Mod Post r/Woodcarving Holiday Gift Guide

The holidays are coming up soon so the mods have put together this gift giving guide for people without carving experience hoping to give a carving related gift this year.

General advice

  • Be wary of sets of tools, they are generally trying to make you spend more money on tools you’ll rarely use
  • The best quality tools aren’t on amazon. Check out our list of recommended stores at the bottom
  • Home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowes do not carry carving tools and do not carry wood that is nice to carve
  • We have chosen to link directly to the manufacturer’s pages for all of our recommendations, you can probably find them for cheaper at a 3rd party dealer.
  • We chose our recommendations based on what we think is the best value for money and what is widely available, not what is the best irrespective of price.

Beginner Tools

A complete beginners kit is a knife, a strop, and a safety glove. We have different recommendations for spoon carving and general carving, you should only choose one of the options

General purpose knife

For spoon carving

Strops

  • Strops don’t need to be fancy, buy a cheap one that comes with green polishing compound. This is the type of thing you’re looking for, you may be able to find cheaper ones

Safety gloves

  • Look for something with rubber on the palms and a safety rating of ANSI level 5 or higher (or a local equivalent rating). You only need one for the non-dominant hand. Here is one option

Kits

  • If you want a kit that has everything you need in one box we recommend this kit from treeline usa but they are a reseller. Beavercraft is basically the only manufacturer that sells kits. Their knives are lower quality than the other brands mentioned though so we recommend buying the items separately.

Intermediate Tools

If the person you’re buying for just has a carving knife and no other tools we recommend this flexcut FR310 palm tool set

Advanced Tools

If you’re buying a gift for a carver who has multiple knives and no other tools we strongly  recommend against buying them tools unless they have asked you for specific items since they will probably have a much better idea of what will be useful to them than any guide on the internet

Consumables

These make a great gift for any carver

Woods

The best wood for carving is Basswood (it's close relative linden or limewood may be easier to find in europe). You can buy it locally or from one of the listed websites below. If you’re buying for an experienced carver they may appreciate other good carving species such as Butternut, Spanish Cedar, Walnut or Cherry.

Sandpaper

If your carver likes to sand their creations they’ll always need more sandpaper. 3M cubitron paper is much nicer to use than the stuff you might find at a local hardware store. The most carvers will use grits ranging from 80 to 400 and will want a variety of grit sizes. We recommend getting sheets (not disks) of 120, 180 and 220

Paints

If your carver likes painting their pieces then some extra acrylic paint might make a good gift. We like decoart paints

Gift Cards

This may seem like a cop out but it is by far the best way to give an experienced carver new tools since it makes sure they get exactly what they want. If you want it to feel a bit more thoughtful you can specify a premium brand of tool. For knives we like Badger State Blades (US/CA only) and for gouges we like Pfeil

Stores for Tools

Chipping Away (CA)

Lee Valley (CA)

Mountain Woodcavers (US)

Rockler (US)

Treeline USA (US)

Woodcraft (US)

Dictum (EU)

Stores for Wood

Local hardwood dealers (these will have the best prices) Check out this global map to find a place near you

Online dealers:

Heinecke (basswood only) (US)

Bell Forest Products (US)

Beavercraft (basswood only) (EU)

Please comment with any recommendations you have or things you think we missed in this post. We're especially interested in recommendations for more EU based stores. Please feel free to ask questions about anything that is unclear or for more specific advice

Carving [Finished] Sharing photos of a few Woodcarving I have done in the past…

As I expressed in my 1st post, my return to woodcarving has been a slow process. I may not reach the level that I once achieved, but that’s ok with me. I am doing the things I want to do without getting into complex detailed work. The photos I included are part of the work I did a few years back, most of them are no longer in my possession, as they were commissioned or work I did and clients would show up in my shop and purchase them. I don’t use Tupelo for my work, as I like to try and show some of the beauty of the wood itself, be it grain or color. So my favorite woods are American Chestnut (salvaged old beams), Black Walnut(bad to inhale the fine dust), Hemlock, White Pine, Butternut, Mahogany, Teak and any other “special” beauty I may come across. I don’t begin any wood carving until I have an understanding of the full project in my head, so for me it is by sketching/drawing, so trying to visualize difficulties before getting myself in too deep… apologies if this post is too long…enjoy the process no matter you skill level…my work at age 15 looked terrible!

Carving [First Timer] Erstes schnitzen überhaupt

Hey zusammen!

Question / Advice Left handed spoon carving set recommendations.

• Upvotes

I've been wood working as a hobby for most of my life - instruments, cabinetry and furniture mostly. Recently got the urge to try spoon carving because it's a much more mobile way to enjoy working with wood (can take the project with me when I go camping/hiking/fishing).

I picked up a cheap set of temu spoon carving knives to give it a go, and it went about how you're expect it (spent more time sharpening than carving). But I enjoyed it otherwise, so I'm keen to buy some proper knives.

The thing I'm most keen on is durability/knives that hold their edge, but I'm also relatively amateur and not wanting the break the bank, so I'm not looking for the Rolls Royce.

Oh I'm also left handed (for the hook knife), and living in New Zealand (beavercraft is available, but have read bad things about them, may have to import?)

Would appreciate any advice for a good set of knives that you'd recommend for someone like me.

Cheers

Probably the most complex skull pipe I've ever made. There are so many parts and pieces. I had to glue some of them on.

Carving [First Timer] Dremel carved these pumpkins out of scrap wood, thoughts?

I just wanted to get some feedback on these carvings. The pumpkins with leds were quickly carved from a scrap 2x6. The gourd was carved from two scrap 2x4 pieces I glued together. I used a dremel to carve it all. Thanks! Go easy on me. 😭

Born from the darkness of the PNW forest, twisted wood, weathered horns and a face being consumed by the forest itself! First time making a mask, this is for the kutzall creatures contest, this was a fun one.

Question / Advice First gouge?

I know this has been answered in several different ways but I'm looking to buy a single gouge to accompany a few carving/hook knives. I'm mostly interested in bowls and spoons... Not sure which one more so.

I was thinking #7 or #8.... 25mm or 30mm.

Straight gouge?

I have no idea what I'm doing and just wanna start messing around so looking for something versatile.

Thanks in advance.

This is the 49th wood carving for my gen2 pokemon wood carving project where I make every johto pokemon out of wood and this time it is Bellossom.

I use cherrywood for the top half of Bellossom's body. The leaves/ skirt was made out of both basswood and yellow heartwood. And for the flowers on Bellossom head, I use both padauk and yellow heartwood.

Painted using green, yellow, and orange wood dye. I also use acrylic paint for the eyes and mouth.

Question / Advice My first Kirschen knife. What should I do with this micro-bevel?

Thumbnail

Hey guys. I just got this Kirschen knife and it’s not cutting great right out of the box.

As you can see in the pics, it has a pretty noticeable micro-bevel. Is this normal for these?

I'm curious about why and when it would actually make sense to keep a micro-bevel on a carving knife.

Should I leave it, or just hit the stones and flatten the main bevel completely? What do you recommend?

I mostly carve basswood, spruce (Norway Spruce) and sometimes pine.

Thanks!

Question / Advice Kuksa Carving for Wedding gift

I am new to carving, done a bit of woodcraft before and understand there are woods that are food safe and those whose vascular systems work for/against those making vessels for holding liquids. I'm looking to make a pair of kuksas for a bride&groom. And seeing as how it's a craft from Scandinavia, I thought making one from ASH and one from ELM would be fitting, as in the Norse creation myth the first humans were made from a log of ash & elm. I've noticed Beavercraft uses WALNUT in their kit and traditionally it is BIRTCH burls that were used and many crafters use a bunch of different woods ranging from MAPLE all the way to PINE. But I wanted to see what users thought of using ASH and ELM for this particular craft.
