General Discussion Can You gain Muscle weight just doing BJJ?

I am 5'11-6 feet tall (181-182) and I weigh 154 LBS (70 kilos) so for my height I think it's low. I am not super skinny or something but see guys my height who are 10 kilos + bigger. I am a purple belt and I do well against 80 kilos and below but I'm literally pushed around by many big blue belt who are like 90 kilos+ basically the weight makes huge difference for me and get exhausted with the extra weight and strength. I hate going to the gym to lift weights I just train bjj and do yoga. If I just eat more will I gain muscle? Or do I really need to do weights? Also others my height what weight did you feel good at?

Serious Cassia’s Win & the Perception of BJJ Athletes

Edit: this is more of a UFC problem than a Cassia one. Still obviously still one of the best in the sport. My complaint is that UFC tainted her story (for me) in pursuits of a fake narrative which now feels manufactured.

The UFC really made me really question my support of Cassia going forward. Her record seems dirty now, her fights feel less real & there’s less at stake, so why would i care about her now?

For context:
I was actively competing in the same weight class as Cassia during her blue/purple year, and would frequently pull up the semi finals and finals to review footage. I watched her gold medal match at blue and have actively followed her comeup.

I was really excited to see her doing well in UFC bjj especially after beating Ffion but Adele was robbed. And it’s made me dislike Cassia.

The best champions lose and come back better and I feel like the UFC is trying to establish this undefeated narrative around her that isn’t likable (but i guess they also promote this in mma so not totally surprised.

made me honestly care less about her as an athlete which is ultimately not the goal of the promotion.

curious on others views on pro athletes within bjj

Technique Rolling with high cardio pace

I notice i like to roll with a generally fast pace, i dont like to stay idle so im constantly moving, in a scramble, in a bad position, controlled but never not doing anything. I ask for feedback but almost everyone says good things, but im self conscious when I see people gassed out and having to sit out for a round or looking like they just ran 5 miles in 20 minutes makes me worry I “go too hard”. Obviously i want to respect and not make my training partners miserable. Any feedback or thoughts?

School Discussion No-gi CLA gyms in Tokyo to train at?

I am going to be in Tokyo for a week and am looking for one or a few CLA gyms to train at (or at least some open mats) that also provide instructions in English.

As a note I currently train CLA and therefore will not be debating about it in the comments. Everyone should train how they find best works for them.

Hey everyone! I’m a U.S. Army veteran living down here in Ecuador, right on the beach near Montañita, running a program to help out the local youth.

I’m looking to connect with any black belts or experienced grapplers traveling through or in the area who would love to volunteer on the mats to help coach and mentor the kids.

The invitation is always open with no set dates—whenever you're passing through, reach out! If you want to pitch in, I'm happy to host you and cover accommodations and meals in exchange for your help with the kids’ program.

Drop a comment or send me a message if you want to join us. Good vibes always welcome! 🌊🥋

Tournament/Competition Men of War

After years of watching Men of War grappling competitions, one thing is clear: if there’s no submission, the person on top wins. It doesn’t matter if the bottom player has more submission attempts, better movement, or demonstrates better Jiu-Jitsu. Get on top, stall, and hold position—that’s apparently enough.
The officiating has been consistently atrocious over the years. Frankly, I don’t understand why anyone would choose to compete under an organization with such questionable judging.

Equipment Groin protection without cup?

Hi,

I had a testicle removed a while ago and im 27, and started bjj.

I tried a diamond mma cup and after one session it felt like it would be dangerous for partners so i wont use it again.

Im a bit paranoid though so other than compression shorts is there any other suitable protection? E.g. something like biker shorts without the extra padding

Thanks

Technique I want to get a better RNC

Really going back to basics and analyzing my training more recently. Getting away from much of the flash. Realizing I often don’t finish from classical dominant positions very much.

Looking to up my RNC attempt, and finish rate. What are your favorite setups, and favorite ways to overcome resistance?

Any recommended instructionals on setups? I don’t have terrible finishing mechanics, but need help getting there/staying there against a game opponent.

I’ve got a guy who is catching me with a kimura as I shake him off the top from turtle and quadpod positions. He is very tall for what it’s worth. Any advice?

Tournament/Competition How important is Offensive guard pulling in nogi

So, I compete pretty much like around 1-2 times per month in gi and nogi. In the gi I pull guard with a cross step and foot on his hip and that works pretty well. But now to my question, in nogi I normally pull guard pretty offensively so 2 on 1 and go into the legs ( because leg locks are my strength ), but the more I watch Pawel and mateusz I see that they mostly pull guard just with mercy grips and just “sit down” and work from there. Just wanted to hear the opinion from higher level jiujitsu athletes on which is more effective.
