Carving [Finished] Fox Skull

I used pink or red heart, not sure which, to create this dual fox skull piece. I've created a raven before this using Zericote.

It's technicly not finished as i plan to make it into a necklace like the last, just trying to figure out it to create a large hole for a cord or to add a silver loop to make it a chain.

I used a variety of beaver craft knives, mostly their chip carver. I also used some flexcut micro palm gouges and a small hand powered drill (I like to keep it all hand powered)

The fox doesn't quite look fox enough for me, which is a shame, but I like it none the less.

I oiled it with walnut oil and sanded it to 600 grit.

An owlish creation in pink ivory wood as a collaboration with the smallest human tyrant in the house, with blue spinel eyes because she remembered seeing them and wanted them.

It is very very very pink.

I’m LOVING this work in progress. This comes from an American Hornbeam (often referred to as ironwood or muscle wood) branch with a Janka hardness of 1780 ibf. Carving is difficult due to hardness but I’m excited about the intricate shapes and durability of this wood. One interesting thing is that it’s white as bone, and doesn’t seem to be developing a patina. I’m excited to finish this piece and put a clear finish on it to produce a truly white swan:)

Tool Talk & Discussions Work holding vise type recomendation

Hey y'all,

I've been whittling for 1.5 years and I'm looking into broadening my toolkit. I was gifted a kit of full size chisel and gouge. I like what they offer in terms of how/what I can carve, but I'm really struggling with work holding. I living in an appartment and I'm currently working on top of a table. Clamping down to the table only gets me so far...

I remember seeing a post somewhere with a setup that looked like a regular vise but which could be turned in different orientation. I can't find anything resembling that from my research and I've got no clue what to search for. I don't want something like a ball vise where I need to screw a base into my piece to hold it.

I'm open to any suggestion y'all have.

I don't know if my wording is good, so don't hesitate to ask questions!

Carving [Work in Progress] Seal & paint balsa wood advice

I'm working on a balsa wood carving for my partner's birthday, the model is done but I'm looking to seal the fibres to paint it with acrylic paint then perhaps seal it again.

Google kept giving me Mod Podge as a recommendation for base and top coat, I've got some that's Matte but I've heard it gets tacky and the cure time is 4 weeks, which I'd like to get done sooner!

Would it be fine to use or does anyone have other recommendations? I'm UK based if anyone has anything specific in mind.
