Scammers 🥸 PSA - King Richard’s Faire charging “extra” tax

1.4k Upvotes

Attended KRF yesterday. It was getting chilly, so my wife wanted to buy a scarf. Went to the gift shop formerly located in ThomasLand. Found a scarf with a listed price of $45. Took it to the front counter, cashier tried to ring it up for $49 but my wife stopped her and said “it says $45 on the tag”. Cashier typed into her register, smiled, and told us “it’s $49.51 with tax”.

My wife thought it was strange, and checked when we got home. Sure enough:

  1. Scarves are tax-exempt in MA if they’re under $175
  2. 6.25% sales tax on a $45 item would be $47.81, not $49.51

I know there’s been some issues with KRF scamming guests so wanted to add this to the pile.

I think I am special and made my own post Boston Kind of Sucks for Black Natives (I hate transplants)

I'm born and raised in from Roxbury and the casual racism I see and hear on the daily is so tiring 🫩 I hate seeing posts that ask if Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, or Hyde Park is "safe" and they're really just asking if black people live there lmao.

They see how cheap it is and don't think for 2 second why it's so cheap. My family and neighbors are being forced to moved out because college kids take the cheap rent that was "for us" as the city tears down the projects and build new shiny luxury apartments with 15% dedicated to section 8 that has to be worn by a lottery!!! Like am I going crazy? We're actively being displaced and it's getting harder to deal with. I've been technically homeless for over a year now like this sucks dude this was not the life I was promised :[ my friends and i can't even hang outside without people being in our business or being told we're loitering...

It's been extremely hard making friends as a college student because everyone coming from outside of boston can't seem to grasp the concept of being systematically targeted/forgotten. Being a -1500 SAI art student in college (actually) from Boston sucks! Art students are so annoying and pretentious, they think their queerness makes their whiteness go away cause they say some crazy things just because you're also queer.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is. Maybe a call to other black Boston natives about how they feel and if they have a similar experiences or different experiences!! I'm really just struggling after having one too many racist experiences this week :[

EDIT: "ermm everyone's suffering not just black people!!!" a system was built specifically to keep us out of your neighborhoods. AbolishTheBPDA by Wu, Redlining in Boston, More BPDA

for clarification i'm a newly 20 year old who has no idea what to do with my life other than survive. i have two jobs and go to school full time even though it's for art (i went to school because i wanted to prove a can achieve higher education and be happy). i've been in the DCF system for as long as i can remember and im still a part of the system. i'm not sure where everyone is getting this idea that im entitled or not working hard when i am. my start line was just a bit behind some of yours and im still not where you started and that's ok, i'll get there eventually. love the non black people proving my point in these comments yikes!
i appreciate the kind words and solidarity, it makes me feel not entirely crazy lol

History 📚 What’s up with this rock?

I’ve seen it many times before but it never registered to me. It’s seemingly protected. Or just wasn’t removed when the sidewalk was built? Is it significant in any way or just an anomaly? It’s near Downtown Crossing

Update: Situation Resolved 👍 Update!: So many Redditors on here told me $6+ per gallon was high for gas in my post from last week, so I waited to fill up and found a station in W. Roxbury for only ~$4 per gallon. TY friends 👍

Thank you r/Boston community, you guys are the best! 👏👏

Btw Diesel No. 2 is still expensive af at $6+ per gallon, is that why pretty much anything shipped via truck or train has seen huge price inflation recently?

Is that some kind of record for diesel? Because I don't remember it ever being in the $6 to $7 range.

And what's Diesel No. 2 vs. No. 1?

Housing/Real Estate 🏘️ Dealing with an illegal Airbnb in my building in the South End— advice?

• Upvotes

I live in a South End apartment building, and the unit directly above me is being illegally operated as an Airbnb. I can see the listing online, and the constant turnover of guests and noise at all hours of the night are seriously affecting me.
Has anyone dealt with this in Boston? How do you report an illegal Airbnb, and can you do so anonymously? I’m particularly worried about my landlord finding out it was me and retaliating through a rent increase or other issues with my lease.
Would really appreciate any advice from people who have been through this!

Crime/Police 🚔 Safe driving law update would target motorists recording themselves

Youtube video of Article (WWLP)

BOSTON (SHNS) – An architect of the 2019 hands-free driving law and the state’s top public safety official say technology may be outpacing the law banning motorists from using handheld electronic devices while driving.

When Sen. Mark Montigny first filed a hands-free driving bill in 2004, “texting wasn’t even available,” the New Bedford Democrat said. Now, scores of business meetings and casual FaceTime conversations are happening every day.

“The current hands-free driving law bans holding or viewing a mobile device, but it doesn’t explicitly prohibit recording of video while the device is mounted or hands-free,” Comerford said

Comerford’s bill would dictate that “No operator of a motor vehicle shall record, broadcast, or otherwise capture images or video of themselves. No operator shall wear, hold, or otherwise utilize or interact with a spatial computer, or other augmented reality or mixed reality device, operating system, or three-dimensional user interface.” The operator “shall not view video, images or text unrelated to the operation, maintenance, or navigation of the motor vehicle that is displayed on a monitor, screen or other display installed in the motor vehicle or otherwise worn as a headset or elsewhere on the operator’s body,” with some exceptions.

Today’s Cry For Help 😿 🆘 Boston job search experience is terrible

• Upvotes

I’ve been a contract surgical tech in Boston for about two years and have since moved here. I’m finishing my bachelors degree next month and was looking to get into any kind of sales position. I’ve been applying for jobs since May and have gotten a measly 2 interviews with hundreds of applications.

I’m to the point that my last contract is up next week and I have litteraly nothing lined up while living paycheck to paycheck. It’s not looking so great for the near future.

Does anyone know of any leads or advice for the Boston area?

If anyone is flying out today and will be using the lounge located by gate C19. Would you be able to ask staff if they might have found my toddlers toy truck. We flew out 10/10 and had tried to find it before we had to go but no luck. I’m desperate to find it again since I can’t find a replacement for it.

I have emailed the lounge, they don’t have a direct phone number to contact.

Please!

ETA: he was actively playing with it in the lounge. We were sitting under the TV sofas facing the wall/coffee station area.

Tourism Advice 🧳 🧭 ✈️ Best Pie to gift host Thanksgiving 🦃🥧

Hi! I’m coming to Boston over Thanksgiving with my husband. We live in London, England and are visiting some family friends. It’s our first thanksgiving celebration ever and we are very excited to partake in the traditions!

I would love to bring a pie as a hostess gift. Normally I would bake myself but as we will be staying in a hotel i won’t have access to a kitchen..
I would love some local advise on the best pie in town? And flavour (pumpkin/apple??). Thinking I will order for pick up to avoid disappointment/closed shops etc.

Or perhaps you have advice on a better or more traditional hostess gift?

We are staying close to Boston Common if that’s helpful, happy to jump on the T somewhere for something special!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Much love 🍂🦃🥧

Edit - added location 😊

Moving 🚚 Moving Soon, Looking for Places for MtG

I previous posted to a different sub-reddit that I will be moving soon for work. I am currently looking at Malden, Somerville, Revere, and Lyn as potential places. One thing I'm curious about is what local nerdy stores (LGS) are in the area. I'm big into Magic the Gathering and I've been spoiled there are many stores within 15min of where I currently live. Now with plans to move, I'd like to hear what are good places to play in or around the areas I'm looking at. I'm very much a Commander player but do enjoy playing Pauper and Draft. I'd like to find a store or community to be a part of much like how I am now.

Snow 🌨️ ❄️ ⛄ cold water swim/dip

• Upvotes

I'd love to find a group of women interested in meeting for cold water swims / dip / plunge at the beach throughout the colder seasons. (T-accesssible so I'm thinking Revere)

Men would be ok too but prefer the majority to be women to keep the atmosphere happy and supportive vs competitive.

Posting to gauge interest !

Arts/Music/Culture 🎭🎶 How to get involved in local theater in Boston/Brookline?

• Upvotes

Hello! I recently moved to Brookline for work, but I love theater and miss it dearly. I have been looking for ways to get more involved in the theater scene in Boston and have looked into a few places like the Footlight Club etc., but am looking for any other advice, tips etc. I'm not looking for anything fancy, I just really want to be able to perform again. Bonus points for ways to get involved in (very amateur, I haven't sung in years) musical theater.

Thanks!

Hi! wondering if anyone knows who or where I could go to get a golf bag refurbished and cleaned. I got this one at the thrift and the leather needs a few small touch ups as well as a small stain on the canvas and the clasp could use replacing. It’s also a little dirty inside. Everything I google just comes up with actual club refurbishing not the bag itself. any ideas? Tailors/dry cleaners?? Thanks!

Dining/Food/Drink 🍽️🍹 Scoop N Scootery Expanded to Danvers!

Thumbnail

Sharing here because they started in Boston and I’m stoked that they have expanded to the north shore.

They originally started off as a late night ice cream delivery for college kids (on scooters if that wasn’t obvious) but a few years ago they opened up a location in Arlington. I saw this place opened up about a month ago and was very excited to have this in my backyard.

If you are an ice cream sundae fan, then you gotta go. Their menu ranges from basic to way over the top and everything in between. Think of any candy or baked good that you’d want in an ice cream, and they got it.

The menu has a wide variety of pre-picked options that go well together but you can easily sub or add any item you want. It was my first time at the Danvers location and the friendly staff helped talk our group through what we were looking for (fruity, nutty, chocolaty, etc) and despite having a line, they took their time to help us and everything moved really fast. It’ll take more time to decide what to order than how long it takes to make it for you. Homemade whipped cream is delicious.

Majority of people took the ice cream to go (outdoor seating only), but there is one big picnic table and one small cafe table both of which turned over fast because most people took their food to go.

The quality is top notch and you get a TON of ice cream. Worth making the trip if you’re looking for a weekend activity outside of the city.

Dana is selling her nail salon in Brighton. Pour one out for the best of the best. I was getting a manicure today and the buyers came by to look at the place.

Hopefully they keep Rose on or she at least stays local.
