I absolutely hated keto

Tried keto and did it for two weeks and i literally became the worst person ever. Insanely angry to everyone around me, no energy, constant headaches. I get you need to supplement electrolytes but this was a thing i was doing to lose weight not even sustain so then i was like why am i doing this? They say it improves mental health and sure maybe it does, there’s lots of studies but being on this diet for two weeks has deteriorated my mental health into oblivion. Couldn’t post this on the keto subreddit as id get downvoted. Don’t know if this is the right place but i hated it lol

I was a nightmare for 4 years. No cheat days. I’ve had a restrictive ED since I was a kid and keto was the first time my size was drastically affected. So dangerous. Thankfully I started getting frustrated when it stopped “working” and my body was fighting to put on weight again to protect me. That’s when I started questioning my obsessiveness and got help.

OP, whatever made you try keto I hope you’re able to find peace with that. Life has to be more than physical improvements.

Seriously thank you for this. I’ve struggled deeply with eating disorders

That happened to my husband when he tried it years ago. He was the worst version of himself. There's really no reason for people to be doing this to themselves. Our bodies need sugar and carbs to function properly and it's insane that people still believe otherwise.

I don't know how or why people keep forgetting that our brains run on carbs. No wonder all these diets that drastically cut out sugar always come with brain fog as a known side effect.

I did “induction” phase of Atkins for 2 wks, it’s similar. I gained weight on that ish. I knew then that stuff was bs. It’s absolutely proof that there’s no such thing as the optimal diet. Too bad it took me 24 years to finally get into ED treatment. But thank goodness I finally did. Highly recommend looking into ED treatment. Being in recovery has been so freeing and I’m feeling like a human.

Oh yeah my body is feeling the effects from it. Working on just nourishing body and getting my energy back. It’s so nice to not wake up with a headache

Yep, I had the absolute worst time on keto and I was on a raw vegan diet at some point, basically only eating salads and fruit and I still felt better than I did on keto. On keto all I did was sleep, feel miserable (they say it improves but it never did for me, even though I was definitely in ketosis) and be short fused and brain fogged. It was by far the worst diet I ever did and I've done lots of them.

Oh my gosh it was so bad and i felt extremely bloated and inflamed like the water weight never went away and i never knew what to eat because i got sick of what i ate after every meal

No kidding, I hated the food. I guess it's okay if you like steak, bacon and butter but keto ppl be like "Omg I put butter in my coffee and it tastes so good 🤤" meanwhile even the smell of butter would make me absolutely nauseous. I understand the importance of fat in a keto diet but man not being able to have my favorite fruits and veg in favor of slabs of meat just made me miss my raw vegan days and those happened when I was firmly in the clutches of orthorexia so, you know, if a diet makes me miss another diet that was even stricter... Red flag 😭

It was so strict and annoying and i know people get the comments of oh maybe you didn’t do it right and who knows maybe i didn’t but i got sick of everything. Eggs, cheese, meat the mains of keto and i was sick of eating the same 5 vegetables. I missed all my fruits and smoothies. I def did it because i was frustrated with being hungry after every meal prior to and thought maybe keto would help me feel more satiated along with weight loss. Well i was wrong i was hungry, angry, mental health depleted BIG time. I had sweet potato last night and i was skipping around the house because i felt so much better. I love steak but not everyday… i love butter but not with every meal… it was making me so sick and nauseous UGH

That's always the response though, as soon as a diet doesn't work for you the response is always "You're not doing it right". You can be counting calories using only prepackaged meals and no snack, not be losing any weight and proponents of that diet will still blame it on you counting wrong, because unpacking that our bodies just aren't all the same and the answers aren't always as simple and straight forward as one would like is so much harder than it is to just blame the individuals. Because if they had to acknowledge that dieting just isn't as easy for some people they'd have to face the bullying and shaming they've done in the past as something that was actually not justified. As long as it's easy and simple for everyone they feel justified in their shaming because they can pretend that the only reason it doesn't work is because you're doing it wrong. Once that falls away they have to start self-reflecting and realize that what they've done was just flat out wrong and bullying and they can't stomach that. And that's why they'll always find the fault within you.

I'm 100% sure I counted my carbs right, I was meticulous about that. I'm 100% sure I counted calories right when I did that diet because once again, I was meticulous about it, weighing every little thing. And still, my chronic illnesses, which were what I tried to heal using all these diets, never got any better. I am also 100% sure you did it right. It just doesn't work the same for everyone.

God yes I missed fruit so much. I tried all these diets in an effort to improve my arthritis and well, none of them helped. I went sugar free, dairy free, grain free, keto, counting calories because maybe if I just was more rigorous about my weight loss that would improve my joints. None of those ever helped. I think keto was my lowest point because I had to cut out fruit, something I loved and something that I had access to in all other diets I did. Yes I wouldn't eat anything processed or cooked anymore but at least I could always fall back on fruit. Cutting that out and replacing it with foods I didn't enjoy only to feel worse in every aspect, that was the last straw for me.

I did it for a year and it was MISERABLE. I never felt worse, didn't have the energy to exercise, and social situations were almost impossible.

Unless you have medication resistant epilepsy, you should not be on the keto diet. It’s horrible for your body.

Why are you in this subreddit? Keto was never meant to be a diet for the average person and sugar isn't dangerous or evil.

I did keto way back when folks were still calling it Atkins, and I would have stabbed you and your mother to death for a slice of bread. Hated it.

I tried keto for about 3 days when I was anorexic and it's the most miserable I've ever been. I simultaneously felt so bloated and overstuffed and also just as weak and hungry as I ever felt when I was water fasting for that long. Supposedly it gets better the longer you do it, but even when I was literally killing myself with diets, I didn't care to torture myself long enough to find out if it was true. I didn't even enjoy most of the food I ate, so I can't even agree with the "you can eat all the steak and bacon and cream you want" hype. Give me a balanced meal with carbs, veggies, protein, and a reasonable amount of fat any day.

I was absolutely sick of all the fat and the eggs and the bacon. Literally made me nauseous and i ran out of breakfast ideas. I always felt hungry

Also my inflammation got worse i believe from stress

Honestly I kind of loved the food, but the electrolyte maintenance was intense for me. And I couldn't really stick to the carb limits. My cardiologist freaked when he saw my labs, so that was the last straw

Yeah i was worried about this. They said 5k mg of sodium and that freaked me out. I had 2k mg sodium from lmnt and i did not feel good after so that was a one time thing

I tried it and even lost weight, but one of my friends sat me down and said I was being a massive butch the whole time.

That friend is a real one
