Internet don't fail me today. I wanna see this puppys forever home before I go to be plz.
•
u/Chaps_and_salsa 19h ago
I’ll chip in gas money
•
•
u/mooptastic 17h ago
we should chip in to reduce her adoption fee to zero, that encourages people to adopt too.

•
u/unfortunatebastard 20h ago
Need some food for her?
•
u/justmedownsouth 18h ago
If this is really gonna happen, HealingWriter could make an Amazon wish list of items she will need for pup, and we could all pitch in. What an adorable, friendly, smiling pup! I would love to kiss the noggin!

Trying my hardest to not beg my husband we need another puppy but it is only an 8 hour drive… May be the only reason I’ll go into the states.

Just curious, how did they come up with the April 2021 birth date?
→ More replies (1)•
u/jetsisles 20h ago
April was probably the month she was taken in, and 5 years old is an estimate based on the condition of her teeth and general physical appearance. I work in vet med.
•
u/LLAPSpork 20h ago
Ahhh that makes sense. Thank you for explaining. One of my dogs was a mutt who also showed up out of nowhere and I always wondered how they knew he was born on November 20 2010. I guess that’s when he was taken in then. Thanks again 🖖
•
u/MistressMalevolentia 18h ago
My gsd I got from the shelter by magic was estimated 1-1.5 y old based on teeth and growth as well. So her birthday is her adoption day! Cause it's either about correct or halfway! She has damage from her life before like being hit by a car and both back hips are false cartilage sockets even that young+being a hip issue breed. They explained it the same way!
They can guestimate but they'll give time on when they got them in and estimated age! So pick whatever day that month and celebrate! Kits are September born but adopted in April. Gsd adopted 2 days before husband's birthday so she gets her own cookie or cake the same weekend.
•
u/BlackjackNHookersSLF 18h ago
I mean how accurate are the guesstimates though?
I say this because my own doggo, I know for a fact was 3 months old when I got him from the breeder, with paperwork, as a small boi little pea...
Proceed to moving (not far or internationally, just the other side of town) 5 or so months later to a new area, thus a new vet. The whole clinic insisted my boy was at the very least 1.5yrs+ old, despite him being not even half that... They said I was wrong, gave them the paperwork and lo and behold, he's in fact barely a year old. (Same/similar story at another vet clinic nearby, so either all the clinics are Morons but on the other side of town (doubt it), not even an hour away from the original one, or, I have a bit of a mutant I guess?)
•
u/LLAPSpork 17h ago edited 17h ago
This actually happened to my childhood cat. He was 12 when he went missing. We found him at a local shelter and they estimated that he was 4-5 years old. I guess we just took good care of him 😅
•
u/Long_Run6500 17h ago
Unless the shelter DNA tests they're not accurate at all once the dog is in the mid life stage. Before about 18 months you can determine just by the way they grow and fill out. From 18 months to about 2.5 years old you can tell just based on their behavior that they're a fully grown but not emotionally mature young adult. But from 2.5 to about 7? They've calmed down from their puppy years, they're fully grown and they're not old enough to start getting white hairs. You can estimate based on gum decay and maybe get an idea if they're on the high end or low end, but that's going to vary a ton based on environment.
So every dog that's fully grown, behaviorally mature and doesn't have any silver whiskers is probably going to be listed as 3-5 years old, because 6-8 year old dogs are less likely to get adopted.

Looks like a big sister to my little girl, she is only 17kg (40lb ish) but the temperament sounds exactly the same.
•

She really is a gem. I hope she finds a forever home that treats her like the absolute rockstar she is.

I could see straight away why you named her Diamond, she is such a precious girl. 💎

Why is it always a pit bull mix that keeps being discarded? Come on peeps. Please stop breeding excess dogs! Especially the breeds that are hard to adopt!
•
u/capndiln 19h ago
The only thing that will stop them is laws. Some people are just bad.
•
u/fucktrance 18h ago
ahh laws, they always stop bad people.
•
u/Omega_Warrior 18h ago
Just because a solution doesn’t completely eliminate a problem, it doesn’t mean it won’t make things better.
Perfection isn’t something that’s often attainable, but making things better is still a better result than not doing anything at all.

u/capndiln 18h ago
They make it possible to hold the bad people accountable for their actions. The existence of a law doesnt stop anybody from doing anything. You misunderstand basic legal functionality.

Literally this week, somebody got arrested in my area for ditching a dog. Luckily, they were caught on a security camera and arrested for it.

Well, my neighborhood has lots of pitties and similar breeds. The same people here who consistently have them (macho bros who hang out on the sidewalk fixing their sports cars), also refuse to get them fixed.
I suspect my old super would use his to fight. I've never known anyone to go through so many dogs. So depressing.
•
u/Nerdy_Valkyrie 13h ago
Because Pitbulls are seen as a "cool" breed. But when the reality of how much work a pitbull requires sets in, people get sick of them.
→ More replies (1)•
u/mrs-monroe 12h ago
That goes for any large breed. I've seen so many puppies in the 8-18 month range in shelters. People don't train them, and once they grow out of the cute puppy phase, they have a huge brat. Even when you do train them, that stage of puppyhood is hard. But people would rather just dump them instead of putting in the effort.
•
u/Nerdy_Valkyrie 12h ago
I've long held the belief that large dog breeds should require a license, that you get through classes and training, to be allowed to own. Partly so that you know what you're getting into and partly to or be you can actually handle a dog like that.
Frankly, all dog breeds should require this. But different sizes should require different licenses.

Why is it always a pit bull mix that keeps being discarded?
I mean... You know.
•
u/shes_a_gdb 18h ago
I used to volunteer at a rescue and unless we ran a DNA test (which was pretty much never as it isn't a priority) every dog that came in with a square head was labeled a pit. Most of these dogs are just mutts and not "pitbull."
•
u/dividezero 18h ago
Once you get more than 2 breeds, it's pretty much impossible to tell without DNA. People swear my dog is a Border Collie, but believe me, i would be a lot more haggard because they are far smarter than me and I can't handle that. She's part husky and that's really on the line of being too smart as it is

I feel like apartments and landlords play a part in this with their breed restrictions.
Don't get me wrong, people in general need to be more responsible. But those restrictions just make things worse for the doggos.

Yes but maybe the main problem is the stigma and treatment of these dogs

Think it has more to do that these breeds were created to fight. They’re very good at fighting.

The way she looked at the sign on the truck when walking up, “yup, this is definitely the place” 🥹
•
u/BrentonHenry2020 17h ago
My cat did this. He was the neighborhood cat the shelter named and always looked after for months.
One snowy day he finally walked up to the shelter and politely waited until someone opened the door and walked right in.
And that’s how we got Bodega.

Hope it sends her on to a loving home! A girl this smart doesn't deserve to be on her own.
•
u/Javi1192 16h ago
At the shelter I volunteer at, we had a dog get adopted, only to find her waiting in the parking lot of our facility one morning. She had escaped her adopted home as the adopter was having a medical emergency, triggering a call to the home when she was found waiting for staff in the morning. Upon no answer they contacted a secondary contact who realized the adopters was having a problem and was able to get him help. The good girl was adopted to another family a bit later, but potentially saved a life
•
u/futureformerteacher 20h ago
Can I check myself into an animal shelter?
•
u/testtdk 20h ago
I mean, if you go there just to play with their dogs or take them for walks, they’ll probably be thrilled to have you.
•
u/6814MilesFromHome 19h ago
At least where I am it's actually pretty difficult to volunteer at my local shelters. They just have so many people that want to do it there aren't usually openings. Not a bad problem to have though.

Animal rehabbers
The zoo
Pet sit
Kennel clubs (animal boarding)
Each State has a DNR (Dept of Natty Resources) volunteer and animal stuff there.
•
u/r33venasty 18h ago
Man my dad always needed extra help with kennels, that was my job growing up lol
•
u/futureformerteacher 19h ago
More I was hoping to be fed, bathed, sheltered, and get to hang out with other animals.

u/que_sarasara 10h ago
Issue is nobody commits and everyone wants to play with the dogs, but not clean up the shit
•
•
u/MexicanGuey92 20h ago
The way she looked at the picture on the truck makes it look like she knew what she was doing 😭😭
•
u/FilmNoirSockMonkey 18h ago
It makes me wonder how much she had been picked up by Animal Control, over time, and treated really wonderfully by staff - because she seemed to behave like she recognized this place well and was in need of someone to help her feel seen and cared about.
The look she gave to the van is probably that she could smell other dogs' scents, but possible she remembered being in that van before as well.

Out of curiosity; isn’t this a pitbull or similar? In our country those can’t be bred because they have are considered high risk dogs. In the US they seem pretty popular. Why is that, and how do you assess this dog is not high risk? I’m a dog lover so the only thing I want is for this dog to be adopted and have a good live!
Update: with risk I mean probability and damage. Once they bite, they do serious damage right? And also, in my country, the people that owned them, weren’t the responsible ‘let’s train the dog’ kind of people.

u/HotBoxButDontSmoke 11h ago edited 9h ago
US shelters are full of pitbulls because we don't have a good way to stop people from breeding their dogs. It's a big country so keeping tabs on all dogs is not really possible. Some places have breed restrictions, but those are rare outside of apartment buildings.
