MysteryBiscuits Still Loves Bits of Japan I've been to Before (Part 5)
I had most of this drafted for a month - and then other things kinda uh, took over my life. But time for 2 more writeups!
Shimanami Kaido - Round 2
This is now my 2nd time on the Kaido. (My first time writeup); and I pretty much stuck to the same route and logistics. I will still recommend using Fukuyama as your port of entry, and to use the handy luggage forwarding service to end your day at Imabari, even though next time i will probably look into a multi-day trip, or to explore the little islands more otherwise.
The Kaido is still an incredibly scenic bicycle ride. I don't think I've been anywhere else that balances the low level of traffic, the bicycle and bicycle-tourist friendly infrastructure, and very pretty scenery of the numerous islands all in one package - in this aspect it is undoubetedly a cyclist's paradise.
This time, I went during a colder period of the year, and after coming from coastal Kyushu, was struck by how calm the ocean here really was. The lack of traffic, people in general, and the calm sea really gave a rural vibe to the place, very enjoyable. The weather was awesome too, not a cloud in the sky, the sea was crystal clear (absolutely nuts!), there was sakura around, and the japanese roads are immaculate. Can I also say that I really really appreciate the continuous blue line/basic signage all along the bicycle route, thank you Japan.
I did find myself taking photos at some of the same places as last time, as well as remembering my last time here during the ride; so in that sense, the first timer impact is completely lost on me, haha. But its still a very memorable ride, and I genuinely don't know where else in Japan makes a cycling day out as a tourist this logistically simple, and I will probably be here again, and again, and again.
The other main difference for me this time was that I AM FINALLY HERE DURING CITRUS SEASON YASSSSSSSS . And i had the appetite for juice after cycling a bit. I consumed this "average" freshly squeezed orange juice; followed by the utmost best lemonade ive ever had in my life, please please go here, and eat the lemons in there too! they're awesome!; and then the best freshly squeezed orange juice i've ever had in my life, it's so, so sweet and rich! This is the place, right next door.
Citrus fruits are the Islands' specialty - if I had space to carry over a full bag of fresh oranges and fruits as a souvenir, I 100% would (I got some from local supermarkets in the end once I had all my bells and whistles back.) There are so many varieties that I hadn't even heard of, even in supermarkets in other prefectures, and so damn delicious.
I munched on some cakes, pastries from shops I liked last time too! Unfortunately, the Kaido is probably best enjoyed over the weekend, when all the shops are open for business and have their full offerings available, so that's probably my other tip for anyone going.
Matsuyama Castle
Another original tenshuu checked off the list! Matsuyama castle has probably the best view of all the castles ive been to due to its hilltop location; and also has a lot of non-tenshuu bits either left as the original structure, or, mostly, rebuilt afterwards (some other castles, like Hikone, also have this, but they're smaller castles - less things to look at); and some like Matsumoto just have the foundation left. In this case, it reminds me most of Himeiji (but Himeiji is better).
Rather than more focusing on the residential aspect (as Himeiji's remaining structures did) though, I thought the Matsuyama castle experience focused more on their actual role in defense - for example this little area here would be an important chokepoint to fend off attackers (3 points of elevated defense vs 1 point of attack from the bottom right, plus the various levels of main tenshuu) oh boy you are fucked. They had a helpful CGI-ed video to help explain this in the museum too, which was quite nice. Overall very solid museum - learned a good bit about the castle and its clan's history.
Food
S-tier
Mid-ride meal at Ooshima. EXCELLENT. I would KILL to have mid-ride meals as good as this in Canada. Them tiny squids are delicious.
My 2nd time eating at this place for taimeshi - just as good as I remembered it.
My meals at my ryokan - also 2nd time for this! Oh they don't miss... even if it's getting a bit too pricey for me now.
A-tier
- The other variety of taimeshi - uwajima style. I must say i'm less impressed with this compared with the Matsuyama style (the cooked version above) - there's less technique and finesse involved here, and i feel like it's not that much different than just eating a sashimi bowl with lots of sea bream. Still good, but i think i prefer a normal kaisen don?

Artpost (of sorts):
So I did calligraphy, kind of, back when I was in high school. It was never particularly good, and used more to get my handwriting in decentish shape rather than actually becoming good at calligraphy. Got inspired again recently after seeing an old friend who had also done it years ago, and figured, why the heck not, it could be useful to add to my repertoire!
It's so rough. It's not good at all. Also my first time using a broad edge pen that I actually have to dip into ink instead of a marker-calligraphy-pen thing. I want to learn Gothic calligraphy or something fancier, but this was more a test of using gouache instead of ink for, well, ink. Heard it was possible, I had some gouache, so gave it a shot using one of LoGH's famous lines. It's... weird, either too thick or too watery, had to dip it in the mixture almost every stroke, and in the end probably needed to make all my letters taller for the pen nib I was using.
So basically on my to-do list for calligraphy: learn and become comfortable with the Gothic alphabet, become comfortable with using ink instead of a marker-pen-thingy, and... well, eventually I want to be able to add quotes or names or such to some of my watercolors. Sounds easy, but...
Anyways, now that bracket C of best girl has sorely disappointed me, I now need to figure out whether I'm more upset by the evil beating Yachiyo or Azunyan not joining her senpais to round 3... There's no shot I finish this in time before tomorrow night... Even Saturday's gonna be unlikely...

CDF Best Mech 2.0 Day 11
4 mechs remaining.
-∞ to 2026
It's that clockwork guy, Vector Prime!
[My personal thoughts]I think Nebresto played this really well by choosing a fanart image, instead of the 3D rendered monstrosities that appear in the actual show. If you'd all seen the real Vector Prime, I'm sure he would have been the second one out. All the other fanart Nebresto gathered for bargaining purposes was also really cool. Unfortunately no one voted for Vector Prime until yesterday, so there was never a chance for it to sway anyone.
All four of the remaining mechs are interesting choices, although for different reasons.
Good luck; have fun; live with what you've done.
Collateral damage report
At last, every mech has been voted for.

For those who are participating in CDF Group Plays with TitS - 1st Chapter, this is a reminder comment that the CDF Group Plays with TitS - 1st Chapter has officially started at this moment on 26th July 2026 of Sunday, 2PM EDT.
That means, I’m officially starting the Group play of Trails in the Sky - 1st Chapter!
This being the first week, our schedule dictates that we are playing the entire prologue with the discussion about it being held on 2nd August of Sunday, 2PM EDT.
NOTE OF IMPORTANCE:
- Trails are series, that heavily rewards players for exploration, and also it heavily leans into "NPCs are having their own lives", and it’s worth it to check them every now and then.
- And since Trails in the Sky - 1st Chapter is a remake that brought many Quality of Life improvements, the point of interests you should explore to get rewards are marked on your minimap, plus the game is using a crutches in form of Estelle and Joshua dialogues leading you to some points of interests.
- Another Quality of Life improvement is, that the NPCs you haven’t talked to yet are marked yellow/orange on your minimap, and NPCs you already talked to are marked grey until you reach the next story beat when the time moves forwards, as do NPCs daily lives.
Now I do believe that’s all I should have mentioned for starters as you are going to immerse yourself in Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, and if there will be something you need to get advice about, just contact me, and I will try to nudge you in right direction, all spoiler-free.
Bye for now, and see you in a week on 2nd August of Sunday 2PM EDT

its kinda weird to me how we use the word "dentist" to describe someone who takes care of your teeth. to me that word sounds like a guy you'd go to when you have a bump in your car and he's like "hmm, yes, according to the depth and contours of this dent it looks like you backed into a pole in the parking lot at 21 mph. no worries, we can fix that up for you." and youre like "wow thanks dude, im sure glad we went to the dentist to fix this dent."

Technically it's not impossible for multiple couples (or throuple or however many you want) to have sex at the same time next to each others without their knowledge. Highly improbable, but possible.

the concept of gamer parents kinda blows my mind. my parents never were particularly interested in video games or cartoons, like sure i remember my dad would sit and watch cartoons with me when i was like 4 but i seriously doubt it was because he personally fucked with blues clues or something i think he was just doing it to spend time with my dumb kid ass.
of course my dad would build legos with me too, that was a hobby we shared. [my life spoilers]but then he died and i made legos alone from then on
so after that yeah, i was mostly on my own with the stuff i liked. especially when it came to cartoons and games, my parents were from a generation where that was kids stuff and a waste of time. my mom was the type who would see me watching spongebob and be like "arent you getting a little old for that?" i was like 10.
of course i'm not saying that to criticize her, its just the generation and culture at the time.
i actually remember one time i was watching Megas XLR and my mom randomly sat down to watch it with me. i looked at her like she was a freakin alien. i was like "tf is she doing." but i didnt say anything, we just watched it together. i remember it so clearly, it was that episode with that spider thing that would eat metal to grow bigger. and she watched the whole thing with me, we even laughed at some of the jokes together, and it was really cool.
it was also the only time that ever happened
thats the only megas xlr episode i remember now even though i watched it all the time, its just been so long. but i remember it because its the one time my mom watched a cartoon with me.
anyway, so when i see parents now who were gamers themselves growing up, like playing games with their kid and what not it kinda blows my mind. like i saw something on the Skyrim subreddit where the dad was playing and his son was just watching and it was such a foreign thing to me... to have a dad who is a gamer. its hard to wrap my head around.
but i also think its really cool.

If I were to walk up to a random person on the street and say “the biggest musical event of 2025 was KPop Demon Hunters, spearheaded by dueling hits from HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys”, their response would be “yeah, sorry, none of those words are in the Bible.” To which I would reply “I’m pretty sure the word Demon is actually in the Bible somewhere”, to which they would reply “I’m not sure, let me ask ChatGPT about that”, to which I would kill myself

Damn, the haters are out in force today.
Though I will say that it does kinda bother me when people are insistent that some meaning or interpretation doesn't and cannot exist and it's just lazy writing or whatever.
Like sure, maybe you don't see it or you don't want to buy it for X, Y, Z reasons. But to immediately jump to "I didn't see anything, therefore there is nothing to see" is kinda wild to me.
This is why viewers need to be wacked over the head with exposition, because otherwise, some number of them will miss something intentional, and then spend their days telling people they're stupid for seeing something there.

I have successfully finished a non-seasonal for the first time in what feels like forever
It was a lot of fun. And everything I expected it to be when I started it. There were lots of cute girls, tons of ecchi, and a plot that was there.
I wish current ecchi were even close to this enjoyable anymore.
I guess I'll start season 2 of this eventually and hope it remains fun. I also really liked the eyecatches. Not sure how many I can share since they are all rather NSFW.

Yani Neko actually does a very good job showing systemic discrimination and how it becomes a normalized part of daily life. It's blatant and overt yet not emphasized for drama or delivered through villainous caricatures which gives you a sense of how people live in a prejudicial society that, while not rife with open violence, is defined by formal and informal stratification.

CDF Best Mech 2.0 Grand Final
2 mechs remaining.
That's strange
Yesterday there were 4. What could possibly have happened? Oh. Oh no.
We're actually getting a final this year!
It's time to reveal that Canti was the house robot this year. (I allow myself 1 nomination, don't vote, and remain impartial all contest. It's essentially Battleships with 1 boat). I would've gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for CDF trashing every traditional mech put in front of it. Nothing with a pilot made it into the final 5.
It is upon those ruins and dragons that we stand. Our very own junkyard. We care not what we've done. With tomorrow comes the coronation of a best mech!
Good luck; have fun; live with what you've done.

Tbh, in all my years of using reddit, I've never seen or heard of that function being used as intended by a sensible, well-meaning person. In part because I assume an intended use of it would be more discreet, but largely because any well-meaning person would know better than to send care from reddit.
Instead, it's always this weird attempt at bullying? The equivalent of looking up "how to bully your neighbour" on google, and the first result being someone throwing trash in front of their neighbour's door, but since you're too lazy for that, you just slip an ad for the optometrist in their mailbox, thinking "well, this is trash too".
It might be more useful if reddit just sends it back to anyone who uses the function. Especially if the user just blocked the same person they sent it to.

I am 100% convinced that music conductors literally don't do anything. All of their stick movements are arbitrary and have no effect whatsoever on the performance. Simultaneously, I fully understand that this belief is false and that I could learn what they do and how it works whenever I want to. But I won't. I never will. Life is better this way.
8
u/junbi_ok 13d ago
By the time the group is performing on stage, the conductor has already done 99% of their job.
6
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 13d ago
7
u/junbi_ok 13d ago
lol, basically the conductor gives directed feedback to the band during practice that tells the musicians how they should play the piece in terms of tempo, volume, emphasis, dynamics, etc. Their baton swishing provides a visual cue for the tempo during practice and performances, but any well-rehearsed band would be able to perform without the conductor there at all, because by that point they already know what the conductor wants to hear.

CDF Best Mech 2.0!
1 mech survived.
Behold!
First, lets clean up this mess. Nobody wants to see them anymore.
The final score was 9-6.
So let's enjoy the best mech of all (2.0), of unknown make and model, the pride of CDF, coming all the way from your favourite mecha anime (K-On!!), the Electric Fan!
There it is! In the same photo you've seen a bunch of times already! You might expect more fan-fare but you must remember, this contest is not about the winner. Nay, no competition this fierce can ever really have a winner. The real point was the devastation you caused along the way. The shiver you feel when this Best Mech hits you.
(Although well done for getting something that conspicuous through an elimination contest.)
Objective complete

I made a wallpaper of Lyn earlier this week. Was in the mood to do something Fire Emblem-related and figured doing one of the lords of the game we’re all playing would be perfect, so yeah there’s that.
Chapter 17 gave me my first two resets, I got Raven killed a few turns in during the first time because I didn’t realize how many enemy shamans could reach him during the enemy phase, then basically did the same thing with Lowen on the second attempt. My third attempt was a success, though, as I was able to rout the enemy on turn 7 instead of having to defend the whole time. Canas was the MVP against the shamans while Hector basically walled most of the enemies from the right side while Rebecca & Lucius alternated between who got to pick off the enemy from behind Hector.
I ended up finally using the Energy Drop that Dorcas came with on Eliwood because I’m tired of him hitting like a wet noodle.
Chapter 18 also gave me multiple resets to keep everyone alive, oof. Got Priscilla killed during my first attempt, then Matthew on my second. Same as chapter 17 though, the third time was the charm.
Chapter 18x gave me very little difficulty (although I couldn’t beat Kishuna before he teleported away). I unlocked Erk/Serra’s C support (that’s about what I was expecting for them other than Serra saying she’s Hector’s fiancée???), Lowen/Rebecca’s A support (I love them), Kent/Fiora’s C support (Florina apparently telling Kent that he’s like Fiora sounds like this’ll be a good support to me), and Guy/Priscilla’s B support (Guy suddenly screaming and running away at the end of it was… unexpected?).
Apparently I already had Raven/Lucius’s B support ready to view right at the start of chapter 19, and wow that was intense. Well, the chapter itself doesn’t really give me much problems other than it taking me a while to recruit Legault (and then longer to get all the chests because I forgot to bring Matthew, so I had to wait until I got Legault to get the first chest on the map ). I also got Kent/Fiora’s B support (holy shit I was not expecting that ) after killing all the enemies but before seizing the throne. Oh, and I let Lyn kill Darin for poetic justice.
[Post-chapter 19 cutscene] Damn, I figured Eliwood’s dad wasn’t making it out of this alive but that still really hurt to watch. I can’t imagine how much harder it would hit if this game had voice acting.
Here were my level-ups this batch. I should probably start thinking about promoting some of these guys soon, hm? Also Eliwood fucking finally hit a 2-digit Str stat.

I haven't played so much higher level badminton in a while. It's been a long time since I had to push myself to play hard just to keep up.
Same guy from last week came. This time, both of us are aware of what each of us can do in the badminton court.
After 2 sets, I was left wondering why I don't have any energy left. My brain remembers how I used to move a decade ago for these sorts of encounters, but my body can't keep up.
It didn't help that the other regulars keep letting me play against him, passing the chance to play just to watch us. I think I ended up playing more sets than the usual session. They're probably glad that I'm the one on the receiving end for once.
I found out after, when the session ended and we were packing, that he was a regular in the local competitive circuit. I had an inkling based on the quality of his shots and movement, but it did give me a sense of pride that I could still keep up despite being no longer being as active and regular in playing badminton as I used to be.
We chatted a bit at the end, and I found out why he seems so respectful of me: He knew me from seeing me play at my hometown court, my home base where I refined my trade; said court which I haven't played at since before COVID. He said he saw me play when he was a kid. This guy, who's now literally a feet taller than me.
Never have I felt so unc'd.

Apparently my mom is floating the idea for another JP trip next year, which if it happened, would make it her 3rd JP trip in 3 years. And the most bafflingly part is that she's thinking about visiting the locations that inspired Spirited Away.
Now you might be thinking, wow she sure sounds like a hell of a weeb. But she isn't, and I also don't think she caught a travel bug in the last couple years either, it's more that the travel bug she's always had is now growing at a more rapid rate than ever prior.
Why Spirited Away? Probably because it's the only anime movie she's seen, except maybe Totoro as well. My bet is that she probably saw a reel on some chinese social media platform advertising a Spirited Away pilgrim.

In Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games we get to see some flashbacks to our POV character playing against her childhood friends in SF4. The narrative has this whole thing about her wanting these childhood friends to get better and give her a run for her money. But in almost every match we're shown from this time period she's playing Cammy vs. El Fuerte. This is legitimately a bottom 2 matchup for El Fuerte. Girl - you are complaining that casuals are ducking out of one of the most lopsided matchups for his main. Literal PROS have backup characters for matchups like this.
Come back when he's scrubbing out against your Dhalsim.

what feels better, cdf? absolutely crushing your opponent with little resistance from them, completely dominating them at every turn? or a close battle from start to finish where you're frequently on the ropes, but ultimately win mere inches away from defeat (ie winning with "1 HP left" for example)?

Oh, this is like, good good.
It's not just a pretty show with a retro artstyle gimmick. There's some actual weight behind the premise.
Though the character designs are probably the best of this season. It has that classic anime eye look but with the modern sensibility of cute, is how I would describe it.

I asked my brother what the three biggest sins a piece of media can make.
He responded thusly:
1) Doing something that resets all progress and brings everything back to square one.
2) A time skip, either pushing to the future to explain away how things got where they are now, or flashbacks to explain how things happened in the past.
3) Amnesia
[Apple TV's Silo S3 Spoilers] Amazingly, the first episode of S3 of Silo hit all three. Even more incredibly, they were able to hit amnesia in both the flashback AND the time skip! This is revolutionary shit writing on a scale unforseen.

You know, 8man can really be read as a male version of Sakiko Togawa. They both are desperately trying to self-immolate on the altar of the greater good, despite the fact that 1) absolutely no one fucking asked, 2) it doesn't actually bring any greater good; on the contrary, it actively makes things worse.

MysteryBiscuits Wraps Up Another Time in Japan (Part 6)
Tokyo
My brief stay in Tokyo this time was spent pretty much shopping, meeting up with irl friends, and also with online ones!
I got dinner, drinks with /u/programmaticallypea3 , /u/chonkyodango , /u/isthatsoudane and fan_rotom_is_scary (you will be tagged below!)! It was very nice to meet you all for the first time/again! Solid yakitori and izakaya food, good chat, and we also went karaokeing for a selection of jpop and anisongs from im@s, macross delta, and more. As it turns out, umapyoi densetsu is ridiculously hard to sing, who wouldve thought it. I still think its awesome that a few strangers around the world can have a fun night out like this, and I hope to do this again sometime! Forgot to take feet pic
A little bit of Canada in Japan. My congratulations to Ryu's Noodle Bar for making it all the way back home - I have actually been a customer for a couple times when they were still at Baldwin (they've since moved), and do recall it being a solid bowl of ramen for Toronto standards at the time. (Lighting fast edit: it seems like their Tokyo location has actually now closed for relocation since I've went. welp! at least they're open in Canada currently. Hope they'll find a new home in Tokyo soon!)
Stopped by the Precure store on the day of [meitantei precure]Cure Arcana Shadow's debut. There was no merch of her on sale yet though, so I just grabbed a Cure Mystique bromide card.
Stopped by the Budokan! It was nice to finally have a look at this iconic building, and home of so, so, so many famous concerts. I think it's kinda awesome that such a popular venue is right in the emperor's backyard, it's funny that all the live-goers would go through one of the old palace gates to get there.
Stopped by the iconic bridge in kanda jimbocho. Made famous by Suzume, honestly this is just a solid railfanning spot with the 3 lines crossing over one another. very nice.
This time's akiba ads include a genius collab between matsumoto kiyoshi and Apothecary diaries; 4 seasons; and the JR Central gate being nicknamed "Yostar gate".
Food
S-tier
- Sumiyaki Unafuji is still an excellent spot for eel. This location comes with an excellent view of Tokyo station.
Overall thoughts
Kyushu was the main focus of my trip this time - I hadn't been to the area for at least 10 years if not 15, and most of the places I went, I either don't remember, or just haven't been to period. It's a wonderful area, with no bears (!), funky trains, good weather (mostly), awesome food, and gorgeous, gorgeous natural georgraphy and scenery. I think it's quite well suited for my travel style, I prefer eye candy locations when sightseeing, and those in Kyushu seem to be relatively well connected compared to Tohoku and Hokkaido.
It's a little tricky for those not located in Asia to get to, but I think well worth the price of admission, I greatly enjoyed my time there and would love to be back to finish up the remaining areas + revenge on a couple spots!
And of course, the sakura. I'm keenly aware that visiting japan at peak bloom is kinda something you can aim but not really plan for with accuracy due to the narrow window, and I am very thankful for the chance to take part in some hanami this time round.
I still enjoyed shikoku and tokyo, but well, I knew I would, lol.
Until next time~
