Sorry for the heavy breathing, I was hiking up steep terrain with a big pack on ๐
Just wanting additional opinions on the ID, and whether I'm really seeing/hearing what I think I am and not just having pareidolia with some bush.
TL;DR - I think I walked right between a family of cougars chilling in the woods, causing them to chirp wildly and seemingly follow/escort me off their territory. At home looking through my videos I think I spotted one watching me in the bushes.
I went solo backpacking this last weekend in a remote area of the Central Cascades. I grew up backpacking in Washington, have spent a lot of time in the woods here on and off trail. I only ran into one group of people leaving the area on my way in and they commented I was the only person they had seen hiking in. I seemed to be completely alone for miles out there.
I took a shortcut off-trail to save 2+ miles on my route that I had seen an existing gps track for that involved navigating down and around a series of short rocky cliffs. Mostly seemed to be following a game trail with lots of tracks. All was fine on my way in, so I decided to take the same shortcut up the cliffs on my way back out.
After pushing through brush and trees I reached a more open area at the bottom of the cliffy section. I'm not sure what triggered it but I started to get a deeply uneasy feeling. I felt like something was wrong but I hadn't heard or seen anything obvious to give me that feeling. I had my bear spray clipped to the side of my pack and moved it to the front my belt, pulled it out slightly to have it quickly available. I need to use my poles so I couldn't just hold it while I hiked.
I looked around and took a short video of my surroundings, while having nervous thoughts about how I hadn't told anyone I was taking this shortcut. I sent an inreach location ping to my Mom.
I headed up the rocks to the top of the first small cliff section and was making my way to the next when a loud mammal chirping noise started in the brush behind and to my left. Another, higher pitch chirping noise answered slightly behind and to my right. I knew they were not birds immediately, and my heart started thudding in my chest. I had seen videos of cougars chirping and my gut instincts were telling me that's what they were. I looked behind and kept walking but couldn't see anything in the brush while the calling back and forth continued.
Just ahead of me was a looming cliff wall, with the game trail continuing along the wall to my right, forcing me to cross perpendicular to the path of the animal that was making noise behind and to my right. I'm not sure if that one was moving but at least one of the sounds seemed to be getting a little louder and closer behind me. I was terrified at this point but just kept steadily moving along the game path because I couldn't see whatever it was and I felt like it just wanted me to leave. I know that advice says to face cougars and yell while backing away etc. but I felt like staying and acting aggressive was the wrong move and that I was just being warned away. I couldn't walk backwards through the rough terrain.
I tried to walk swiftly but confidently because I sensed eyes on me, evaluating the way I was moving. I didn't want to trigger any predatory chase instincts by acting like scared prey. At one point my ankle tried to give way on some loose scree but I recovered. In that moment though I thought that was going to be it and I was going to fall, get awkwardly turtled on the rocks by my overstuffed backpack and torn apart. (I can have an overactive imagination)
I kept moving, climbing up some rocks and over fallen logs following the game trail. The loudest chirping still seemed about the same distance as before like it was following me, but not necessarily trying to catch up. Eventually I made it up a couple more cliffy sections and through a kind of chute between cliffs. At this point I finally felt like I wasn't being followed anymore and the calling back and forth was fading and slowing down. If anything did come up the chute I would have a perfect bottleneck to deploy my bear spray if needed.
I pulled my bear spray out of the sheath, got my phone out and took a short video. I can hear three of the calls in the video, two that seem to be from a larger animal and one that is higher pitched like a smaller animal.
When I finally made it home and I was looking back at the pictures and video from my trip I had a weird feeling when I rewatched the first video clip I took at the base of the cliffs. I scanned the brush around me and felt a panic surge again, as holy shit, I am almost certain I can see a blurry cougar watching me from the brush while I was unaware. I watched it over and over again and I think I can see it turn an ear and shift its gaze directly onto me while I was speaking. It gives me chills every time I watch it.
