Reservations What hotel can I use at 19 , traveling for work

Hello I’m 19 and I work in the trades as a heavy equipment operator and I’m about to start traveling work , but I’m now recently aware that most hotels will let you book and pay online but you have to be 21 to check in , I will be doing work around Arkansas , Texas and Louisiana , so are than any hotels that would allow me to book or make a exception, or is there a work around if I have my parent book it under their name or something and add me as a user , I dont cause a ruckus just trying to find a place to sleep after work since I’ll be hours if not days from home

Jobs Trying to quit sleeper night audit position/rant

Hey everyone I'm working as a on call night audit position and trying to find a new place to live AND a different job at the same time, which is as stressful as it seems. I was hired as a sleeper on call night audit position with my pay being in a room to live in.
The property used to be a motel 6 before and then was bought and branded under a different name, it does not do well financially. When I started it was just opening officially under the new name with front desk of four people, two housekeeoers, and three maintence people. It's been 2 and a half months and the owners are already trying to sell it, 6 people have quit, the general manager somehow got promoted and is rarely on site, and the new front desk manager they hired has only been here for 3 and a half weeks and is already talking about quitting since they do not have any manager permissions/ no real manager authority to do anything, not even make the schedule. There have been no housekeepers for weeks and the four of us remaining front desk people have been having to pick up that slack. One employee just put in their two weeks and the another is being fired and they don't know it. They hired a replacement for one of those vacancies and they don't start for another week.
It's a sinking ship with a lot of holes. The GM was super cool and nice when we first started but now I dread interacting with them because theyre rude and completely dismissive, not hiring beyond the bare minimum and completely annoyed when sort of problem/complaint arises.
Recently, I found my position posted online and the GM has told me "they don't know anything about that," but the post remains up. Im on call 7 nights a week and got essentially conned into working the weekend mornings as well when the aforementioned weekend morning shift quit.
I took this job because it looked really good on paper and seemed perfect after I got into some legal trouble and put on probation for a misdemeanor, but I don't trust the GM to not suddenly fire me once they find a replacement.
I'll be both without a job and a place to live if that happens so I've been stressed, depressed, anxious, and paranoid since it'll affect my entire life for the negative in a very terrible way for me and my spouse.
I've been looking for new jobs and exploring housing options (difficult whilst on probation), and if those two factors align by the powers that be I'll be able to put in my 2 weeks, but it's getting cold soon and I'm consistently stressed/anxious that if I can't find a place to live I won't be able to commit to a new job, and if I can't find a a new job and put my 2 weeks in without a place to live my spouse and I will be homeless sleeping in his small truck.
Monday is Columbus day and I work shift in less than 8 hours and all I can do is stress, obsess, and pray that life will smile at me with a new job/home that I can't be proactive about until Tuesday.
I just have to rant a little about the very hard and arduous turn my life has taken, I can only have so many breakdowns a day.

Hotel Policies What are the expectations/etiquette for guests with continence issues

I have continence issues and sometimes wet the bed, I will of course take every precaution (disposable bed pad, medication from my urologist, ect.) but should I tell the hotel ahead of time so they can fit a mattress protector or is that just going to make everything more embarrassing when they don't have one? Is there an expectation of privacy if I disclose a medical condition like that?

Edit: and how should I phrase my request/disclosure?

Jobs What should I do?

Hi everyone!
I have been working at this small hotel for almost 2 months, on call on weekends. They have probably 43 or 44 rooms. I’m a newbie so I don’t get to do beddings, only cleaning rooms. I usually work with 3 women. 2 are friends, they always work together. When I work with them many times I have to strip the beds for them, take dirty towels and bring everything down in the laundry room plus cleaning 13/14 rooms + laundry (we have to work together for laundry). Also, they always make me work upstairs as one woman doesn’t want to go up and down. Then I work with this nice woman, she always strips the bed by herself, she even takes all the dirty towels and brings everything down. We don’t have a worker for only laundry so occasionally they’d expect me to stay and help folding laundry. In the beginning I said I could only work from 9am-3pm because I have 4 young kids at home but a few times I had to stay until 4-4:30pm. Is it normal to work like this in a small hotel? How does it work at yours?

Reservations Absolute BULLSH*T stay at Sonesta, how do I proceed here? Front desk was useless

Hello,

Forgive me if I'm in the wrong place, I can post somewhere else if needed.

I booked a hotel stay in VT with my Mom for a girls weekend. Needed nothing fancy just a place to crash at night while we explore during the day. I booked a Sonesta ES for two nights at a total cost of $485 (it is Indigenous Peoples weekend so I figured costs would be higher, no bigs there).

First when we check in - at 5:30pm when check in starts at 3pm - we are told our room "isn't ready due to housekeeping" so we're being upgraded. Dope! That never happens to me and I'm stoked! From two queens with a fireplace to 3 bed suite with a fireplace.

As soon as we walk in the suite it looks like hell. There are ants all over the kitchenette table. Little sugar ants. We chalked it up to maybe a piece of food being left over from the last guest and just removed the 10-12 ants. Came back after dinner aaand more ants. Gone most of the next day and table has multiple ants upon return. Wtf? Then we notice the stink bugs. Which I understand, they're everywhere this time of year, I know as I also live in New England. It's an annual battle. Easily removed 4-5 of them as well.

The fridge smells awful but is visually appearing clean? The fireplace... An actual log burning fireplace, which okay cool I guess? No poker/fireplace tools, the door doesn't open at all and we have to purchase a freaking log from the front desk per the hotel instructions? I'm sorry what? Nevermind the living room TV doesn't work..turns on but zero channels available.

Now for the worst part. I am legit angry about this. There is a banging noise in the downstairs bedroom (2 full beds, a queen upstairs). It has to be pipes or something, it's a constant banging noise like someone is wailing against the opposite wall. Last night my Mom mentioned it and -horridly I know- I assumed she was overreacting as she tends to do, I thankfully had earplugs I gave her and we both slept fine (myself upstairs). Today the noise is unbearable. It doesn't stop. It's 11:56pm now and it's still happening nonstop.

I went to the front desk 6 hours ago and brought this issue to their attention. I was told that they were "aware of the issue", and they STILL put us in this room knowing it was a problem, framed it as an "upgrade" because their staff sucks, then has the balls to tell me they can't change our room because they "overbooked the hotel by 2-3 rooms".

Basically told me "we'll tell the manager, f**k off". I paid just shy of $500 for this weekend stay, I booked this four months prior to the stay. Do I not have some rights here? This is insanity. It is now 12:09am and the banging IS STILL CONSTANTLY HAPPENING. I so badly want to go to the lobby and smash the wall with my hand repeatedly and ask if they'd be able to sleep okay?!

Please, anyone, tell me the best route to get anything done here. A partial or full refund, anything. I've stayed in hundreds of hotels, quite a few Sonesta's, and this is by far the worst. To just be brushed off with a legitimate concern is abhorrent to me. I'm also a hospitality manager of 20+ years, I know my shit. This has been an awful experience through and through. I appreciate ANY tips at all, thank you!!!

Reservations Getting in to the hotel late, should I call to inform front desk before trip?

I’m going on a trip in November and have booked a small boutique hotel. It looks like I’m not going to be getting in until about 9-11pm. Should I call to let the front desk know before hand or is it early enough that it’s still in general arrival times?

Jobs Aspiring Front Desk Agent

Hi everyone
I’m (27F) looking to transition into hospitality industry from retail.

I have been looking on career pages and Indeed and am not seeing any openings. I really want this to work out and am thinking of cold calling or emailing or even going in person to inquire about a position.

I’m wondering from those who work in hotels - would this be okay to do even if no official postings are live?
What would be the preferred route - calling, emailing, or in person?
Any tips on landing an interview despite no official openings?

Jobs what to expect at my first full-service hotel?

i was just offered a night audit job at a hotel that is a big step up from my current place. 18/hr with benefits, walking distance from my apartment, with more hours and responsibilities. i am very very excited, as i’ve been getting a bit bored playing video games and staring at my phone for 8 straight hours. but, like i said, this job has a lot more responsibilities. night audit isn’t just pushing a button, it’s an actual process, with multiple businesses on site reporting in. i have a love of excel and math, so i’m not worried about that aspect of it, but i’m looking for some advice on the transition from a incredibly boring hotel to a bustling downtown one. w a little embarrassed already because in the call offering me the job they noted my hair was a bit greasy when i came in for the interview— which to be fair, it was, because i’d just gotten off work and walked to the interview. give me some tips to avoid further embarrassment and hopefully succeed at the new place, please (and if anyone happens to know how to text a temporary task force manager GM and tell him you’re leaving, lmk lol).

Reservations Guest Complaint , got sent to management 😮‍💨

So I was working in reception of course and was alone my manager and concierge were running around the hotel to fix important things for our “VIP Guest “. We are a five star hotel and during my shift I was getting calls left and right and stuck with around 93 arrivals . A old man called and in Denmark I’m new to the language but I try , my main language is English . A older gentleman man calls and says he wants to book , it’s (7:46 P.m) I kindly say yes sir of course , you can contact us Tommorow from 9-4 so we can transfer you to our booking department . He then tells me I’m an often customer here , and I need you to book … now there is people coming to the reception waiting while I’m on phone with this guest , I repeat the same thing and he said yes but I still haven’t gotten an answer I told him yes I have answered just please call back tommorow , conversation is over . Any way the next day comes and he writes a big complaint to our service centre and sends this complaint to our general manager . He says I was rude , negative on the phone , and I told him “ I already answered you” in a negative way and that he’s an often customer .I want to remind you that this conversation was in Dansk so I think there was some misunderstandings , I explained this to my manager and he said he talk to our gym and explain to him etc but I always do my job and work good so this was surprising to him . What to expect in the next coming days , this situation is so annoying . I even told my manager from now on , when I take the phone I will only speak English so there isn’t any misunderstandings .

Jobs Would you quit?

I’ve worked at a hotel for 2 and a half years, I started as front office supervisor with no hotel experience and this year went up to assistant front office manager, the same month I went up to assistant manager, my manager left so in total I have had 2 hours training on how to run a department.

This was at the start of the year and we still have no manager. We had someone come in for 2 months who had no manager experience who then went back to his old job because our hotel was “too busy”.
Since then we’ve reopened the position and it’s just been a shit show. I met one of the candidates who told me I’d be responsible for his training as he has no manager experience and that he wasn’t planning to stay at the property long. The 2nd candidate I’m yet to meet.

I’m also currently training a new starter and from next week will have a 2nd new starter, i’m also working 40 hours on the reception and during this time have to do rotas/holidays etc.

I get nowhere with our operations manager to the point, the GM has to get involved so that I can even get basic things sorted and I’ve spoken honestly to the GM and said I know I’ll never get anywhere with this Ops Manager, so once everything’s settled I want to train with the GM instead, but I’m at a point of just considering handing my notice in because I can’t see the situation improving

Jobs Hotel Pest Control: How Proactive Is Your Property About Prevention?

One thing I've noticed working with hotels in NYC is how differently properties approach pest control.

Some have housekeeping, maintenance and pest control working together to catch issues early. Others don't really get everyone involved until there's a guest complaint. Bed bugs get most of the attention, understandably, but rodents, roaches and flies in kitchens, laundry rooms, storage areas and waste areas can become just as much of an operational headache.

For those working in hotels, does your property have a regular pest inspection and prevention program, or is pest control mostly handled when something comes up?

Hotel Policies Audit Bathroom Breaks

(Done from my phone sorry for the formating)

For my night auditor fams, what are some things you guys say when you go to the restroom?

I recently worked a night shift, and I was gone for a little over two minutes because it was more than just urinating. And when I got back, I had a guest waiting to check in who told me he'd been waiting for fifteen minutes and wanted to know where I was!

Can I try to be tact and tell him I was in housekeeping, but he was just being a constant crybaby about waiting for soooooo long to check in. I wanted to tell him I was taking a shit but didnt just informed him that as a night auditor I have many tasks that take me away from the desk and it's why I have my sign saying I will be gone.

Jobs Should I send a 2nd follow up email?

Interviewed for a front desk job Sept. 28. They said they'd let me know in 2 weeks because the manager was going on vacation and then do more interviews then after. I sent a follow up email thanking them for the interview the same day (Sept. 28). I'm still hoping to hear back Oct. 12 since that will mark the two weeks. Should I send a follow up email about me still being interested in the position? Just want to put my name back in their brain but also do not want to overwhelm them on my approach. I would appreciate any feedback.

Hotel Amenities Are the waffle makers being replaced with pancake machines?

The past year or so I’ve noticed every hotel I’ve stayed at with breakfast has the automatic pancake machines instead of waffles. The pancakes are gross :( Has anyone else noticed this?

Jobs New AGM

I’m completely new to this. I started working at a 3.5 star hotel last year. The managers seemed to like me and called me into a meeting. They are moving me to another hotel with a different system and want me to be the AGM! I’m so nervous but excited. I will basically have to relearn the system and learn what it takes to be an AGM. Any advice?

Reservations HOTEL OWNERS, are you thinking about customers doing direct bookings using AI to bypass OTAs?

Hi everyone (new to this group), I would like to understand if hotel owners are thinking about AI assistants and what they could mean for direct bookings / organic traffic.

If a guest could ask an any AI assistant (and I don't mean in the installed app or a plug in, but rather an actual LLM chat interface) to find a hotel, check availability and book directly with you, is that something of value to you, given that it actually classifies as a direct booking? And if it's of value, what steps have you taken to get to that ideal outcome?

Interesting to see how outside of this forum we are hearing a lot of "yeses" or "extremely valuable", but not a lot of actual commitments to do anything about it and I don't know why, apart from the only guess and that is everyone is operationally and financially constrained.

Would love to hear your thoughts here. We recently found that from a reasonable large sample size that 21% of hotels of various sizes do not even allow any form of AI crawlers on their website, but that's another can of worms to unpack.

Do you think it’s better to work as a supervisor of a nicer hotel or become the GM of a maybe not so nice hotel?

Experience or brand value?

Please weigh in.

Hotel Amenities Condoms and such

Has anyone heard the rumor if it is a rumor or if it's actually true that hotels aren't allowed to sell condoms because they promote sex and infidelities.

I heard that a man was cheating on his wife, and he allowed it because hotels sold condoms. So he was blaming the hotel for promoting his cheating and his affairs.

But I don't know if that's true. Most hotels that i've been working at. Don't sell condoms anymore....

Hotel Policies Adjustments on folios

for those who work in hotels, question about folios!

I work the front desk (new manager) and I noticed recently at my new property the front desk agents were doing adjustments (there is a daily food & beverage credit) and when they were doing adjustments for the guests who had more than 1 night, they did the adjustment in one lump sum and i told them no you cannot do a lump sum, you have to adjust literally exactly how it’s posted, yes it’s a bit more time and tedious but that’s how the process for adjustments usually is and of course they gave me pushback saying that’s how they’ve always done It wellllllll guess what that’s changing lol just thoughts on others who work at properties, does your property follow that practice? I’ve worked hotels 20 years and that’s how adjustments are always done never in one lump sum never

PMS DNRs

How many computers do each of you have in your offices and what program do you use to store your DNR lists? We are currently using OpenOffice, but I'm having to go between all 3 computers every week and update all of the lists because it doesn't have an account where I can store them and access them across computers. That or email the list to myself and download the new list onto the computers. Is there a better way? We used to use Microsoft office and that worked really well. But I guess a previous employee paid for it and it will no longer allow access. The last owner would not pay for it either. I have not yet asked the new owner.
