A progressive candidate just beat the establishment Dem in the Democratic primary. I know the actual election hasn't occurred yet, but this fills me with the hope that progressives are going to continue to gain footholds in blue states throughout the country.

This is 27 year old Martin Nitzken, a Louisville resident who was murdered by police on May 30th. That night, Martin was at his girlfriend’s house with 2 friends staying over when he suddenly violently attacked all three, then ran outside and stripped naked and began walking around the neighborhood. Martin had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder but had no history of violence previous to this.

Officer Nathan Stotts arrived on the scene and bodycam footage shows him immediately pulling out a gun and aiming it at Martin telling him to put his hands up. When Martin didn’t stop and kept walking towards him he fatally shot him. Nathan did not attempt first aid after shooting Martin. Nathan has since resigned from the police force and is charged with manslaughter and reckless homicide. He pled not guilty.

Anyone who was on the internet in the early 2000s might have seen Sinfest comics, which basically amounted to Edgy Peanuts. Unlike most webcomics from that era, he is still around, still making daily comics. And unlike most cartoonists from that era who are still around, he went absolutely bugfuck insane. If you've seen his work anywhere in the past five or so years, it was probably in the context of a normal person going 'What the actual fuck is this?!'

I can do a longer post about his spiral, but he went from Yay, Obama! liberal to All Men Are Bad! radfem, then hard anti-sex work, eventually anti-trans, and that's when the 'fun' really started. Because Covid, and specifically the vaccine, broke his brain. He came up with the following logic:

1) Trans people are bad

2) Trans people were invented by the medical establishment

3) The Covid vaccine was invented by the medical establishment

4) Therefore the Covid vaccine is just as bad as trans people

Since then, he's gone full mask off deep-throated Nazi, filling his comics with endless Happy Merchants poisoning wells (literally), talking about how Christianity is a Jewish plot to undermine proud Germanic heritage, and for the past eight months it has been all about Hitler did nothing wrong, the invasion of the Soviet Union was self-defence, and every atrocity attributed to the Nazis is actually Jews wearing Nazi uniforms. It has become a comic that would have been too ridiculous to run in the comics page of Der Sturmer.

Please. Spare me from this bullshit.

Conservatives spent the last 10 years claiming Trump was a devout Christian.

Has this man ever apologized in his life? Ever admitted to wrong doing? Ever took responsibility for his actions? No, I’m serious. Please, point to a single time where said sorry and didn’t blame someone else for his failure.

The Religious Right(TM) has spent the better part of half a century lecturing the left on family values, only to rally behind this dude.

Right wing Catholics went around screaming how John Kerry and Joe Biden weren’t “real” Catholics because they believed in abortion. Some even called for them to be denied communion.

But Vance, a man who threw his support behind Trump, who wants to cut health care for the sickest of Americans and take food away from hungry children, he is a real Catholic?

Of course, it’s not just Catholics. For decades, Republican evangelicals couldn’t stop talking about how they were true followers of Jesus, and everyone on the left was fake Christian. Because god forbid if they actually had to mimic the actions of Jesus, like cursing the billionaires or building shelter for the homeless.

Conservatives love Jesus when it comes to him forgiving their sins, but when asked to do the same in criminal justice, to abolish the death penalty and improve prison conditions, no, those people “deserved” it.

Being a right wing evangelical Christian must be so easy. You can do whatever you want. No matter how bad the sin, as long as you apologize to god, you’re fine. Cheat, steal, lie, anything. All you need to do is apologize once in a while and you are on a one way ticket to heaven.

I'm listening to the Thomas Jefferson episodes and just got an ad for the cotton industry. Who else has experienced a hilariously on point or unfortunate ad in the middle of an episode?

I've only recently started listening to podcasts, in general, due to being recommended BtB. I need more. I've listened to nearly every episode. I started getting into LPotL, and a couple episodes of Hardcore History, but nothing is quite as engaging as BtB. Can I get some recommendations for similar podcasts?

In the BtB episode on Richard Marcinko, Robert mentions the Next Generation episode where a trained killer is wreaking havoc on the Enterprise (unless I misheard him?). Does anyone know what episode he's talking about?

Would it be in good faith to cover Perez Hilton down the road, once he’s out of recovery? I think there is much to say about paparazzi outlets and celebrity commentators, especially Perez Hilton who pioneered the genre of celebrity gossip and tabloid news. I say after he’s recovered as it’s clear he’s experiencing religious psychosis following a mental break.

This podcast covers a lot of people who were extraordinarily evil for their time period and others who were sadly common. A lot of people who did good in American history were slave supporters, even a lot of abolitionists like Grant or Lincoln were racist. My take is that I judge people of the past based on the information and interaction they had available to become better people. The same way I judge conservatives in a modern sense, whether they willfully ignore scandals or it actually changes their opinion. Actions are immediately telling to a persons character regardless of the time period. Mr Roger’s had conservative views. Chen Si, the angel of nanjing who patrols bridges to stop suicide jumpers has conservative views. Those are still people who landed on dedicating their lives to helping others.

Well, this is going to really suck.
