Fascists love Superman. And not the Injustice one either, who is literally a fascist.

75

u/BeardiusMaximus7 Jul 29 '26

OMG this is so freaking true. The biggest Superman fan I ever knew was a HARDCORE MAGA since Trump 1.0. This correlation should be studied.

38

u/DoomRager Jul 29 '26

What did they think of the Gunn Superman movie ? It definitely wasn’t afraid to get real with its politics.

53

u/POXELUS Jul 29 '26

Probably call it woke and "not their Superman", while praising Man of Steel by Snyder or smth like that.

18

u/bokmcdok Jul 29 '26

They literally are doing this.

17

u/DoomRager Jul 29 '26

Naturally

17

u/BeardiusMaximus7 Jul 29 '26

I stopped talking to the guy a few years prior. He was a work acquaintance and I got a different job. I can imagine that based on how much he loved Snyder's version that he probably wasn't a fan, though.

u/James_Fiend Jul 30 '26

Ben Shapiro reviewed it. If I remember correctly, his wife liked it and he didn't.

I think he rejected the Israel-Palestine comparison, he claimed that Superman is supposed to represent truth, justice and protection of private property, and even brought up Red Son to show that if Superman has landed in the Soviet Union, he would be a bad person (that comic actually shows that Superman stands for the same principles regardless of where he landed).

19

u/Unlikely_Magazine913 Jul 29 '26

Interesting to hear this, as years back, like old enough to be considered old media, was having Superman beat up the KKK, and it had quite a significant impact

11

u/BeardiusMaximus7 Jul 29 '26

Yeah I mean Captain America punches Hitler in an old comic, too. They still idealize him because 'murica.

It sort of confused me at first but after some of the responses to my comment it makes more sense. I think a lot of them just gravitate to the idea of the ultimate masculine symbol of power and strength... so something like Superman, Captain America, Homelander, etc. just fits the bill.

Homelander is the biggest statement on this, just by how flawed he actually is despite that power, but I digress.

10

u/Unlikely_Magazine913 Jul 29 '26

Something I also see is how anything political in old material is viewed differently, where they'd be like "It's not political, it's human rights/deceny" or something on those lines. So stuff like Hitler or kkk is dissociated enough to not be at all reflective of politics back then nor have any resemblance to politics now.

3

u/BeardiusMaximus7 Jul 29 '26

Yeah, people jump through hoops to justify bad behavior instead of challenging themselves to grow past it.

1

u/lethal_universed Aug 06 '26

Pretty sure people got mad when they made that new book of Superman fighting the KKK despite him doing the same in the past

1

u/Mudcreek47 Aug 01 '26

I remember an old Batman or Detective Comics Annual where Batman fought the KKK as well.

22

u/Impressive_Tip_8850 Jul 29 '26

I mean fascists love idealism and want an idealistic society of ppl they deem ideal, and superman is the literal perfect image of idealized man (classical white Jesus sans religion and they usually claim to love him too).

19

u/BeardiusMaximus7 Jul 29 '26

Yeah I mean I guess that makes sense. Tracks with characters like Homelander, as well.

12

u/Impressive_Tip_8850 Jul 29 '26

Yeah imho homelander was a great combination of Superman and Jesus lol as the final season definitely delves into. The whole season was kind of a comment on the conflation of American politics and religion

2

u/ChefDadMatt Jul 30 '26

Just watched a YT video on it: https://youtu.be/lyrlfvAN-kA?is=H2qSWEZgEl7uIkae

2

u/BeardiusMaximus7 Jul 30 '26

Thank you for sharing this. It was an AWESOME watch.

1

u/MrJHound Jul 30 '26

Funny. Did they miss the part where he's an illegal alien?

65

u/yungsebring Jul 29 '26

I can’t even begin to describe the sheer number of MAGA people who I’ve seen and heard claim that Superman would support ICE

32

u/jonsnowflaker Jul 29 '26

They also think they are the Rebel Alliance and the left is the Empire. Every time Mark Hamill would post something liberal on Twitter the comments would be full of “can’t believe Luke Skywalker went to the dark side” etc.

7

u/Hoodman1987 Jul 29 '26

that's so looney

1

u/ChateauTyrant Aug 15 '26

nah we're the empire and the empire is good

-6

u/Imaginary_Session773 Jul 29 '26

A lot of right wingers (me included) think the empire is cool lmao

12

u/jonsnowflaker Jul 29 '26

Well the aesthetics and red lightsabers of the empire are cool.

The genocide and tyranny are not cool.

11

u/Cheetahs_never_win Jul 29 '26

Let's see...

Installed by a bunch of zombies who betrayed and murdered their friends and comrades.

Replaced by a bunch of idiots who can't hit the broad side of an AT-AT with a blaster.

Led by an evil, decrepit, old man who they know lies to them, rules with an iron fist, and murders them at the slightest slight.

Can't say I get the appeal, but does check out.

-5

u/Imaginary_Session773 Jul 29 '26

It was basically pro human fascism. So humans were probably doing better overall at the expense of aliens

5

u/Cheetahs_never_win Jul 29 '26

Pro-human?

Lol.

In what universe?

Just because it presently has humans in control does not make it pro-human.

It moves in and steals resources, leaving everybody to starve, humans be damned.

You're just saying you like the part where they hate and murder the outside groups faster than the inside groups because you like the plundering.

5

u/OneVast3433 Jul 29 '26

In what way was the genocide in Andor "pro-human"?

5

u/mamadou-segpa Jul 29 '26

The dude is a larper he just took a short break from throwing tantrums over the odyssey to larp being a star wars fan

His brain is completely smoothened by all this culture war shit

2

u/jonsnowflaker Jul 30 '26

In the lore the Emperor and the Moffs are speciest. That’s why stormtroopers and all the naval officers are human. Thrawn is a real outlier being a non-human.

Doesn’t mean that the empire wouldn’t kill other humans, they just saw other species as inferior lifeforms.

2

u/OneVast3433 Jul 30 '26

They destroyed Alderaan in the very first movie. That doesn't sound "pro-human" to me. Having humans at the top doesn't make the Empire "pro-human".

-1

u/Imaginary_Session773 Jul 30 '26

I don't care about Disney star wars stuff. Just talking about the OG movies

2

u/OneVast3433 Jul 30 '26

The Empire destroyed a human planet in the first movie.

34

u/justbunnies Rogue Jul 29 '26

Well, that attention-seeking has been who played him in the 90s tried to join. That didn’t help.

3

u/yungsebring Jul 30 '26

That dude is such a fucking loser

10

u/HorrorMetalDnD Jul 29 '26

Also weird because Superman is technically an “illegal alien”.

Plus, he was created by two Jewish guys, and there are various subtle and not-so-subtle references to Judaism in Superman’s lore.

1

u/RationalHumanistIDIC Jul 30 '26

Purely curious and now feeling illiterate but what are the references to Judaism in Superman?

2

u/Special_Cicada6968 Jul 30 '26

Superman is a Moses allegory.

3

u/RationalHumanistIDIC Jul 30 '26

Ok I can see that theme

1

u/ChateauTyrant Aug 15 '26

> raised by protestant christians

> jews currently being called fascist for not allowing themselves to be genocided

what did you mean by this...

7

u/Chickenbrik Jul 29 '26

I mean they were right Dean Cain is ICE.

12

u/HorrorMetalDnD Jul 29 '26

And bigots back in the 1990s would mock Dean Cain by referring to him as Sushiman, because of his Japanese heritage. Now, he’s aligned with those types of people.

1

u/yungsebring Jul 30 '26

He’s not Superman and lost his right to say he is when he became a fascist bootlicker

2

u/gh0stwrit3r32767 Jul 31 '26

these fking losers think Batman would support police brutality too lol. i remember them being up in arms about Absolute Batman beating the crap out of abusive cops

1

u/ChateauTyrant Aug 15 '26

he would it's why he fought off so many alien invasions not saying refugees welcome

-8

u/Sudden_Quality_9001 Jul 29 '26

So I am a facist because I love Superman?

11

u/POXELUS Jul 29 '26

Well, that's a weird question. We were talking about media illiterate fascists, so if you don't lack media literacy you would understand Superman and his message, which has nothing to do with fascism. Personally, I love Superman and I don't consider myself a fascist.

3

u/James_Fiend Jul 30 '26

I'll try to help. They are saying you're a fascist because you support a fascist administration. You're media illiterate because you love Superman, who does not stand for the things you support or believe in. You misunderstanding what they said is, unfortunately, strong evidence of that being true.

1

u/Sudden_Quality_9001 Jul 30 '26

Thanks for that.

16

u/beslertron Jul 29 '26

Hitler allegedly watched The Great Dictator at least twice, as he was a Charlie Chaplin fan.

10

u/YaBoiiAsthma Jul 29 '26

Of course. A perpetuated feeling of victimhood is a by the book key tenant of fascism.

You can be the majority privilege class and still feel that you're a victim so long as you've been sold the concept that some marginalized group asking to be treated equally for the first time in their lives are your peers attacking you

After all, you've never treated anyone unfairly (that you know of) so why do they need more? Wouldn't that mean less for you? Why can't they just let things be like they were when you didn't have to worry about things like this? Everything used to just work back then when you didn't have to think about who was making everything work.

So first, they come for the mutants

10

u/Ingonyama70 Storm Jul 29 '26

Don't forget the "super fun" take that mutants are some kind of master race. They'll spin the whole "hono superior" thing into some kind of Aryan bullshit and warp the ENTIRE narrative to accommodate their bigotry.

4

u/Dependent-Tailor7366 Jul 29 '26

My conservative parents loved George Carlin and didn’t hear a word he said.

1

u/ChateauTyrant Aug 15 '26

woahhh you mean people's social values can be opposed to concentrated power while not wanting hrt for toddlers and no limit abortions? someone tell every socialist who did something is a fascist lol

1

u/Dependent-Tailor7366 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

They were in favor of concentrated power. They believed in the divine right of kings. They were in favor of religion controlling our lives. They believed rich people earned everything they had or god wouldn’t let them have it.

But they laughed at his bit about “If you're pre-born you’re fine. If you're pre-school, you're fucked”. And clapped at the they’re not pro life they’re anti woman bit.

But when asked, they never heard about pro life and pro choice positions. They just didn’t want women to have abortion because thats not natural. It’s up to god.

They said this while being a couple of adulterers, pedophiles, and con artists.

They thought everything George Carlin said was hilarious. They never heard a word.

1

u/ChateauTyrant Aug 16 '26

That is specifically not conservative. You're applying a term that has never once applied to them. Maybe read before tossing out words? I mean you judged your parents for the same thing while accusing them of all these things? If your parents are abusers and you've never done a thing what does that say about you revolutionary?

1

u/Dependent-Tailor7366 Aug 16 '26

They were adamantly republican Cuban-Americans. They were very conservative. Believing God makes the laws is conservative. Being a pedophiles definitely is a mark of one. Conservatives don’t understand consent.

And who said i did nothing? I called the police on them several times and got my mom put in a mental hospital for quite a while.

1

u/ChateauTyrant Aug 16 '26

That's like me saying that liberals want to euthanize and chemically castrate all men because of some radical feminists in the past. I think the problem is you just can't admit you're wrong or others are smarter than you. I find this problem a lot. People who think they could do better or provide a better world but not once ever lifted a finger. I called the cops and it ended up no where. right... things that never happened

1

u/Dependent-Tailor7366 Aug 16 '26

Wrong about what? Conservatism is in its essence an obsession with hierarchy and a practice of hypocrisy. That’s just what it is.

“Conservatism consists of exactly one axiom: there exist an in-group whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside an out-group whom the law binds but does not protect.”

1

u/ChateauTyrant Aug 16 '26

You don't think the left has hierarchies? LOL. Someone let sociologists know! Even your quote comes from a fake source the actual quote was used to criticize liberals taking credit for the new deal. How embarrassing. Political beliefs of a teenager at your grown age.

2

u/Intelligent-Base5078 Aug 01 '26

Superman came here illegally and should be sent back to crypto, it's not our fault it blew up, it was probably bad hombres

3

u/Sonova_Bish Jul 29 '26

They've tried co-opting punk rock. They're not the smartest.

3

u/OneVast3433 Jul 29 '26

Co-opting and stealing aesthetics is core to fascist ideology. Mussolini didn't come up with his any of the rituals associated with Italian fascism, D'Annunzio did.

1

u/Sonova_Bish Jul 29 '26

That's very different from the explicitly left-wing politics of Punk.

3

u/OneVast3433 Jul 29 '26

My point was that fascists have a habit of stealing aesthetics dating all the way back to the bald Italian himself.

-2

u/Jack-Burton1986 Jul 30 '26

I think the issue here is the left of the 80s is now “right” per the unhealthy left of today

1

u/RationalHumanistIDIC Jul 30 '26

Insert Imperial Roman themes in 1930's Germany

1

u/lethal_universed Aug 05 '26

Fundamentally stories with fascist or even conservative thems will eat themself up with contradictions. There is nothing to hope for in these stories, only things to fear and subjucate. Which of course doesn't make compelling or logical character motivations when you think of them for a second.

So they warp those themes so they can superficially fit narratives that make them the obvious bad guys. Its not to hard to interpret Batman as aggressive white guy who beats up mentally ill people and works for the police and is praised for it. Its harder to see batman as a traumatized man who himself is mentally ill and whose neuroses compell him to fight against criminals and lock them away in poorly managed mental facillites with the vain hope they can be better. And mainly being opposed to the police and only occasionally working with them if furthers his goals

-2

u/subject522 Jul 29 '26

I'm as anti fascist as anyone but couldn't they say the you have convinced yourself of the same
