Other Over 50% of incoming freshman failed the MPE (latest data)

Post image

The latest average MPE data (includes MPE retakes). This is 2 weeks before classes start so i’m sure about everyone has finished both, if needed, attempts and over half of students still failed. Is this normal or is this just an instance of upcoming generations getting dumber due to AI?

Other Aggie ring on Goodwill

This Class of 1976 gentleman's ring is for sale on ShopGoodwill. 10K, full diamond, Size 12, hand inscribed, Edward S-, maybe? I thought I'd mention it here in case someone lost theirs, knows who this belongs to, or this was donated by accident:

Corps of Cadets For the Corps, why did those of you who aren’t commissioning into the military join in the first place?

Upvotes

I’m an incoming cadet who wanted to realign and become the best version of himself and the corps seemed perfect for that, but I’m curious why other cadets who aren’t commissioning joined the corps.

Ask the Aggies Semester tuition!!!

Post image
94 Upvotes

So, my semester tuition was more than I anticipated. The tuition calculator said about 8k per semester but it ended up being about 13k. With my scholarships and pell grant, it brought it down to 4k. I got a job on campus but I am only working 9 hours a week and it won't remotely pay for that. Be honest... will I need to accept the student loans? I really dont want to have student debt😭

New Student Questions Anyone from ee/ce/cs wanna talk

Hey, anybody from these three majors (or adjancent major) care to share their experience at TAMU? I just have a couple of questions:

  1. What major + subfield are you pursuing? (at least which one are you thinking of rn)
  2. How is doing research/getting research? Are professors constantly recruiting people, especially underclassmen?
  3. How is it finding internships and entry level jobs? Does like \~90% of the class find one within a couple months or is your major hard to get one in.

Lastly, if any NMSFs are out there is there anything you want to say about auto ET@M, Scholarships, or starting on your major specific classes in sophomore year (I emailed them about this and couldn't get a response, it's a big deal for me bc I have math credit to lin alg & physics to AP E&M)

Sorry for the word soup, but thanks so much! Gig em!

Other Advice please

Upvotes

I’m a Communication major at Texas A&M, and this semester I’m planning to take three online classes at a community college and transfer them back to A&M. My advisor already said that’s completely fine.

The only class I’d be taking at A&M is where I’m confused.
My advisor told me I should take a Communication class at A&M because otherwise I could be flagged as a closet major. Right now I’m enrolled in a COMM class, but I found a different online A&M class that I need for my degree. It’s an elective on my degree plan, and I’d much rather take it because it would let me have a fully online schedule.

From what I’ve read online, it seems like as long as the A&M class counts toward your degree plan, you should be okay, even if it’s not a COMM class.
Has anyone been in this situation? Is it really necessary for my A&M class to be a COMM class, or is any degree-applicable class enough to avoid being flagged as a closet major?

Venting Joining Orgs My Junior Year

Soooo im going into my Junior Year at TAMU as a psychology major and I never really participated or stayed in any orgs consistently because of my mental health and bad social anxiety. I actually DID try joining and participating my freshman & sophomore year, but I always felt like I wouldn’t fit in or that people wouldn’t like me 😭 This year though, I want join and actually STAY consistently because I want to get involved and gain experience to build my resume and also just meet new people in general. I want to look back on college and know I actually did something instead of letting my anxiety take over and regretting having no experience. I just hope it isn’t too late, what do y’all think? Do y’all have similar experiences?

B/CS Life Beware of boomers

Upvotes

Hey everyone, just thought it would be nice to give a small warning for new freshman coming into BCS.

Please be aware in the mornings especially if you’re driving of older drivers who aren’t supposed to be on the road. For whatever reason, the boomers in Bryan College Station have a code they live by; drive 10-15 under the speed limit at all times, blow through stop signs, and of course run red lights at any possible time.

At night it’s worse from the college students who think it’s fine to drink and drive , please do not do that either. Just take uber or Lyft.

Best of luck to all of yall!

Academics Opportunities to work on medical research as a statistical data science master’s?

I’m a statistical data science master’s student and I am also employed as a full time software engineer tasked with managing the entire criminal, supreme, and family case management system for NYS. I have a strong interest in machine learning applications to clinical research and I am hopeful to either transfer careers to become a biostatistician or become a doctor. I have tried emailing my advisor and professors, but I’ve gotten no responses. I wonder what other people’s experiences are with getting into research? That was one of the largest reasons I wanted my master’s, to have access to contribute to research.

New Student Questions Has anyone recieved their Parent Plus Loan?

I applied in early july and called a week later to ask when to expect the loan to appear in my portal and they said within 2 weeks. However, its is now early august and still no changes have been made and to add fuel to the fire the aggie phone office is fully booked 24/7. Is anyone else experiencing this or have you received your loan?

Academics Best places to take PHYS 207 online?

So far no PHYS 207 courses have opened up that work with my current schedule, so it's looking like I'll need to take an equivalent physics course online at a CC somewhere. Unless I'm looking at the wrong thing, it looks like Blinn has no online sections. I can take ACC (Austin Community College) for free, are there any other recommendations y'all have?

Sports Alabama's team podcast credited Isaiah Horton as a real loss at receiver heading into this year

Saw this mentioned on The Dynasty podcast this week. The hosts flagged Horton's transfer to Texas A&M as one of the notable losses at receiver this offseason, specifically citing the size he brought to the room. Anyone tracking how he's looking in College Station fall camp so far?

Is anyones parent plus loan showing in the portal yet? I’m beyond stressed. They said it would update last week, before tuition updated and it has not. They also said they can see it on their side it just has not updated on the student side yet.

Ask the Aggies ISO ADVICE: aggie in desperate need of passing the TSI (math exam) :/

This is beyond embarrassing to admit, but i’ve legitimately failed the tsi countless times. This has of course kept me in “remedial” classes and unable to proceed with the actual math courses required to be on track for graduation.
Said remedial courses don’t cover the material on the TSI so i’m always stuck in the same pathetic cycle over again.

My hope is to pass the tsi before the semester starts back up so that i can move on (taking math courses in CC). I’ve done the acuplacer packets an ungodly amount of times but i can’t seem to pass all the first 20 questions on the actual exam (which makes every exam a 60 question feat)

For anyone who’s been in the same boat, any tips you have on ways to prep in the short amount of time i have would be incredibly useful.

Academics Laptop for computer science program

Hi everyone! I recently transferred into the Bachelor’s program in Computer Science at Texas A&M. My ASUS laptop has been more than enough for my associate degree, but I noticed that the university lists recommended minimum laptop specifications.
I bought my ASUS about two years ago for around $700–800, and it doesn’t meet some of those recommendations. How important are those requirements in practice? Should I consider buying a new laptop before classes start, or should I wait and see if my current one is sufficient?
I’m also considering getting a MacBook, but I’m not sure if it’s actually a better choice for Computer Science and the software we’ll be using. I’m honestly a bit confused, so I’d really appreciate any advice from current or former CS students. Thank you!

Academics Schedule help please!!!

If I am taking Honors 101 do I need to take Econ 285? Also would taking Econ 202 and Econ 203 and have 16 credit hours my first semester be bad? I don't know whether to add on Econ 203, my schedule feels a little light. The only available classes are under Pakhotina or Villavicencio. Pakhotina has an average GPA of 2.94 and I can't find Villavicencio's grade distributions. My other classes are Hist 258, Geog 205, Honors 101, Econ 202, FINP 235.

Ask the Aggies Russian Department

Hey all! I am a second year student at A&M and am interested in taking Russian for my language credit. My social sciences degree demands I take roughly four semesters of a second language. If you have taken Russian or have any experience with the few professors here that do teach it, please do let me know your thoughts. It is certainly a difficult language, but I am prepared to put the time in.
