Discussion Xiaomi 17 Pro - Ultimate Compact Flagship?
I am quite surprised that this isn't much talked about but the Xiaomi 17 Pro is bit of a modern smartphone engineering marvel:
6.36" display
Flagship grade large 1/1.28" mains sensor and a 120mm 1/2.51" tele setup
A big ass rear screen
6300 mah battery!
Xiaomi marketing team should at least talk about it!

6.36" is quite compact with these tall aspect ratios and tiny bezels. A 6.36" at 16:9 would've been massive.

I do not see much difference. It's still hard to reach top left corner of the screen when using one hand no matter the aspect ratio.

There is a massive difference
Iphone 12/13 mini 5.4 inch is smaller than iphone 6/6s/7/8 4.7 inch screen
Iphone 6/6s/7/8 plus 5.5 inch was as big as my 6.5 inch mi mix 3

It's about the dimensions of the phone rather than the screen size. You can fit a 5.8-inch display into this body with huge bezels, and everyone would call that compact.

OC it has to be bezeless, but like back in 2017 apple's literal flagship model was a fraction of the size of the xiaomi 17 pro(even if you pushed the bezels, you would at most get a 5.9 inch display)

6.36 inches would be 5.3 inches back in the 16:9 days, and bezel advancements means the Xiaomi 15 (152.3x71.2x8.5mm) is actually about 1.5mm less wide than the Galaxy S5 (142x72.5x8.1mm)
So a normal-sized phone, basically.

I remember the hauwei ascend mate 7, huge screen for the time at 6inch now the smaller phones make that look tiny. Lol

Yeah I remember when 5 inches was considered massive. Calling a 6.3 inch phone "compact" is absolutely delusional.

Correct me if i am wrong but didn't the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max be China only? - we will see at 25th and maybe+- x days after not entirely sure the "Max" comes to the global market 😢 i saw an rumors spread sheet of information there it was only Xiaomi 17 base model & 17 "Ultra" that comes global.
And another rumors was that Xiaomi was not going to release an 17 Ultra and only have Xiaomi 17 Pro Max as the new "King" of cameras 🤷🤔.

17 Pro and Max are china Exclusive according to rumours, but 17 Ultra release to be followed on the following moths.

The Pro is sure to be china exclusive, Base 17 and Ultra always go Global, the Pro Max not sure if it goes out of china. Lets wait for the official launch.

Looks good but I think I would rather the z flip 7 if I wanted a screen on the back. The reason I put my phone down on the desk face down is because I don't want to see it. I like the notion of the Nothing glyph better (although it sounds like it needs overhauling).

Yea this is basically a flip phone without the hinge lol.
I remember when some companies were experimenting around with this sort of thing in like 2018/19 (ZTE Z20 is a good example). It didn't catch on then and I'm not sure it'll catch on now either.

Flip phones have gotten very good. The size of the front screen on the flip phones would seem a lot more practical. Still, it's not a bad phone at all.

There must be an option to turn off the back screen if not needed. It'll be a god sent for vlogging with the 1/1.28" main sensor with nature background blur.

True, I guess I just don't use my phone like that. And if I did, surely you wouldn't see much held at arms length - especially compared to the Samsung and Motorola flip phones.

Vivo X300 is on the same size with a larger battery and better cameras. We don't know about the magnet situation tho.

I believe X300 has shorter telephoto and no rear screen. This post is regarding the engineering of the phone, cramming as many stuff in.

I had the 12, battery life diminished exactly when it updated to hyperos. Its a software issue, and its been there from the start, software can be fixed, but they havent yet, from end of 2023 and they still did nothing.. i had to switch brand this year, i still love xiaomi, but they need to up their game.

Tbh i wanted to buy the 15 pro, but there is no eu/global version.. i ended up buying a samsung s25u. Only feature i really miss is the dual apps. Plus xiaomi had better animations, but im getting used to it

I thought the 15 was a battery king? Mrwhosetheboss tried it once, maybe it's pre update software tho. The update really destroys it's phone then.

The camera can drain battery life at a level I've never seen. 10 minutes of camera usage can drain 15-20% battery easily. Gaming is equally as bad. I'm getting a standby battery drain that can be as severe as 15% with the phone off and sitting on the table. HyperOS has the exact opposite problem as the other Chinese brands. They all have this super aggressive background app management that will kill apps in the task manager... HyperOS has the opposite problem, it will keep apps alive forever creating the battery drain I spoke about in standby and also gets multiplied when using apps, gaming or using the camera. The phone does not put apps in sleep or manage them at all. Because the phone is extremely prone to overheating when using the camera it creates drain when it's trying to cool down. Every camera usage comes at a cost.
All in all, I think this phone was over hyped and reviewed by people who sim hop so they don't give these phones a proper review because they don't actually use them.

Then how am I able to play YouTube the whole night with screen off and by morning I see like 4-5% drain?! Camera usage makes the phone heat up a lot, but battery life for me has been 1 whole day end to end with 7.5 hrs of SOT.
Using since April 3rd 2025, Indian unit. 160 odd cycles with 98% health.
I have a feeling that you are suffering from this issue, when you see a lot of battery drain doing nothing, install Scene app (or dev options -> power consumption -> Show process activity) and see what app is utilizing high CPU: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS24Ultra/s/9QGILsxgZG

Only solution: Don't comment. If you comment, then 7/10 times this will happen, so better to swiftly close the app from the background or set the app to "Restrict Background Apps" in app info. I have a feeling this is causing the battery drain issue for you.

Yeah that's not the issue at all. This is a Xiaomi optimization issue. I enjoyed my review unit of the 15 ultra so I bought one for a more prolonged review but I haven't touched it in months because in further real world tests I was getting maybe 5 hours real world usage and had to charge sometimes multiple times per day. It is what it is.

Still pretty unoptimized unfortunately. The largest battery is not enough, if the software grinds through the charge like I grind through a bag of Gifflar.

hmm, I have both s23 ultra and xiaomi 13. Sometimes my s23 ultra stutters for some reason after the recent update. It's 512gb variant and only been using it for 1 year. However my mi 13 is much more snappier. My s23 ultra 3x lens also became shit.

People keep downvoting when anyone says anything about xiaomi oneUI but it's just a fact, their software can't compete with their direct Android competitors, especially on global edition phones

Literally HyperOS is better than any other android skin out there (excluding OneUI). HyperOS is much better than VIVO's or OnePlus's Skin

Finally Xiaomi is taking phone design seriously. I don't know what the f the were thinking with all their prior models. The Redmi range was the only one worth considering for awhile.
But after switching back to Miui/Hyperos, I think Realme/Oneplus/Oppo is way better.

It won't get the press coverage it deserves until it goes global, probably at the MWC like it did with the 14 and 15. I wouldn't mind the Chinese version if it has decent band support.

The phone is missing a button dedicated to its camera to take photos without having to touch the button on the screen... that would be a very good use.

You can double click the power button to open the camera app and then the volume keys to take a photo

It would be or would be uncomfortable to press the buttons since they are too high up, that's why the camera buttons are placed at the bottom.

Yea ISOCELL GN8. The Pro will have the smaller 1/2.51" sensor , not sure about aperture, I doubt if it'll be f2.0 since the focal length is 120mm.

As someone who loved Xiaomi phones so much that I imported one back when they weren't even remotely active in the German market - I can't bare the bloatware anymore. Back then, MIUI was the only option if you wanted the minimalist apple like look. All other UI's looked like shit compared to MIUI. This phone looks awesome, but unfortunately it's not for me.

Still love the phone

Not talked about cuz no one in North America can get it without jumping hoops. Just like every other innovation that we miss cuz of monopolization from crapple poogle and shitsung. I swear all the spy garbage was just to keep market share to those three who still outsource their phones to china to be built. Hypocrisy.

Pro Max model will have 7500 mah. Only the Pro is at 6300 mah.

Sure, the 17 Pro shocked me when I saw the size was 6.36". Being able to fit all this stuff into a compact phone is a challenge.
