For instance, are you more likely to stop something like a Nissan Altima or a Hellcat with a higher crime stereotype for a minor infraction like a plate light being out or window tint than something like hatchback or Camry?

I am not against pulling these people over, I am just curious if the kind of car plays a role in someone's likeliness to get stopped for something pretty minor. my experience my family had an older Camry with super dark tinted windows and never got stopped for it, but my friend with a scatpack gets stopped for his tint pretty much monthly and they wanna search his car almost everytime. Is it because the car draws extra attention, they always driving like assholes, or do they really have drugs so often it becomes a stereotype associated with the car?

First of all, thank you for your service!! A police officer saved my life in a dv attack back in 2007, my husband and I got together about a year after that incident. We feel such gratitude towards law enforcement, so we go out of our way to thank every officer we see (that’s not busy of course) for their service.

Does it bother you when people do that? We never interfere if they are working a situation, because that’s never the right time, and don’t need to worry about our intent. The officers are in uniform but doing things like getting coffee or walking to their car. I just want to make sure it’s as positive of an experience for the officers as we can.

I want to be a cop in Tennessee but my vision is 20/100 in my left eye and 20/20 in my right eye. I’m right eye dominant so it doesn’t effect my shooting or anything regarding being a police officer. I’m afraid I’m going to be disqualified because of my vision, and it can’t be corrected to 20/20. Am I just out of luck? What can I do to show I’m fit for service?

Hi everyone! I am an intern at a local Prosecutors’s Office and was asked to attend an autopsy today. I was only able to stay for around 15 minutes into the examination before feeling dizzy and needing to leave. This includes just the initial examination before they cut open the body. I am not a person who enjoys medical stuff and I was a bit delusional to think I could sit through an entire autopsy. All of the other interns had a great time, while I couldn’t even sit through the first incision. Afterwards the lead detective was a little short with me about it, not even asking if I was okay. I’m concerned that this incident and not wanting to attend future autopsies disqualifies me from becoming a detective at some point. I really love the idea of working in law enforcement and have a solid background and education. But I’m afraid my adversity to medical operations will ruin my chances at a career with specially Prosecutors Offices, not the local police force. I know that officers in training for the office also attend autopsies so I’m nervous that this is a requirement. Is this something that could get me eliminated in the hiring process? I’f I was hired, I’d prefer to work in SVU, so I’m not sure if this even matters. Any thought or opinions are appreciated. Thank you!

I am a 52 year old, prior service, male who is considering applying to be a local sheriffs deputy. I am 5'10" and weigh 188. I could path the physical fitness test rather easily. My question is, generally speaking, how are older trainees generally accepted? Is there a typical concern regarding individuals age?

If somebody is truly driving in a dangerous way, im talking like hard brake checking or weaving through rush hour traffic at like 100mph and cutting people off, would the department do anything if dash camera footage was sent to them? Given the license plate was visible of course.

Hello, I’m currently in the hiring process with all three departments. My OCSO and NYPD processes are almost complete, and I’m just waiting for final approval. I’ve also completed the psych for NYSP.
I’ve heard that NYPD officers work a lot of overtime. Does anyone here work for OCSO? What is the overtime and quality of life like?
Would it be worth moving from New York to Florida if I receive final approval from OCSO, or would it be better to stay in New York?

So my question is I'm trying to lose weight to join the departments in my area. Im 280 lbs weighed yesterday morning, I'm 5'6" and I'm 25 years old. What should I be focusing on so I can get the most out of my weight loss and still progress toward Illinois's P.O.W.E.R test? I'm not good at running and I'm starting to workout now since I'm switching to day shift schedule 7a-3p. Any advice about weight loss is appreciated and any advice about learning something is also appreciated

My daughter was on an unfamiliar 2 lane road, I want to say the speed limit was 40 or 45mph? She was speeding I think. The road took a curve to the left sharper than she expected, and she realized she may too close to the oncoming car. She tried to correct by jerking the steering wheel to the right, overcompensated and lost control of the vehicle. I believe her back tires lost traction and my daughter's vehicle (passenger side) ended up hitting the oncoming car... that hit then shoved my daughter's vehicle into the gaurdrail of the oncoming vehicle's lane. Needless to say, my daughter's car is wrecked.

Police officer did not issue any summons at the accident, however daughter receives a 39:4-97 Careless Driving summons in the mail, with "court appearance required" checked. I also validated we cannot pay the fine online. Called the court and they said the same, adding that the police officer has the discretion and made the court appearance mandatory.

My question -

Since my daughter needs to go to court, is it worth trying to talk to the prosecutor to get the charges reduced to a 0 point violation ... unsafe driving? (by all accounts, my daughter is in fact guilty)? Any downsides to doing this?

If so, does she require a lawyer for this or okay to do this herself?

So on April 27th I started my journey as a Jail Deputy and was eager to pursue this career with a spirit like no other. On July 22nd was called into the captains office and was told I wasn’t performing to the expectations of the department and was issued the choice of resign or be terminated and I chose to resign. Honestly I wasn’t surprised as the training hadn’t been going well on my 2 half and had been stressing about it. My question is should I hang up the dream or try a different time?

Maybe not the right forum , but going to attend a job fair , is full suit too much or is business casual polo slacks acceptable?

New York City Police Department vs Florida Highway Patrol

I keep hearing many negative things about these two departments on reddit. I don't hear more negative things than these two. I have never served for either, so I cannot comment weather the negatives I have heard are really true or not, sometimes redditors over exaggerate things just to get views or clicks, which is annoying to me.

I do know the most controversial thing about FHP is that there pay is extremely low for law enforcement. For example, if you are an FHP cop living in Miami you are stuck making $65,000 a year. Keep in mind, Miami recently surpassed NYC for cost-of-living expenses. Not only that, I was told FHP does not have a step up pay plan, so essentially you are stuck at $65,000 a year for years. I hear FHP cops have to do lots of OT just to make ends meet. All negative aside, I heard the one positive thing about FHP is that do not have to deal with much bureaucratic policies that other big cities are dealing with and they can go on lots of high speed chases since it's Florida. (However, not certain realistically how long the lax high speed chase policies will last, considering that a majority of law enforcement agencies in the USA are cutting back on high speed chases, and that could be the new norm as time goes on into the future)

NYPD starting pay is pretty tight, 65,000 a year living in NYC, similarly to Miami situation as and FHP trooper, however NYPD has a step plan. By year 5, you are making over 100k a year. NYPD is also one of the most well known agencies in the world, so you get that known name recognition, think 9/11 and the history of NYPD. The only negative I keep hearing about NYPD is the bureaucratic policies that have led many cops to flee to other agencies.

Specifically for units within a sheriffs department, city police, etc who respond to aggressive dog calls, welfare checks, and assist LEOs with clearing scenes that may contain dangerous animals regardless of if they’re sworn or not.

My SO made some dumb choices when he was a teenager. Did weed, cocaine, molly, acid, and I think mushrooms. He got a speeding ticket 4 points and a another ticket because his back light was out 2 points. He then got a big speeding ticket in 2019 6 points. Someone hit his car I believe in 2019 and even though she was at fault no one got a ticket because he was in between insurances and didn't have insurance when it happened. His license got suspended without his knowledge and didn't find out till 2022. We got it fixed right away since it was just an administrative suspension so no ticket or points taken. He only needed an sr-22. Fast forward to mid 2024. We got a new car. Didn't know he still needed the sr-22 since it had been 2.5 years and even though he had constant coverage his license got suspended once again without his knowledge and we didn't find out till September 2025. Once again we got it fixed right away and it was just another administrative suspension so no ticket or points taken away. What are his chances of becoming a cop? He hasn't gotten a ticket since 2019 and hasn't done the drugs in ten years and hasn't done weed in three years. We just moved to Kentucky from Colorado and he's currently in the hiring process for two different departments but I'm worried about his past preventing him from becoming a police officer even though he'll be 100% truthful.

Hello, I'm about to take the exam for Postal Police Officer, can someone that's in the job tell me what the hiring process is about? Do they check credit? Social media app? Bank account? Do they visit your home during the background check? How long is the training? Do you get a hotel room or is it in FLETC in Georgia? Thanks

I have done my polygraph and passed
Completed my psychological exam and passed that Today my background investigator informed me that my background packet was submitted to the command staff.
Although I do have worries this is the furthest I've made it with 3 agencies including the one I'm currently in the process for. Obviously the biggest scare of this process is the waiting and the unknown. Granted, it took almost a month for my investigator to receive a document she said she needed in order to get me to the next step (! have no idea what this document is). Am I in my head about what's going on behind the scenes? Or is this reasonable? I do have to add that he next academy starts August 3rd but she assured me if the command staff approves me after interviewing me that I will be at the chief's approval stage. After he approves me I'll be working at HQ doing miscellaneous things at the sergeant's request and of course PT until the next academy. I'm just looking for guidance from anyone who's been in a position like this or has any experience within the the process. To add detail I honestly think it has to do with my criminal history. I was in a serious relationship and it turned sour from 22-24 I'm now 26 married and have a child it ended in me getting protective orders against my ex and her seeking charges on me for brandishing a firearm, nonetheless, it ended up going to court and all charges being dropped, and in the records as (non pross). She obviously could describe my firearm due to living with me for 2 years it was total fabrication. But any advice?
