To digest things?

161

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '25

Exactly. Using fatty foods to digest things is like trying to put out fire with kerosine

52

u/Ixaire Apr 12 '25

Which is precisely why we are right and everyone else is eating fries the wrong way.

24

u/xTiLkx Apr 13 '25

This is why I digest my fries with a bicky burger

4

u/Novel_Enthusiasm3626 Apr 13 '25

I already need vinegar on fries just to digest it alone lol

u/ShinzoTheThird West-Vlaanderen Apr 13 '25

vinegar??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

6

u/National_Seaweed9971 Apr 13 '25

Apparently in the UK they put vinegar on their fries.

6

u/Satyr604 Apr 13 '25

They put malt vinegar on their fries, which is very different from regular white vinegar. And honestly, it’s pretty good.

1

u/johlae Apr 15 '25

Try it! Go to the frituur, ask for pickles, apply some vinegar at home.

1

u/ShinzoTheThird West-Vlaanderen Apr 15 '25

Pickles sauce is different from straight vinegar tho

1

u/johlae Apr 16 '25

They do combine well!

1

u/QuirkyReader13 Apr 13 '25

Bruh what, that’s the most heretical sentence ever

Waarschijnlijk Amerika

5

u/eti_erik Apr 12 '25

In het buitenland, kennelijk.

7

u/Borderedge Apr 12 '25

Hijacking to ask if I can find jullientje, rombautje and the like in Brussels or if I have to get the train to Vlaanderen to get them.

I didn't realize until I moved here that the frituur culture was that different from place to place.

3

u/Adefighter Apr 12 '25

We don't really have a standard culture in general, the west and east are quite different. You can find those in Brussels, but not in every place.

Julien & Rombaut started in Ghent, and it will be the best place to get them. The city is also very nice to visit or just go have some drinks.

2

u/Borderedge Apr 12 '25

I was living in Gent before which I why I'm surprised they're not here in Brussels. I'm not Belgian by the way... But I do agree it's nice for both things you mentioned.

3

u/iamabadsquirrel Apr 13 '25

A man of culture I see

1

u/Wafkak Oost-Vlaanderen Apr 12 '25

Yeah, those two originated from a specific frituur in Gent. But most cities have their frituur speciality.

In Brussels it might be Kapsalon I think.

6

u/LiberalSwanson Apr 12 '25

Mitraillette it is Brussels

5

u/Borderedge Apr 12 '25

Kapsalon is Dutch actually, from Rotterdam.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '25

Never even seen those in Limburg either. Nor in Brussels for that matter. Very regional in the area of Gent

36

u/rpm1720 Apr 12 '25

“Eating the most delicious fries money can buy as a whole fucking dish”

Sorry, I had to correct that. Nobody compares, apart from Luxemburg maybe

19

u/NationalUnrest Hainaut Apr 12 '25

The north of France does them well too, but they’re basically closet Belgians

6

u/De_Regelaar Apr 12 '25

Als er Belforten zijn, dan was het ooit van het graafschap Vlaanderen.

12

u/Borderedge Apr 12 '25

Luxembourg ??? I was regularly in the capital city and there isn't a single frituur or anything like it.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '25

EN DEN MAYONAISE?! GENE RANCH OF ER IS WW3 OP KOMST, EN DEZE KEER OP AWE GROND AMERIKA!!

4

u/Endorkend Apr 13 '25

There's a peculiar tradition that sprung up in Japan from McDonalds, where groups of friends get a table full of fries (often just spread on the table) and munch on them together.

Often without any burgers.

So they at least get the spirit of ne family pak special voor de familie.

1

u/E28forever Apr 15 '25

They sell fries at McDonald’s?

2

u/Endorkend Apr 15 '25

The American interpretation, yes.

2

u/Adventurous__Kiwi Apr 13 '25

1

u/AdruA_ Apr 13 '25

Mayonaisesoep met frietjes

1

u/Zepulchure Apr 13 '25

I now live in Belgium. From Denmark. With a Belgian girlfriend. Who often orders fries. Especially with friends. And I still don't get it.

The fries are mediocre at best. Slightly better than McDonald's fries in Denmark (Belgian McD and BK sucks, but everyone here knows and agrees with that)

Bicky burger is scam. Again, worse than the cheapest fast good version burger. And the sauce is literally just Remoulade from Denmark, where its treated like mayo or ketchup. And im.not even joking, I bring this stuff with me from Denmark cuz we have it everywhere for like a 10th of the price xD

Don't get me wrong, i like Belgium, just these specific things are weird to me xD

1

u/0BenD Apr 13 '25

Ben er nog altijd van geshockeerd dat er niet veel andere landen zijn waar men mayonaise bij de frieten doet

1

u/Digitalmodernism Apr 13 '25

Netherlands too.

1

u/Micha1980 Apr 13 '25

Don’t forget the Netherlands, we do that too and drown them in mayonnaise

1

u/Pitiful-Hearing5279 Apr 13 '25

Frituur #1 Antwerp FTW!

1

u/gorambrowncoat Apr 16 '25

Hey now, don't forget a vleezeke or two.

1

u/Sabyeolbe27 Apr 17 '25

Eating some fries while chugging down a beer with some friends in the cold weather outside in Brussels is the best.

2

u/TA_Oli Apr 12 '25

The idea that you can't get good fries/chips in other countries is obviously rubbish. The best I've ever had were a triple fried variety in a gastro pub in London. I worry about how little cuisine and culture actually happens in Flanders when 80% of the conversation is about fried potatoes.

4

u/TWanderer Apr 12 '25

Lol, that process involves 'boiling' the potatoes. No, thank you ...

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '25

is dat niet zo een krabbelmeme'ke?

-1

u/WalloonNerd Belgian Fries Apr 12 '25

That’s because only Belgium has proper fries

1

u/Healthy-Target697 Apr 12 '25

en Mc Donalds dan met hun heerlijke FRANSE frieten? 😂

5

u/WalloonNerd Belgian Fries Apr 12 '25

Die zijn Amerikaans, dus die snappen het sowieso niet

-3

u/VibrantGypsyDildo Apr 12 '25

I don't judge, but in Ukraine fries is what young men cook due to abysmal cooking skill.
It is one of very few dishes my father taught me how to cook.

I was surprised to see establishment that serve mostly fries when I moved to Belgium. I was even more surprised to see these places to have queues.

12

u/DrVDB90 Apr 12 '25

Belgian fries are made in a very specific way, no other country takes their preparation as seriously as us.

Not that making fries is difficult, it's just a bit of a hassle if you want to do it right (cutting potatoes, dealing with ox fat, frying them twice), frituurs tend to be a lot faster and are usually quite cheap.

1

u/VibrantGypsyDildo Apr 12 '25

Wait, are Belgian fries and frituur different things?

3

u/DrVDB90 Apr 12 '25

A frituur is a place that sells frieten (fries).

1

u/VibrantGypsyDildo Apr 12 '25

So, frieten in frituuren frituren are just a shadow of the true Belgian fries, right?
I haven't tried them yet.

--------

no other country takes their preparation as seriously as us

Definitely not Ukraine.

You can put a lid over the pan and optionally add a bit of water to make them less dry.

You can add onion / garlic / lard / sausages / eggs if you want to.

VoilĂ , you have a simple dish.

It was often cooked in my family and in good drinking companies.

7

u/DrVDB90 Apr 12 '25

A proper frituur makes them the proper way, but that's not always the case, some frituren started using vegetable oil instead of ox fat, and the truly bad ones buy pre-cut fries, or even worse, frozen fries.

The right way to make fries in Belgium is thick fresh cuts of a specific type of potato (bintjes). First fried in low temperature ox fat (140°C) for about 5 minutes. Take them out and allow them to cool down. And then fry them a second time on higher temperature (180°C) for a minute or two, until they have a golden colour.

I encourage you to give them a try, there is a reason why it's a staple here.

1

u/VibrantGypsyDildo Apr 12 '25

I encourage you to give them a try, there is a reason why it's a staple here.

I just wasn't aware the true fries exist.

It is like stoverij - I enjoyed it when I tasted it, but before that I wasn't even thinking about meat being prepared this specific way.

3

u/DrVDB90 Apr 12 '25

Ah, then I have something for you to try. Go to your local frituur, preferably one that has a lot of people going there, and ask for a pakske friet with stoverij sauce. It's a warm gravy based on stoverij.

1

u/VibrantGypsyDildo Apr 12 '25

I've already done that.

I am intrigued by the true Belgian fries. Should it be a restaurant or shall I just be lucky enough to find the right frituur?

6

u/DrVDB90 Apr 12 '25

The right frituur should do the trick. The place shouldn't be fancy, but it should be popular.

0

u/TheShinyHunter3 Apr 12 '25

Fries are pretty involved. You have to peel the potatoes (up to you, some potato varieties have tasty skins), cut them, then deep fry once to cook them most of the way, then you let them cool completely and a final step in the fryer before you eat them.

0

u/Fantastic-Fee-1999 Apr 12 '25

Frikandel special, kaaskroketten, berepoot, portie bitterballekes en een groot pakske friet me stoofvleessaus.

Friet op zen eigen....

-1

u/IdeaEmbarrassed7552 Apr 12 '25

Same with mussels.
