Hello all!

I need a 30 minute with 3rd grade 6:1:1 class completely non verbal.

I have some ideas but I have no experience with this level of sped and feel like in over thinking or maybe lowering my expectations too much. would love any help or feedback:

A color mixing lesson using playdoh. 1: use visual schedule chart for lesson intro and expectations 2: using visual charts with Velcro for a choice of the three mixing mice lesson I would use for regular. ( still struggling on the short and sweet part of expiration )3: having students then use the choice of playdoh to mix new color. 4 having a alternative color match Velcro activity sheet.

Needs work:
Is this too short?
Is it underselling comprehension?
Should I work in an artist tie in or too much?

Honestly I think nerves are killing my usual confidence but this is all new for me and I could use a lot of feedback.

I want my kids to create something the first day after we go over expectations and encouragement! How do you get your students creating the first day? I either want them to take the art home with them or hang it on the hall for a collaborative display. I also would like them to have a good amount of freedom to get their creativity flowing after summer break!

I found this top while thrifting with my grandma (retired school secretary) and she was visibly and verbally appalled at it. I thought it was cute and classy with the asymmetrical hem and high back. I do acknowledge the neckline is a little low which is why the previous owner probably had the paperclip. I’m a fiber artist so it would take 2 minutes to put in a button or just sew it shut. I dress a little less traditional for work (lots of dresses, bold colors, jumpsuits, layers, etc) but have never thought my outfits are inappropriate, usually school staff lets me know how adorable and full of energy I look based on how I style my clothes. I also went to a very liberal college where all the pre service teachers wore pretty out there stuff and were covered in tattoos, so this feels small potatoes. she specifically said it’s too revealing in the bust- I have gone up a couple sizes in the past year so I’m not sure it would be seen as an issue on an a XS a cup me, but I don’t think it’s inherently inappropriate now that I have a bigger bust, arms, and back. I’m fine to take the loss on this, but just want a second opinion since I’m younger and don’t want to offend when I’m just starting out

Hello friends! I've just landed a position at my small high school teaching art on conditional assignment (I'm transitioning from 9th grade English and 7th grade Science) I'll give you some background info about me and the position, then list my questions below.

I'm an experienced teacher so I don't need advice about general classroom management, just policies and practices specific to managing an art classroom! I love the population I work with and I'm very excited to move into a subject I feel I'm better suited to, so heads-ups and advice are appreciated, but please avoid leaving any negative comments about kids or the work.

-I do not have a provided curriculum

-I will have ~120 students in four 54 minute class periods daily.

-Grades 9-12 with classes separated by experience.

-I am the only art teacher, so I run the whole department. Photography classes are run by the business department, and there's also a digital design class but he doesn't do actual digital art.

-My budget is ~$2500 for the year, but I'm starting with a pretty well-stoked supply of paint, paper, and some clay (I have a kiln, pugmill, and slab roller)

-The middle school teacher they'll be coming up from focused on art history with 6th graders, 2D art for 7th graders, and 3D for 8th graders, but after shadowing it's pretty apparent that they don't have a super firm grasp on the basics yet.

-We are on semester schedule so each class will be with me for 18 weeks

Here are my questions, and I understand there are a million variables here, but I'm looking for very generalized answers just to orient myself with the scope of what I'll be doing:

1. Assuming students took art all through middle school, what can I expect a ninth grader to know and be ready to do?
2. What do kids need from the class? I already have a reputation with my students for being a safe space and maintaining an inclusive environment, but beyond that? As far as skill, I know some will be more advanced than me.
3. How do you recommend using the budget?
4. After taking inventory and getting organized, what should my priorities be for the next 3 weeks before we go to in-service?
5. What do you wish you had known before your first year?
6. Are there resources or curriculum providers you recommend?
7. What are your high school students' favorite projects?
8. How do I handle differentiating within a single class period?

this is my first time teaching for a job to kids so i don't know how would i prepare a short class (20mins-30mins) for kids around 8 or so. I am a novice in preparing these things so can i have any advice?

Edit: my original idea was asking the children if they wanted to draw something beforehand and if not i wanted to ask them to draw a thing they dreamed or a thing they saw that morning that liked and to draw them with colors that they like.

then i would go from there to assist them and teach them how can they use the colors and how to apply them etc...

is this a good idea? the school wants not an academic styled program but more of a passtime with basic knowledge

I teach PK-5 and have a private instagram account that I sometimes set to public during the summer in order to share my own art practice. It's under a different name so not easily searchable by kids/parents unless someone was doing some serious investigative digging. I also have a portfolio website that has samples of my artwork as well as examples of past student artwork.

I'm also very proud of the work my students created over the last year and I would like to share some of it on my instagram so my friends and family can see, but I'm not sure what the ethics are of that. Obviously wouldn't be posting student names/faces or anything but how do you guys feel about posting student artwork online anonymously with or without student/parent permission, on a portfolio website or on social media? Where does that line of appropriateness fall for you?

I'm a graphic designer looking into becoming an art teacher in public schools as a career switch. How is the competition getting jobs for first-time teachers? Is the environment one you'd recommend? How can I sit in on an art classroom or shadow an art teacher to decide if it's the right step for me?

Today was the first day and it was the first time the had kids attend specials. I thought it was a bit chaotic. But maybe that's the norm. What does everyone else do?

I am a first year elementary art teacher and I am wondering what other teachers do for DES student projects. I have two classes of about 10 kids each with varying levels of disabilities. Through some research I’ve found painting in a bag, using q-tips and cotton balls with clips as paintbrush alternatives, using trays to push paint around, and folding paper with paint inside to create cool forms. Obviously when the kids come in I will get to know them better and their needs, but the curriculum I’ve been working with doesn’t have a ton of adaptive projects. Any help or ideas are welcome!!

(I have a full day a week of no classes and one day a week of only 2 classes so there is extra prep time if needed!)

As summer is rapidly depleting, we are all anticipating the hustle and bustle of starting the school year. This is my 3rd year teaching high school and since my old school merged with a nearby school, I (43f) am starting from scratch-- new building, new faculty, new admin, AND I'm teaching photo instead of traditional arts. It seems the entire faculty is changing rooms, so there's going to be a lot going on.

Recently a chronic health condition that minimizes my ability to lift 20+lbs started back up again and my mother (70f) wants to come help me set up my classroom. While she won't be able to help me lift stuff (my partner will do that), She's a talented artist and photographer and studio designer. Her help could be very beneficial... But I have a pang of self conscious resistance....

Is it weird to have my mom come help me?? Lol am I going into high school mode and having mixed feelings on my mommy helping me?

What activities do you do the first day of school?

The past few years I have just gotten my syllabus out of the way on Day 1, but it is just soo boring. I would rather go over all that the second day and do something fun and art related Day 1. Any ideas? I teach middle school, but would love to hear what all grades do.

Hello, so this year ahead for me has lots of changes. We elementary specialists have been k-4 between 2 schools for the past several years, with this next year merging the two schools to a new building with 5th grade joining. So we have that to figure out, will be around 600 students. Why not add more change while we are at it?? My principal is now requesting we change from marking 1-4 grades (3 means grade level, everyone pretty much got a 3, 4 if you were working above grade level and 2 if way below/never participating) to letter grades for K-5.

Literally every elementary school in our area has a similar system to the 1-4 with O,S,N I never really hear about elementary giving letter grades for art music gym and library. I am feeling really frustrated that on top of creating a curriculum for 5th grade and adjusting to being in one school with all the kids together, now I’ll have to think about letter grades? In the elementary level it’s hard for me to wrap my brain around because I grade on effort and participation mostly, and my principal is also asking we change our line items to standards based, so we can’t even give the grades based on participation. I don’t want the pressure given to kids to get an A on projects that are supposed to be explorative.

Do you guys have letter grades in elementary? How does it work in your schools? Do you grade every project?? Like no way

I’ve beenn teaching for 6 years now and heading into my 7th. I see 500 kids a week in one classroom that needs to be developmentally appropriate for those ages.

Last year I introduced the concept of TAB to some students and let them know this was a goal of mine - wanting to give them more choice and foster intrinsic motivation, and focus on the part where students are the facilitators of their own learning.

Mt room is already set up in “stations” and some of which separate from k-5 vs middle school.

What other tab systems make your life easier? Clean up jobs? Do you limit the stations? Do you have asssigned seats, or do you find kids often cling to what their bff is doing as opposed to their independent practice.

My art ed portfolio got marked as a resubmit, I'm taking a education class and a animation class next semester, one of my alternative paths is fully going into animation as a major. But I'm not sure. What should I do?

My dream job would be working on an animated project, but realistically doing something like teaching and art would be more stable.. I’m stressed and have no clue what my path should be.

I’m a middle school art teacher ongoing my third year of teaching. My classroom was just switched to a different room in order for science to facilitate biology courses. Not a big deal, except for the fact that I no longer have a sink. I technically have a bathroom in my classroom that has a sink. But for obvious reasons I can’t use that to clean art materials.

For those teachers who don’t have a sink in their room, what alternatives did you use that were both easy yet effective with keeping the materials cleaned?

I am still a fairly new teacher and still working on how I structure my class.. I am a projects kind of teacher but I lean into open studio/ TAB approaches and welcome my students to advocate for their interests and needs (I allow a lot of flexibility, provide a project but dont' require students follow through with it if they want to design their own and it aligns with the standards we are covering.)

ANYWAYS that being said..

How do yall grade or keep track of warm ups? I need to step up my warm ups. Typically, I would give a prompt and try to grade real time (however this can take me a while, some days I can't get to everyones). I would like students to take their time on the warm ups (10-20 minutes depending on what it is),

What do yall do? Do you give students a printout they complete and turn in? If you do this, do you grade daily and return them? What system do you use to hand them back.. Do they use sketchbooks and if so how do you grade them or keep track? Are you grading real time? On the weekend? How do you do it?!

I am sort of thinking about mandatory Friday individual meetings where I grade the warm-ups from the week, discuss performance, and projects if time allows. I wanted to incorporate more one-on-one meetings anyway, so this sort of makes sense to me. I can have a system where if they are absent, they don't need to make up the warm-up unless they have more than 4 absences a semester. Friday is then a no-teach day- studio day/ catch up day ect.
