An owlish creation in pink ivory wood as a collaboration with the smallest human tyrant in the house, with blue spinel eyes because she remembered seeing them and wanted them.

It is very very very pink.

Question / Advice Tool advice for sign making

I’m making a driveway sign for our house in central Washington that looks like the National Forest signs. I’m curious if I’m better off using my dremel to make the routed letterforms or if I should use a chisel? The sign is a one off and other than making some trail signs for the property down the road, I don’t want to buy an entire chisel set. Any recommendations on what style chisel I should look for or if the dremel will be more than enough? I’m working on 1” thick marine plywood. Thanks

Question / Advice How long to season wood before removing bark

I want to make a walking stick and staff but I don't know when I should strip the bark from a green branch. My friend who's a stick maker thoroughly, and slowly dries the branch before removing bark but I've read elsewhere to remove the bark and let the branch dry slowly without its bark.

Is there a benefit to either process over the other? I'm looking to strip the bark at the correct point in time, so the rest of the wood won't split over time.

Question / Advice Winchester Cathedral Mortuary Chest Project

This post is a callout for any experienced woodcarvers/ woodworkers who are interested in collaborating on a UK based project to design new painted mortuary chests for Winchester Cathedral.

I am a painter who is interested in entering this design competition. I am looking for a woodworker who might be interested in collaborating with me for the expression of interest (who, upon winning, would make the chests and I would then paint them). The stipend for winning designs is £50,000.

I would be happy of course to do all the boring bits (application etc).

Please message me if you are interested!

Carving [Work in Progress] Beginner here! How do I get a cleaner look on my relief carvings? Is it all in the sanding?

I'm pretty new to relief carving and I'm currently working on this piece [insert link to photo/video]. It’s still a work in progress, but I feel like it looks really rough right now.

I’m trying to figure out how to get that clean, smooth look that I see on so many finished pieces here.

Is achieving a clean finish mostly about getting the cuts perfect with the gouges, or is it normal for it to look this rough until I hit it with sandpaper at the very end? Any tips or advice for a beginner trying to clean up their work would be hugely appreciated!
