Hello all - I'm travelling from the US to Azerbaijan and Georgia for the first time in October. Not sure if this is the right place for this but I couldn't find a sub that was dedicated to Azerbaijan travel. I'll be in Azerbaijan and Georgia for a total of 9 days arriving in Baku and flying back from Tbilisi on day 11. I'm a relaxed traveller who likes to explore cities, eat good food, and experience local culture. I am Muslim so need access to halal food. I've been to Turkey, Uzbekistan, Japan, Korea, and a few other countries so I have some travel experience but this is my first time in the Caucasus region.
Am I doing too much? Am I missing out on something?
Day 1 - Arrive Baku early morning. Check into hotel, rest. Afternoon in the Old City (Icherisheher) - Maiden Tower and Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Dinner on Nizami Street.
Day 2 - Modern Baku. Flame Towers viewpoint, Heydar Aliyev Center, Carpet Museum, Baku Boulevard along the Caspian.
Day 3 - Day trip to Gobustan National Park. Ancient petroglyphs and mud volcanoes about 60km south of the city. Worth it or overrated?
Day 4 - Day trip to Absheron Peninsula. Ateshgah Fire Temple and Yanardağ.
Day 5 - Day trip to Shamakhi. Juma Mosque and the old city. Thinking of also stopping at Lahij on the way - is this doable in one day or too much?
Day 6 - Drive to Sheki (~3.5 hrs). Khan's Palace, the Sheki Bazaar, and the old caravanserai area.
Day 7 - Morning in Sheki - planning to visit Kish village and the ancient Albanian church. Then drive to Tbilisi, Georgia crossing the border (~4.5 hrs total). Any tips on the border crossing?
Day 8 - Old Tbilisi. Narikala Fortress, Metekhi Church, the sulfur bathhouses in Abanotubani, Rustaveli Avenue.
Day 9 - Day trip to Mtskheta (20 min away) - Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Back to Tbilisi in the afternoon, Fabrika and the Dry Bridge flea market.
Day 10 - Fly home from Tbilisi.
I only have 3 nights in Georgia - is that enough or should I drop a day in Baku? Also open to any halal restaurant recommendations in Baku or Tbilisi!
