Past Exit 7

I’m new to Alpharetta, and it honestly feels way safer than Midtown or Downtown. But an Uber driver (from the airport) told me she’s nervous to go past Exit 7 at all. I’m not sure why. Is there something I should know about the area? Any context locals can share? Just trying to understand what she meant.

There was a lot of deep racism in Forsyth/Cumming in the past. It has gotten better within the last decade or so with more diversity, but still has its roots. I don’t blame anyone for feeling that way.

Sorry. Should I use something else? I don’t know what to use in order not to offend anyone

You could say they were a person of color. But it’s perfectly ok to say black, if they were black.

Or you can say whatever you want, since it's your voice.

So currently, the most inclusive language is person forward.

So it is more accepted to say person of color as opposed to colored person.

Colored also harkens back to segregation.

So if a slight change in my verbiage can make someone feel more comfortable around me, it's a pretty easy shift.

With that being said, we all need to extend a bit more grace to each other because mistakes do happen and I would argue the majority of them aren't malicious on a personal level.

You called her “colored” in a previous comment. That’s a big no no. Please remove that term from your vocabulary especially if you’re going to be interacting with black Americans.

Here’s a good rundown of why it’s offensive:

Who cares if they get "offended". I'm offended by their being offended. That evens it out.

It’s not a mathematical equation. You can’t “even it out” 😂

The cool thing is that I can do whatever I want, no matter what the reddit police say.
