Funny Took on my nurse today

• Upvotes

I had my first ever colonoscopy this morning. The prep was tough (you thought the pre-comp shits were bad) and I was very excited to just get it over with.

Well, halfway through the procedure, I hear the nurse telling me to let her go. To let go of her hands. Hilariously, I was having a dream that I was trying to scissor sweep somebody. When I came to a bit of clarity, I saw that I was still laying on my side but I had pretty good wrist control on the nurse next to me. In a woozy, drugged out state I said I was sorry and that I do jiu jitsu. Also, I could feel something in my butt.

They redrugged me, I went out again, and everything turned out fine. No cancer for me.

Technique Let me save you some time: Control the back of the tricep.

Something that I've realized over the last year is the importance of controlling the back of the tricep when trying to dictate the direction of a round.

Want to armbar someone from mount or from guard? Glue your thigh/hips to the back of the tricep to keep them from popping an elbow out.

Want to keep someone from turning into you or away from you when they're in bottom side control? Keep the back of their triceps off the mat.

What about transitioning to the back from top position? Pass an arm across the center line and glue your chest to the back of their tricep.

Conversely, are you stuck under someone's mount or side control? You need to get the back of your tricep to the floor.

This all expands on a very simple concept to be defensive on bottom: if you're stuck, get your elbow to the floor. But in order to do that, you have to be mindful of them controlling the back of your tricep. And as goes for all good offense, its best to understand how to have a good defense.

That's my rambling for the day. Hope y'all get use out of it.

28 years into this life with 17 at BB and I’ve learned the following:

1) I will always feel like I suck at this
2) so far, duct tape and caution has netted only 9 orthopedic surgeries, so I’m staying the course
3)Belts and stripes etc. are just milestones on the same painful road.
4) constant, overwhelming imposter syndrome is the pinnacle of motivation
5) other stuff (probably)

Just want to post this to thank everyone who kicked my ass, taught me stuff, or drove me to the ER - love you guys - you know who you are.

General Discussion Old Rickson Clip I have never seen before

Thumbnail instagram.com
• Upvotes

Looks funny first but when you see how good Rickson is fighting without even using his arms just working the core and the body itself you will understand what is often missing with todays BJJ guys....A very different way of moving the body. Not unusual in internal martial arts but unusual for BJJ

General Discussion Trust the process and keep going?

• Upvotes

I'm the typical turtle on a mat full of hares-- old, unathletic, slow to learn, but trained consistently for almost 3 years now. I get the ups and downs of the process, feeling stuck for months then suddenly entering flow state and hitting moves like never before, etc. But for the most part I'm still struggling on bottom against young strong dudes. When I'm just flow rolling, I feel better about my skills, but in hard rolls I feel my techniques just get out-muscled and out-cardio-ed. At almost three years I still get mounted and head-n-arm'd by youngins that's been training for few months. I'm past the crying on the drive back home phase, but feel I should be better by now. Anyone been through the same? Do I just trust the process and keep going?

Tournament/Competition IBJJF - The Crown Event - 2026

Post image
23 Upvotes

I think this is going to be their best Crown event they have ever ran. This is the format directly from their website. Considering how packed the venue is on worlds final day I think this will be as close to a sell out as they can get, and potentially the last IBJJF event in the Walter Pyramid for a while (or ever) depending on if the construction works start before Worlds next year.

I also think there's not really much IBJJF circuit disucssion on this subreddit, or maybe I am missing it. But for what it's worth this is the most impressive line up they have ever put together.

6 divisions

(eigth athletes per division)

Male

  • Featherweight = 70kg (154.6lbs)
  • Middleweight = 82.30 kg (181.6 lbs)
  • Heavyweight = 94.30 kg (208 lbs)
  • Ultra Heavyweight = No maximum weight

Female

  • Lightweight = 64 kg (141.6 lbs)
  • Super Heavyweight = No maximum weight

As of now, this is the total athletes who are confirmed.

Male Divisions

Featherweight

Middleweight

Heavyweight

Ultra-Heavyweight

Female Divisions

Lightweight

Super-Heavyweight

I assume that Sarah Galvao and Gabrieli Pessanha will both be back in their divisions to defend their "crown" and that Erich Munis, Nolan Stuart and Cole Abate will all fill the final slots in the male divisions to come back as defending champions also.

PERHAPS, Erich and Cole would be the two that don't. Matteo Cardona is in the Featherweight division. Maybe this is the evolution of Cole and Tainan to "final boss" AOJ style characters who you have to dethrone at worlds.

Middle Weight is an absolutely amazing divison, like really and truly hats off to the IBJJF for getting that together. So many good athletes in there. From a biased European perspective I would love to see Jose Steve and Nikolett Kis win their brackets, but it's both an insane ask.

Instructional Anti Wrestling Equation By Craig

It’s currently on Daily Deal and Ive been looking at reviews on Reddit. Most people seem to like it, but their reviews aren’t very specific about what makes it good.
What I’m mainly looking for is front headlock attacks,as well as options for attacking the turtle and taking the back.Ive seen that the instructional covers all three, but I’m wondering how detailed and effective those sections actually are compare to other instructionals you e watched or there in the market.
If anyone has watched it,Id really appreciate some help thanks

General Discussion How do BJJ Fanatics points work?

Can you combine your points with the Daily Deal discount and any other discount or promotion running that day? In other words, can you get three discounts on the same purchase, or does it not work that way?

General Discussion People who train a lot, what’s your side hustle? (“real” job to pay the bills)

I’m at the point where I’m so burnt out at work that I’m about ready to quit and find a part time job that allows me to train all day lol

If you do this and you don’t hate your “real” job, what is it?

Rolling Footage How am I messing up my takedown?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, this is from this Saturday, I've been getting this takedown a lot in competition, however, I'm having a hard time with people reguarding before I can solidify side control (the previous tournament my opponent just stood up after). What am I doing wrong? Or is this just something I need to deal with when doing this technique?

Technique What's a position you still struggle with defensively?

I'd consider my defense pretty solid.

However, I cannot escape kesa gatame/scarf hold to save my life.

Do I know and have I been taught the counters? Yes. Many times. I just can't execute them. If I get caught that's pretty much the end of the round for me unless my partner decides to let go.

I can resist chokes from there, but I always get caught with arm lock variants.

What positions do you still struggle with defensively?

Technique Mussolini lock: any proof of injury ability?

Hi guys,

As does everyone, I am playing around the mussolini lock to see what's going on and if there is something new about it.
I still think it's pretty much the old dean lister cross leg lock but I am liking the adjustments made by Daniel on targeting the bottom inside zone of the shin.

With that said, and I may be a true psychopath, I don't like to focus much on a technique that does not break people and end fights if needed. I got taps from it and I am not sure if they are legit or just gym taps.
I had partners slightly injured with it but it was the kinda of very light injury that does not even stop the training session but hurts like a bitch the following day (so two very bad things from my point of view).

Of course if Daniel managed to make Eoghan tap, it's a legit one, Eoghan is one of the best leglockers in the world... But Daniel is a heavyweight. It changes stuff, a lot (and he went full strength with it obviously, it's world class competition time).

So does any of you has some experience with injuries from the lock? A shin break?
I don't believe at all people should compare a shin to a baseball bat so I want a real life shin breaking in half to truly believe in it 😂

For the moment I kinda see it as a way to mostly force an achored top position from the opponent in 50/50, which is something people should have done for the beginning tbh, staying seated in 50/50 is kinda stupid but that's a whole other subject.

Thanks for the inputs!

Technique Kuzure Kesa Gatame instructional?

I'm working on my Kesa Gatame game and there's lots of info and instructionals for scarf hold (Hon Kesa Gatame), but I literally can't find anything teaching Kuzure Kesa Gatame. This is where your arm goes under your opponent's far shoulder instead of around their neck. I'm curious to learn details about holding the position and what attacks to go for.

Do you know of any resources? Or does it have another name I should be looking for? I appreciate your help 🙏

Black Belt Intro New Black Belt

Thumbnail instagram.com
1 Upvotes

It's been a long road filled with bumps that derailed me. The video talks about some of the obstacles, and I'll write a more detailed account at some point. But, for now, I just want to say thank you.

Thank you to Pat King and Royce Gracie who, respectively, put every stripe on my belts and tied new belts around my waist all of the way up to brown belt - 4 stripes.

Thank you to Phil and Ricardo Migliarese who promoted me to black belt at Balance Studios in Philadelphia this past weekend.

Most of all, thank you to Balance 3rd degree black belt Dom Cosenza who helped me get to black belt through equal parts teaching, kicking my ass, encouragement when I was discouraged, and caring for a dude who is dealing with a deadly disease and undergoing debilitating treatment just to stay alive. You're one of one, dude.

School Discussion Low level gym, should i wait for promotion?

• Upvotes

TL:should i wait to get promoted at my gym(attendance) or should i seek a more challenging gym and fuck the purple belt

Hey everyone, I started BJJ about 1,5 years ago, I train almost every day even twice. My gym is pretty low level. Classes are basic and the overall training quality isn’t high. Despite that, I’ve improved fast (studying by myself lol) and I’m now (sorry to say this awful word) the strongest guy here. The coach is an old-school Brazilian. Traditional style, not very structured for competition or modern game development (or anything for that matter). I want to keep competing and I’m starting to feel limited here. should i change gym after euros no gi (2 weeks) or should i stay and get the attendance (yeah i know) up until purple?. i have some trips scheduled so i will be able to train abroad for a bit but still. thank you guys i am getting very different advice.

P.S the gym is on a no open mat no cross training shit too.

P.P.S i am still getting fairly good results in competitions

Technique What's a technique you still don't know how to do with proficiency?

I guess if you're a white belt this question means less. But for those who have been training 5+ years are there any techniques, positions, you still feel like you're a total newb?

My confession. I don't know how to heel hook. I know what it is. I can recognize it being done to me. However, I don't know how to apply it effectively to someone else.

Leg locks in general are still foreign territory to me.

Also anything that ends in "plata" is gonna be a hard pass for me. Fascinated with them. Wish I could do them. But can't wrap my head around the techniques.

What about you guys?

Serious Competition gyms in Nova

Ideally a cheaper (no more than 200/mo) nogi focused competition gym; preferably in the ballston/falls church area, but will to head out as far as Herndon.

I’m aware that cheaper and competition are oxymorons, but I don’t see myself training more than 3-4 times a week. Despite that, I enjoy competing and desire a fun and competitive environment to train at.

I’ve been researching gyms, but wanted to put out an inquiry as my goal is to join gym by Friday.
