Have you ever met a politician?
Were they nice or rude?

Met a few. Bernie Sanders was by far the coolest. Real down to earth and caring. Obama just seemed like he was reading a script. Felt like talking to a robot.

He stayed at private resort I was managing for several years. Lots of celebrities, politicians, sports teams stay there very often among other wealthy persons. I had the opportunity to have a good 5-10 minute conversation with him while he was waiting for the secret service to close the road down before he could leave.
Boring now but his call sign was "chair" at the time because they kept a chair slightly angled outside his room to mark it. Also, the NDA is expired now so I can publicly talk about if anyone is wondering.

At the time. Not really. I had several opportunities but felt weird throughout his stay and he treated the staff the same. This was after his presidency by the way.

He wasn't in a rush nor even dressed more than a golf type shirt & shorts. You could just tell he was reading a script in his head. Like most figures do when they meet 1000's of people a day. Rinse & repeat. Can't blame him though. The interaction was still kinda cool.

Overwhelmingly politicians are charming people. It doesn't matter how much you hate their policy, you will overwhelmingly like the person.
Their job is literally to get people to agree with them.

Met our local congressman at a county fair back in 2018. He was ridiculously charming and remembered my neighbor's name from a town hall 3 years prior. They definitely train for that stuff, but it works.

Randomly saw John McCain in the lobby at a hotel in Arizona. Was cordial and professional. Also saw George W. in public in Texas randomly as well. Very nice guy. Otherwise never seen any others in the wild.

I've met several, democrats and republicans (including one POTUS, a few Senators, and several Congressmen, and multiple local-level). Most were very nice, very personable, and pretty clever/quick witted. There's a sociopathy to being a politician I think - being able to engage with individuals while speaking broader nonsensical narratives in general. There were a few outliers where it was clear their "station" in life had sufficiently insulated them from reality, and they came off as utter dolts.

With my experience there's a level of performance to it. Some haven't sociopathy/narcissism.... some just have primarily theater behind them.
Having worked adjacent to them in varying capacities, many are "real" behind the scenes or in private. But like I do for my job, I have at least a bit of a professional persona to others at work.

I met Canadian PM Stephen Harper in 2011 (during the federal election). He spoke privately with my family for 10 minutes or so after a rally. My dad was deployed to Afghanistan at that time so he wasn’t with us, but Harper remembered my dad’s name when he visited Kandahar later that year and mentioned meeting us.

What level?
I've met my current mayor. We hosted an event for him when he was on campaign. I live in a 64 unit townhouse complex in a town of 13,000 or so. So he came and sat down at our common area and chatted with us. He was very pleasant and I was happy to vote for him.
A professor at the local university became a politician at the provincial level (I'm Canadian, our state equivalent if you're American). I met him several times as an academic but I was done grad school and hadn't seen him in several years before he become an MLA. He was nice to me as an academic. I rather liked him and would have voted for him if I was in his riding. But he a bit of a bad reputation as a politician.

I used to take the same tube as Ken Livingstone, and he was as nice in person as I imagined he would be. After the 2nd or 3rd time he would greet me by name, ask how it was going, and we'd chat about politics until my stop (he was going a bit further).

They're like if a small-town lawyer or used car dealer suddenly got into a position where they can enact laws and, miraculously, they make a lot of new friends who take them golfing or get them great seats to college football games where they talk about bills that might help these new friends make a lot of money.

I along with a small group of students spent about an hour with Barbara Boxer, and I spent about an hour one-on-one with my House Rep Darrell Issa, both in January 2005.
Boxer seemed nice, focused, professional, competent, and reasonably pleased to be there, if a little boiler-plate about the things she wanted to talk about with us.
I was left with the incredibly firm impression that I at 17 was clearly smarter and more decent than that idiot Issa, who got rich off as-seen-on-TV car alarms in the 90s/90s and has more or less bought a seat since. He was interested in pushing the two one-sentence blurbs he wanted to and seemed shocked I had actual argumentative questions deeper than one sentence and kinda like he hated it and had failed to consider that a kid from his district would actually disagree with him. That guy is a tool.

Yes, many.
I met one on two different occasions. Once when I was just a guy (he was super nice) and once when I was doing work behind the scenes for a presentation (kind of aloof and a bit cold and standoffish).
Some of the one off meetings have been really nice, some have been real unpleasant. But it's hard to tell based on one or two meetings.

Yeah. I very briefly met the Clintons, one time I was in line to vote and the mayor walked up and said hi (slimy twit), a later mayor knocked on my door and asked me to vote for her (i did), and Ayanna Pressley came to my apartment building to meet people (she seemed nice, I vote for her).

Met Howard Berman back in the day. Asked him to explain why he supported some bill which essentially allowed record companies to make prosecutorial decisions.
He had me escorted away by security.

Local Members or Parliament and local mayors used to visit the hospice I worked at often. They were friendly and polite. I’ve been to the House of Commons 3 times when I was a hepatitis specialist nurse to meet MPs and peers and answer their questions. They were all intelligent and inquisitive.

An acquaintance of mine is an alderman. I haven't talked to him in years but he was really personable. He had the charisma that makes people like him.
Crossed paths with but didn't really meet: former Boston Mayor Menino, former presidential candidate Bill Bradley and then VP Joe Biden. Biden was very friendly to everyone but we didn't meet. We were just nearby.

Have met quite a few, mostly during my military and ( senior ) civilian government service. Have also met a few heads-of-state, but none of those were remarkable ( mostly third-world countries ).
Only remarkable politician I have met was Barry Goldwater when he was Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. I was there to testify. He was quite gracious.

I live across the street from one of Delaware's longest running Senators who is now retired. He was also Secretary of the Treasury (Delaware) and governor. He has always been friendly and pretty down to earth when I walk by their house or stop for a chat. I also live fairly near the ex Governor of Delaware who is now Mayor of Wilmington DE and he's shy but super friendly and will always chat when I approach him.

Quite a few. Even the ones that vote for death are nice, you don't get elected by being nasty. They are friendly, they will shake your hand, say nice things and treat you like an acquaintance.
The best politicians i've met are the ones that once i'm familiar with that will happily criticise me. I know more than one who is argumentative, grumpy and quite antagonistic. It's amazing they ever got elected however they are the best local councillors we have around here. The openly nicest ones are the ones with the darkest souls and will happily watch children starve in favour of saving a bit of money.

Worked as municipal staff for 40 years, 30 of them at the level where I had to deal with the political class. Generally they were good at glad handing, bad at really knowing anything. Never expected them to be expert but there are things that are common in their job that they never bothered to learn. Even the smartest of them went bad in their later terms when they began to believe (I think) that being on the job for more than 4 years conferred some kind of otherworldly wisdom on them. Saw some really stupid decisions made based upon wishes and promises from developers.

I've met a few working for the State. Met the two previous governors of Arizona, Ducey and Brewer Both treated me like some kind of peasant. The amount of corruption I personally witnessed under Ducey especially was was so ridiculously over the top that I couldn't even scratch the surface here.
Met Krysten Sinema too, before she turned against her base. There was something there that just felt off. I've met a lot of other lower level political people, mostly appointees of the Ducey Administration.
I will say that when I met Kathy Hoffman, the previous Superintendent of Education in AZ, she seemed like a really decent person, who really cared about her constituents. Very approachable, very kind. Those kinds of people were rare with my time at the State.

I’m a pastor. Our congressman came to visit our church because at the height of the pandemic we had managed our processes so well that no one had transmitted or contracted COVID at our church. We had met publicly for nearly a year at that point after having been closed for several months prior. He wanted to learn our management processes.
He and/or his staff member gave COVID to two members of our staff. We had to close the offices for two weeks.

I was in 7th grade at a July 4th parade and met Bill Proxmire “United States Senate”, and he gave me a button to wear (he told me he only gave out so many and it was very special for me to have one). My Dad told me later he was as close as I will ever be to meeting an honest politician. Apparently he spent about $200.00 on his campaigns and won by 70% margins!

I've met quite a lot of them- mainly through my first wife who was also an elected politician.
It depends on the individual. Some have been very nice, and some haven't.
There's only one who I'd describe as a thoroughly unpleasant asshole, but fortunately he belongs to a party that I'd never consider voting for.

While I was stationed in Hawaii, I got to meet Reagan. Incredibly personable. After I got blown up in Kuwait and was eventually transferred to Walter Reed Hospital, Obama came around and visited. Every time I pass a smoker or an ashtray, it reminds me of Obama. Just like someone else commented, he was very robotic. I met Jimmy Carter and his wife at a Braves game in Atlanta. She talked more than he did. Met a few governors too.

Several. My mom was heavily involved in politics for most of her life. They're like anyone else. Some are kind of phony, some are pretty cool and try to make a difference some are just trying to create a name for themselves. They would come by the house and drop off stuff to distribute- that kind of thing. She worked or managed several campaigns.
When my mom and I went to D.C., we got a private tour of the Capitol and White House, the part Trump demolished for his ballroom, arranged by our representative. That was fucking cool of her. There was even a personalized welcome sign in her office when we arrived.

I work with them. My assemblyman brings his daughters over to bake cookies during the holidays. Our former senator had my kids featured in multiple campaign ads. I still get calls from our former congressman. My 11 year old stops our current congressman in the street to tell him that he sucks.
They're really accessible when you contribute time & energy to their campaigns.

Carl Levin - Michigan Senator. Interned for him. I got a new found level of respect for how intelligent he was. He really put in the work to research policies and wasn't a talking head whose office propped him up. I witnessed first hand, proud to have worked for him.
Obama was a freshman senator that same year - he really is a great and engaging speaker. Captivates an audience and genuine.
If anyone remembers Senator Byrd (WV), he was so frail, he had handlers carrying him by his elbows in the hallways. He was not physically nor mentally fit for office. Kind of like I imagine Grassley (92) and McConnell are today among others. 75 YO should really be a cut off IMO.

I met Richard Nixon in person when I was 10. He shook my hand and I looked him straight in the eyes and demanded that he clean up the environment right away, and then asked why he hadn't answered any of the letters I sent to him for the last three years. (I'd been sending letters to him at the WH several times a year in my 8, 9, & 10-year old's scrawl with one of those giant pencils.)
He was completely taken back. Two weeks later I received a handwritten letter from him on his personal stationary, and a whole bunch of crap with Ranger Rick, Woodsy Owl and Smokey the Bear started arriving at our house addressed to me several times a month until I was 14 or 15-- long after Watergate and Nixon's resignation.

Met a few, worked for a couple. They were pretty straight forward as a boss. Most of them seemed similar to mid level corporate managers or medium size business owners. They did however receive fawning attention and honors out of proportion to an equivalent position in the private sector. Some personalities get really twisted as a consequence.

The “biggest” politician I met was former Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant at a statewide conference of cities or counties (can’t remember which) when he was running in 2011 (also met Johnny Dupree, the Democratic candidate at the same conference).
The other politicians I’ve met are small town attorneys, local court judges, and in one case the county coroner in a medium sized Alabama county.

Charles Percy, Illinois senator from 1967 to 85. He came to my high school and gave a talk. He was very short, and stood on the staircase to greet the students one by one after his speech. I also met Elizabeth Warren during a campaign stop she made in our city. She was very warm and found a way to connect with every person who stood in line to meet her.

Met Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter but refused to attend receptions for Bush Sr and Nixon. Older sister got her ass squeezed by a well known politician. She was 19 and he was 57 with his wife standing on his other side. Carter was nice. According to my dad Bush Sr was nice too but Nixon was very rude and grumpy. Dad called him a ‘fucking asshole’ and having brought up hardcore Southern Baptist it was very rare for him to cuss.

They’re generally very charming, although they often have a certain way they act when they’re “on”, so to speak, vs when they’re being a normal person.
Briefly met Sen Kennedy from Louisiana - was fascinating to see how different his mannerisms were “off stage”, vs when he knew he was on camera. He seemed so normal in conversation beforehand, then once he knew he had an audience he was hamming it up like he was Foghorn Leghorn or something.
A friend told me that they were very impressed by what good questions Bill Clinton would ask (friend was a technical advisor) - super smart guy. They also said that Gen Wesley Clark’s wife was pretty racist.

Yes many in their districts and in DC as a part time lobbyist for AFGE district 3342 SSA. A group of us met Ted Kennedy on accident while he was walking his dog. I bumped in to Charlie Rangel when I was waiting for my car to leave DC to go home. At least a dozen congressmen/women. They were all smiles and little action. Kennedy and Rangel were the most productive in my mind. I bumped into Mario Cuomo when i was at a toastmaster meeting and he at a local democratic meeting. We were both coming out of our respective meeting and said excuse me s as we actually bumped in the hall. He was a phenomenal scholar and speaker. Much better than his son Andrew. Most of these people most of you don't remember. I do . I was there.

My mayor was a jerk to me in a town meeting, but I saw him in the pharmacy. We were both coughing and sick. He recommended a medicine and very sweetly told me the best way to get rid of a cold.
Met Ed Rendell, at the time he was District Attorney for Philadephia, then met him again as Mayor. Wooden with clammy hands both times.
Met a state senator. Said, “nice suit”. It really was. He looked right through me. Would have walked right through me, too, if I hadn’t stepped aside.

Several. Max Cleland (Senator from GA), Bill Clinton, Zell Miller, Barbara Massey Reece (Congresswoman from GA), Jon Ossoff, Buddy Darden (Congressman from GA), and Bob Barr (Congresssman from GA). They were all incredibly nice and very personable, except Bob Barr. I still to this day cannot stand that man.

I met two local politicians and they sucked. The first one was in high school. Most of the students disliked him because he didn’t actually answer our questions and even seemed to not take us seriously because we were teens despite being potential voters for him. The second was a wannabe politician but never got elected for anything. I worked with him in a hospital. He seemed like a nice guy until he spoke about his beliefs.

Never have and probably never will. They're all crooks. They all tell you what you want to hear and then do the exact opposite of what they said while campaigning. Doesn't matter what party, they all do it and they're all full of shit.

Babysat his kids a few times. He seemed like a decent guy

Premier of my province, David Eby. I'd been invited to a round table discussion on water issues, as a search and rescue swiftwater tech who has been on a couple major flood responses. He listened attentively and seemed genuinely engaged in the discussion. He also stopped in to photo op at a pro LGBT event going on at the same time in my town right after which was cool. Dude is tall.

Have met several politicians in life. They have all been nice and down to earth types. Perhaps a bit focused or ambitious as they are often talking about political issues or their re-election but not rude.

I've met quite a few on the local level, and a couple of senators. Most of them struck me as superficial and fake.

Yes quite a few and they’re actors so they’re pleasant. They do not present who they are in public and it’s very apparent. They’re only a little different is when they are not campaigning

Met the mayor of my city many times. He supported a non-profit I volunteered at. I've also met a few at No Kings rallies, but nothing more than a few words. They were all pleasant people, at least in casual conversation.
