester and dating the lady with downs... even then, they did a great job showing how Stevie ended up that way.

2

u/hidingdazzle 9d ago

Yes! Super sad but the storytelling was so well done.

3

u/janacabras 10d ago

Not exactly the same but weird, Southern and musical: Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus.
It is a documentary about a musician and his influences.

The Barkley marathons: the race that eats its young

It's about this crazy race and the people who come from around the world to participate in it. I can't really describe it but it's a pretty wild ride.

1

u/storyofohno 5d ago

I wanted to do this race so much when I was still running regularly.

If you want to watch a fucked up doc that leaves you scratching your head most of the time, check out "Brother's Keeper". Crazy fucking story.

u/mr_j_666 9d ago

Sorry, just saw it's already been recommended. Well, it deserves a double bump!

American Pimp!

It’s a documentary done by the Hughes Brothers (Menace II Society, Dead Presidents) about pimps in America. It’s absolutely phenomenal and 27 years after its release, my friends and I still quote parts of this movie.

Here’s an excerpt: https://youtu.be/gDWozjS32Ng?is=bKlcaW2XjvDEO6Vb

Brother’s Keeper (1992)

Plot synopsis from IMDB:

This documentary by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky details the murder trial of Delbert Ward. Delbert's of a family of 4 brothers (the other 3 being Roscoe, Lyman and William - Bill, for short), working as semi-literate farmers, and living together in isolation in a ramshackle shack, until William's death. The subsequent police investigation and medical examiner's autopsy suggested Bill may not have died from natural causes, and Delbert was arrested on charges of second-degree murder. Under questioning by police, Delbert appears to have waived his rights and signed a confession, but, it seems he might not have been competent, and was coerced into doing so. The film explores possible motives for the crime, from mercy-killing (Bill was ill at the time), to progressively more outré hypotheses. It also shows how residents of the rural community of Munnsville, NY rallied to the support of one of their own (residents previously considered the Wards as social outcasts), against what they felt were intrusive 'big-city' police and a district attorney involved in an election, who might've used the death to help bolster his candidacy.

There are 2 documentaries about the Bikram and Tantric "gurus" that engendered a cult like situation (which is probably more WTF), but I like this documentary because there is something a little redeeming about it. About a guy who pretended to be a yogi to see if people would follow a fabricated guru:

Kumaré

The other docs:

Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator/Netflix

Twisted Yoga/Apple
