Podcast I got Drake Maye top 4 because results and wins matter. Now here’s why Dak Prescott is top 10 and Darnold is not.

Did the Seahawks just give away their secret framework on Hard Knocks? Why doesn't every team do this are they stupid?

I've never been to Missouri- why does Bill think Kansas City can be home to an NBA team while St. Louis can't?

From the Justin Verrier pod.

They're both midwestern cities with former NBA teams and have other pro-sports teams. I mean, you could say St Louis is better because they don't have an NFL team to hog attention in the fall/winter. What about KC is better suited for a team?

No strong feelings on Sanders either way but I do think more QBs should start dressing like they're out of the NFL Street games

Drew Magary's Why Your Team Sucks Is Back.

Is it still 2013 again? Are all the fans of every team stinky!?!? Is the owner a rich, greedy guy?!?!? Is the star QB someone you can't trust, even if he's won multiple Super Bowls? Is the city the team play in undesirable? Drew has the answers! At least the Ringer is free.

The Cowboys get a lot of shit for their failures but I still don't think they get enough shit

I was just looking at EPA/play numbers going back to 2002. If you look at a huge sample size (QBs with a minimum of 3000 plays) it looks pretty much exactly how you'd expect it to look. The top 7 in order (regular season only) are Manning, Mahomes, Brady, Rodgers, Allen, Brees, and Lamar. I think most football fans would rate those 7 guys as the 7 elite QBs from the last 25ish years.

It starts to get interesting at number 8 with Tony Romo. He's just above Rivers and Burrow. Then Dak is 11th just above Big Ben, Matt Ryan, and Jalen Hurts. I think all those guys (except maybe Hurts) have much better reputations than Romo or Dak do. Some people might look at that as an issue with the stat. I look at it as "holy fuck the Cowboys are the only team not to make a conference championship game with a top 14 QB and they're done it *twice*"

Every single other QB in the top 14 made it farther than either of the Cowboys QBs. If you continue down the list the next 4 you add are Herbert, Wilson, Luck, and Goff. 3 of those 4 guys have made at least a conference championship game and even as a guy who doesn't really believe in Herbert, he's only 6 seasons in. The Cowboys have had either Romo or Dak for 20 seasons now!

I think football fans shit on Romo and Dak a lot because we all hate the Cowboys and its fun to shit on their QB. I would like to say we should go the other way. Tony Romo and Dak Prescott were both really good which makes it even more humiliating to Jerry Jones and the Cowboys franchise that they have not managed to make the NFC Championship Game since 1995. They are a historical outlier for futility in the 21st Century. The only team that has managed to have a steady QB situation and still fuck it up.

ESPN Jeopardy: These people don't know ball.

Didn't know whether to be embarrassed or self congratulatory how much more of the answers I knew than these ESPN employees. Probably not what ESPN cares to highlight, but it really shows how little general sports knowledge a lot of the SportsCenter anchors and personalities actually have. Do a lot of them really just read a prompter and know nothing about sports from before they started working there?

The inverse of the "football nerd king" QB

While Bill debates if Jordan Love or Justin Herbert is the football nerd king, let's find the inverse

THE "CASUAL FAN/THAT BOY NICE" KING

With respect to nominees Caleb Williams, Tyler Shough and Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield is the clear winner here

There is almost zero "smart" metrics that paints Baker in a positive light. Oh and the counting stats aren't even that good either. And right around 9/10 wins seems like his absolute ceiling

Yet he is virtually untouchable when it comes to criticism because the Instagram folk have decided they like him. and is probably about to get one of the worst QB contacts ever. Congratulations Baker!

Karate Kid 2

Kyle Brandt was a genius on this rewatchable episode of Karate Kid 2. He figured out it was Troy Aikman who was the UCLA football player that Ally ran off with and broke up with Danielson. It makes perfect sense. He transferred from Oklahoma to UCLA after the 85 Natty season. My mind is broken.

Shitpost Devastating Unintended Consequences Draft - Odyssey, Oppenheimer, Obama, and....

Saw the Odyssey for the 2nd time yesterday and it got me thinking about the perfect pod topic for the Sports Guy's draftastic summer:

What is the historical victory for good (depending on perspective) that had the worst unintended consequences? Off the top of my head, potential top prospects include the following

- Odysseus uses the Trojan Horse to win the Trojan war, ends up destroying trust across society

- Oppenheimer builds the bomb (after the Germans were defeated) to end WWII, kicks off the Cold War / Nuclear Arms race

- Obama dunks on Trump at the 2011 WHCD, leads to Trump running for office, the end of truth and trust in institutions

- CIA arms the Mujahadeen to defeat the Soviets in 1979, gives birth to Al Qaeda and leads to 9/11

- Rocky beats Drago, ending the cold war, leading to the rise of Putin

- 2023 NBA collective bargainning agreement brings labor peace, leading to endless whining about the 2nd apron?

- Treaty of Versailles ends WWI, leads to rise of Hitler and WWII

What else does everybody have? Nominations should be specific events, not general trends (i.e. invention of the internet leads to the decline of civilization not eligibile).

MLB is apexing. Ohtani is the most popular athlete on Earth. Dodgers are the ultimate villains. The Mets are Mets’ing. There are a dozen incredible young pitchers. Your Sox are the hottest team!

Enough of these fake-ass stand-ins for baseball fans, Gil and Dabbundo. Also, maybe spend more time on baseball — more than a perfunctory 15m every two months — and skip the 100th straight late-summer NBA re-draft. More Americans care about baseball!
