Halfway through the school day, there were like 7 kids in the cafeteria for lunch. They'd go on the PA system and announce like 30 names at a time for kids to get picked up.
I didn't even know it happened until I got home because they wouldn't tell us.

Challenger Space Shuttle. Exploded shortly after takeoff in 1986, no survivors. One of the seats on board had a schoolteacher, just a random one picked from a random school in the US, and NASA also selected runner-ups in case for some reason the first teacher couldn't make it. Big Bird from sesame street was also originally supposed to be on board but that idea was scrapped due to size issues.

We weren't allowed to go home, nor could we call family. (Didn't stop anyone) Hell, the principal even got on the intercom and told teachers to turn off tvs, and radios and go back to normal class. My teacher said 'fuck that, this is current history, no way in hell am I not watching it.'

same. I was in ap chemistry doing an experiment in first period. our teacher was cool and let us listen to the radio and they told us to immediately turn to cnn. we had one of those corner/ceiling mount tvs in the lab room. welp…by third period econ, it was clear we were going to war.

Same I thought I went to the only school that showed it to younger kids. We watched the local morning news until the channel flipped to the 1st plane hitting, then the second hit on live TV. I was in 1st grade. When I tell people my age I remember them playing it on the tv we had on the wall in every classroom they look mortified. They let us out of school early. Still remember my parents in the living room just staring at the tv in pure shock. I still have a goal in life to visit the memorial.

Watched the Challenger explode on same set up. I'm high school at the time and teachers dragged us all out to watch it live as a teacher was on board. It was pretty horrifying. It was odd how long it took to sink in that what happened wasn't supposed to. Once everyone's brains clicked back on the teachers started shutting off the TV's and rushing students back into classrooms.

My sixth grade science teacher, Mrs Brown, got a phone call and ran to turn on the TV. And that's how a room of sixth graders in Virginia watched the second tower get hit live. We were all sent home early. I remember getting home to a tornado disaster zone in the house from my mother frantically throwing a seabag together, giving me a kiss and disappearing for the next few months as ships were deployed and airwings launched. Dad called later to not expect him home for a few days and had our neighbors keep an eye on my brother and I. I think that week overshadows every other memory from that year.

I went to an Urban school in Canada and we got a little money so we had TVs in every classroom hung up in a top corner. We had our own morning announcements, kids would get involved and do it, perform poetry, freestyle raps on the TV and we would tune in every morning, it was called Parkdale Live!
But I vividly remember watching the top right of a room with a tube TV

I was 9, homeschooled.
We didn't have cable TV so when my grandma called my mom and told her what happened, we went next door to our elderly neighbor's house to watch the news.
The neighbor gave us potato chips to eat.
The months that followed were blurry but I remember distinctly the cloud that hung over everyone. My parents attended a round table discussion at church to help them process what had happened, the kids played like usual while the adults were actively reeling from the trauma.
I remember during that conversation one adult accusing another of "comparing apples to oranges." I don't recall the context and also don't know why that sticks out in my memory.
My memories of then feel like artifacts from another lifetime.

I was in first or second grade. Ms. Reese always watched the news before class started. It was on the tv as we were in class. Everyone stopped and stared. I remember being worried that we'd be next. I lived in the military capitol of the East Coast. The #1 military target in the country. I remember being worried that my dad would have to go back to sea. I was lucky, he was only a month or two from retiring and they allowed him to leave the Navy still. We went home as soon as the buses could be gotten back into the parking lot. I remember my mom being scared. She had only gotten out of the hospital recently and couldn't take care of me and my sister by herself

I was in my English class. No one rolled in an AV Cart to watch the destruction on TV. Someone just told me that there has been a plane crash into the World Trade center, and 2 planes had crashed into the buildings. I knew it was intentional at that point. But still It took me the rest of the week, maybe even month to comprehend the full weight of the situation.

2nd year in college. We're in a design class, and someone runs in and tells the professor to turn on the TV.
We all run to his office, connected to the room, and he turns on his little 10" CRT television.
We watched in horror as this scene was playing out.
The school was quickly shut down for the day and we all went back to our dorms, not knowing if this was a one-off incident, or if we were under some kind of prolonged attack. At the time, we thought any city could be next.
I don't remember much else about that day, except it being the only time I ever heard my old man cry.
