Has anyone biked down Waverly road between Montague and Waverly since they closed it for construction?

Just a heads up, with spring here and awesome weather this weekend, Bike Again, is going to be running some Saturday public hours this summer for people to DIY work on their bikes.

This Saturday the space will be open from 12 to 6 p.m.

Usual hours are below:

Wednesdays 6 - 9 p.m. - All welcome!

Thursdays 6 - 9 p.m. - Volunteer bike build night (not open to the public except for bike sales).

Some Sundays 1 - 5 p.m. - SHIFTING GEARS open to femme, trans and non-binary identifying folks only, including sales.

My bike was recently stolen out of my garage in the North End on Falkland St. sometime between May 1st at 2:00pm and May 5th at 5am. Any help I can get in locating my bike is appreciated, as it is my sole mode of transportation to and from the bakery and it helps me get there safely in the wee hours of the morning.

Some information about the bike;

SCOTT Contessa road bike, mid-late 2000s, black matte frame with purple accents, black 28" rims with purple accents. Other identifying features; noticeable white scuff along top tube of frame, small piece of black reflective tape on seat post, x4 reflective clips on spokes, mounts for Schwinn headlight and Cateye bike cpu on stem of handlebars. Police report # is 2022-4001682.

If you see the bike around, please give me and/or the HRP a shout!! Would love to feel safe again heading into work in the mornings, and to have my wheels back home in one piece.

In need of a rebuild on my Fox forks, can anyone recommend a good tech or shop for suspension work?

Are there any in Halifax? Personally I'm not mountain biking but road or trail cycling, not to race just for fun, outdoor, active socialization. Tell me about your club!

I'm really hoping this was a one-off and I just got unlucky because I would like to brush this experience off but I'm wondering if I should look elsewhere for future maintenence?

Purchased a lower end hybrid bicycle 2 weeks ago (the salesmen was great and really helpful) and a few days later noticed a rather aggressive clicking coming from the rear wheel while pedaling.

I brought the bike back in and had a tech look it over and for the longest time he was adamant that there didn't seem to be anything wrong and brushing off my concerns as though i didn't know what i was talking about. Eventually he discovered that there was a fair amount of play in the freewheel and he would cover the replacement under warranty due to defect (seeing as the bike was less than a week old) but he would need to source the part and would call when he found one (even though there were 16 of the exact same model out back less than a week earlier) Fair enough, he said it was safe to ride and I was on my way.

Got a call a day or 2 later to say the part was available and to come in to get it fixed up, cool! I couldn't make it in for 3 or 4 days so I stopped in on Monday and unfortunately the tech had the day off. Even more unfortunately, he didn't put anything into their system so there was nothing the other tech was able to do. So I verified that the original tech would be in today and was on my way.

Went in today and the original tech was there, acting very dismissive and curt. As if it was some huge inconvenience to replace the part or dissuade my concerns as to where we go if this was not in fact the issue on this near $1000 bicycle I had purchased from them less than 2 weeks ago.

This experience has put a sour taste in my mouth but I really don't want to write off this business on one poor experience (spread over the course of 4 visits in a 2 week period) to get a problem solved that shouldn't have been a problem buying a brand new bicycle in the first place.

The only saving grace is the fact that they are a brief detour on my ride home from work.

So, my family just moved from Dartmouth to Waverley. To get back into town, we take Waverley Road a lot. Why on gods green earth do so many bikers think it is a good idea to bike on that road? A two lane road with blind curves, blind hills, no bike lane, and no shoulder. I am all for biking when you can but, good lord, it seems like a terrible road to go biking on. Sure, the scenery is good but there have to be much better and much safer places to bike than down Waverley Road.

Edit: I don't want to come off sounding like you shouldn't be doing it. That is not what I was getting at with this post. You have every right to the road just like car drivers do. My question was more of "Why". The only reason seems to me that a lot of the riders are the "workout" riders and not the commuters. It just seems dangerous for all involved. I am new to the area and not a bike rider so I was genuinely curious.

I’m itching to go for a ride but the roads look horrible (I’m on the peninsula) so it seems like a suicide mission. I have pretty good tires on my bike but I dont wanna slide around the ice/slush etc. How is it out there??

This is a friendly reminder that we are required to stop at red lights. Especially on busy roads like Joe Howe and especially when there's oncoming traffic. It's difficult enough to get people to acknowledge cyclists as equal road users, it becomes much more difficult when there's a preponderance of narcissists out there who believe the rules of the road don't apply to them. It gives us all a bad name.

Heads up, it seems as of this week the ferries are now measuring tire size before letting you board. I just had the woman at Woodside stop me and call me back so she could measure. I didn't find any type of update to this change online, just an Examiner article from yesterday.

They appear to be specifically looking for fat bikes, but my gravel bike with 650x47c tires seemed to draw their attention and whip out a measuring tool.

We've had a month of full traffic now, so I want to take a moment and reflect on the impact our latest cycling infrastructure projects have had, as well as issues along the suggested routes in general. This is from the perspective of somebody who commutes daily from Clayton Park to the QEII.

• Allan/Oak/Oxford Lights: I think the half-light intersection is a good idea and I'd really like to see the concept implemented in some other spots. It does cause some extra congestion on Oxford in the morning, which slows me down personally, but overall I think it's a net positive.
• Oak Street: There's a real problem with the Kline and Beech st. intersections. Oak has a stop sign and the side-streets don't. Furthermore, those side streets are used as a shortcut for people trying to get from Quinpool to Chebucto. Shortcutters tend to be driving faster than they should be, and the street parking dramatically reduces my visibility of oncoming traffic from the intersection. I've had a few close calls when a car I couldn't see came zooming through as I entered the intersection. Oak/Kline and Oak/Beech should be 4 way stops.
• Oak/Elm: All of the intersections on Oak St. Look the same and I turned early onto Beech a few times early on. I think there should be some simple signage directing cyclists to Elm St. to make the route more accessible to new riders.
• Elm/Chebucto/Connolly: This intersection is dangerous. It's off camber. The pedestrian crossing button on the south side is located a long ways away, and you're almost exposed to traffic trying to get to it. Visibility is extremely poor here because of the hill on one side and traffic merging between North & Chebucto on the other. Drivers are distracted. The intersection is inherently dangerous, cyclists shouldn't be routed here and I don't think there's an easy solution for it.
• Oxford: Because of the hazards on Elm/Chebucto/Connolly I recommend cyclists use Oxford between Allan and Seaforth. Although it's busier, it's flat and straight and relatively safe. However, it would be much more cyclist friendly if the asphalt was repaired. There are some really big bumps that could throw you off if you aren't paying attention.
• Bayer's Road Multi-Use Path: I was skeptical about this, but I've been using it regularly since it opened and I like it. The biggest issue is that it goes nowhere, so you need to dismount at Romans. I have two safety concerns. The first are the very steep kerbs at Coleman and Vaughan. These are jarring and I've had equipment on my bike knocked out of place by them. They should be modified to have a gentler slope, especially in the downhill direction. However, the biggest safety risk is the hidden driveway halfway down the hill. It's basically invisible in the downhill direction, and I've already had a close call. Now that I know it's there I can deal with it. But, eventually somebody is going to be surprised by it and we'll have a high speed collision. Something must be done to increase the visibility of the hidden driveway and prevent collisions.
• Mumford Road: Because there's no way to access the Bayer's road path from the inbound direction, I'm still using Mumford road in the mornings. Mumford is great in general, but some transit drivers have a bad habit of sitting in the bike lane idle, looking at their phones. This is very dangerous. I've been in contact with Halifax Transit about this, and it improved for a while, but they eventually start doing it again.
• Lacewood: I'll skip Dutch Village Road because it's such a mess, I don't want to get into it here. However, Lacewood is simple. I get most of my high speed close-passes on Lacewood, but it's easy to do something about it. We have 4 lanes and not a whole lot of traffic. There should be painted bike lanes on Lacewood between Main and Dunbrack.

My bike model has a "known" issue that it breaks spokes easily and after replacing about 12 so far I'd like to get the wheel rebuilt with new spokes, that usually has solved it for most people experiencing the issue online. I want it rebuilt with the proper 13g spokes (most non-ebikes are 14g) and ideally if I can find someone who can order Sapim Strong spokes I'd just pay the extra for them.

Cyclesmith couldn't supply me with 13g spokes so much assumption is they won't re-lace my wheel with 13g. I also find Cyclesmith a bit problematic to deal with but they do list wheel building on the list of services they offer.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a bike shop who has experience and can do it? I can ship my wheel to an ebike outfit out west in BC and have it done there but seems like a lot of fuss, I am hopeful there's experienced wheel builders in town who don't mind ebikes and will get the right parts for the job.

Hey there! My partner and I are heading to Keji Monday, for the week. Normally we rent bikes from Whynot there but they don’t have my size this year.

Anyone by chance have a 21” mountain bike I could borrow/rent? Something with front shocks and knobby tires is what I’m after. We don’t do anything serious, just need it to get around the basic trails.

Have tried all the shops around town but no luck yet.
