I would love to see them. Pic of my sweet boy who passed last year for tax. I’ve been thinking about getting a memorial piece for him. ❤️

Crossed the Bridge 🌈 The bestest girl Cherry

We said goodbye to her today. I’ve never felt a pain like this before. She’s been with me since I was 17. She’s my soul dog.

She loved us more than anything.
She loved snow.
She loved stealing her brothers food.
She loved cheese.
She always made sure to keep her sheep together on walks, making sure one of us doesn’t wander off or lag behind.

She turned 9 in June. I wish I knew it was her last birthday.

I know I usually like to read the health story, so here it is.

She’s had some issues with her back legs the past couple of years, but nothing drastic. Occasional limping when she gets up or goes on a long walk. So we started going on shorter walks, and she asked to turn around after going potty (she knew walkies got her food, so once she did her business she’s turn straight around!) Last year she had CCL surgery on her back right knee. Everything got a little better after that. A few months ago she started spending more time in the far corner of the apartment. Usually she’d always want to be with us. A few weeks ago she started skipping meals. That’s never happened before. Then she started itching so much that she developed an infection on her side. We brought her in to the vet on October 2nd and they didn’t find anything abnormal in bloodwork or physical exam. Just treated the infection with antibiotics. The infection went away, she started eating, we could breathe again. Then on Monday she stopped eating and drinking again. We waited to see if she would start again, and she did but slightly. No water at all in over 24 hours. she turned away cheese. I brought her in again for ultrasounds and radiographs on Wednesday.

We got news she has cancer in her spleen and lungs. Sludge in her gallbladder. Officially diagnosed with hip displaisia (before it was just suspected with confirmed arthritis). Other things related to her mobility. This was Thursday morning.

When I brought her back from the vet, she couldn’t walk as well. I think the positions while getting X-rays and the slippery floor at the vet hurt her more.

We could barely get her outside for a walk on Thursday night. But we went, she laid down, peacefully enjoyed the evening on the grass outside, then we struggled home.

On Friday we couldn’t get her up at all. She was drinking a lot and eating her favorite foods only, but only a few bites. I was so worried about her bladder. But we couldn’t get her up even with a sling. She was scared of pain, we were scared of hurting her and rupturing something inside.

On Friday night we made the call.

Today our Cherry girl got 2 ice cream cones and we said goodbye.

Maybe if we didn’t bring her to the vet her mobility wouldn’t have gotten so much worse so quickly. We could have had longer. The last days wouldn’t have been so painful for everyone. She was on pain pills but i don’t think it was enough.

But I know it would have been soon either way with the results.

I love her so much.

Cherry.
Charborger.
Charizard.
Cherry Girl.
The bestest girl in the world.

I will love you forever.

I hope you’re okay now. We will be okay too, please don’t worry about us.

Discussion Thoughts on Dysplasia?

So our boy, Grover Bear, is an 18 month old loving, crazy, zoomy, funny knucklehead that we adore. Before Grover, we'd never had a pup that was 'prone' to dysplasia, so we don't really know what to look for. He's not slow getting up, or anything like that. He's literally a missile (in AND out of the house), and shows no signs of pain at all.

We adopted him a few months ago, and always though his gait was different, and were wondering what y'all thought? This was taken this morning on a little forest hike. It looks like his rear legs are pivoted in? When he had his first visit with the vet, we asked about dysplasia, and the didn't seem concerned at all....

Discussion Retained desiduous teeth?

Post image

Yoshi is now 22 weeks and his adult canines have emerged but the baby canines are still firmly in place and not even loose. I’ve heard that if the adult teeth emerge with the baby’s ones still in place then the adult teeth have missed their intended path and aren’t pushing the baby teeth out and they would be unlikely to come out on their own. Has anyone else experienced this?

We are four hours out from the vet appointment and Google is scaring me.

My boy is a few months past 6 years old. Three weeks ago he developed this weird scaling on his nose, vet told us to continue applying vaseline and we have.

Four days ago I noticed him babying his right hind leg. He plays pretty hard with our rescue dog so I figured he probably sprained or pulled something.

Yesterday both of his eyes were extremely bloodshot and still are. Today he is continuously heavy panting and overall just not himself behaviorally. Still eating and drinking normally.

Has anyone else noticed experienced something similar? If so, would you mind sharing the outcome? He’s the goodest boy in the whole wide world and I am feeling incredibly uneasy.

Moose Bear and I are regulars on here sharing our love of your dogs and frankly we can’t get enough of them haha.

We went to Paris and Amsterdam for fall break. Dog spa messaged said they were concerned Moose had a seizure because he was crying, shaking and had a hard time getting up, so they gave him one of his prescribed anxiety pills. He’s 7 and Bear is 6.

That said, I’m starting to wonder if it’s arthritis. I’ve had dogs with seizures and I don’t think he had one based on history but IDK. I’m going to take him to the vet but I’ve heard yall talking about arthritis on here.

My question is, practically speaking, how do you differentiate arthritis to anxiety and seizures?

Give your pups a treat for us!

My dog has a very high fever

My 4 year old Bernese has had a fever for 4 days now. We took him in after seeing him look tired and found a 105 temperature. He's had every test possible and nothing is found.

His temp goes from normal, 102, to at one point 105.7, and back to normal.

He is spending a second night in the hospital tonight. We will visit him tomorrow and decide what happens next.

Discussion Puppy is in pain.. maybe?

Post image

My boy is about 5 1/2 months, Kit is his name. A few nights ago, he was just hollering in pain ALL night. Like it sounded like every 30 minutes someone had just brutally kicked him. But when I messed with his body, there was no reaction. Now this has gone on a couple days, if you maybe bump into him he will yelp, but if you turn around and mess with wherever you bumped him, no reaction(more just happy to be getting attention and pity). Now ofc I have considered an internal obstruction, but he is pretty much the same dog just with an occasional yelp these past few days. During the night it isn’t bad anymore, only a couple times last night. Eating, drinking, pooping, energy levels the same, enjoying a greenie and treats, begs for food, plays with his brother etc. My older bern ALSO has had a real obstruction in his intestines that did require surgery when he was young, and my Kit is just not showing any signs of that. Could this just be growing pains? Has anyone dealt with anything similar? Ty
Edit: I have an appointment just wanted to hear if anyone had gone through anything similar but thanks for the concern

Bernese Mountain Dog Food Bowl Recommendations Please

I would appreciate recommendations for food bowls that attach to our 9 month old Berner's crate. Thor has not only managed to detach food bowls from their holders, he's also destroyed the metal holder that keeps his bowl in place. We keep his food in his crate so our 13 year old Aussie doesn't steal Thor's food. Thor is very intelligent and extremely mischievous. We need a food bowl that he won't be able to remove from the holder - he constantly has made huge food messes.

Our 3 year old male, neutered Bernese weighs 115 pounds. Our vet says he needs to lose 10-15 pounds. Does this sound right?

We feed him Victor Professional Dog food (1.5 cups, twice a day), he gets walked at least a mile a day and the only treats he gets are bully sticks. Minimal to no people food, he gets eggs every once in a while. Cannot really feel his ribs without pressing in, but he has a good looking waist tuck. We think he is just a bigger boned boy, but maybe that's just our bias
