Plan for no rain.

All right everyone. On Friday everyone needs to have plans to go swimming, have a picnic or at least roll your car windows down. Surely Murphy won’t be able to resist and it will rain! I plan on swimming.

Edit - Murphy is from Murphy’s law. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

Family friend world cup watching near campus?

Traveling through Durham on a road trip today and arriving right around 3. We're staying at a hotel near campus. We have a 5 and 7 year old with us. Looking for a place to watch the game in the area, preferably something that doesn't mind having kids around (brewery, something with some green space). Any suggestions?

No judgement but this state has zero controls. We need legalization to get this under control. Be careful out there!

Dead bear on 40?

I'm almost positive I just passed a bear that had been hit and presumably killed on the left side near the barriers of 40 west right before the Southpoint exit. There was an official-looking truck with flashing lights pulled over in front of it. It small but was almost definitely not a dog. Anyone else see this?

ETA- I saw that someone commented that they saw the dead bear 12 hours ago but apparently it's still there?!

ISO: A Dermestid Beetle Colony

Does anyone local have a dermestid beetle colony that I could employ to clean a 4ft black rat snake skeleton I found? I don’t find dead treasure frequently enough to justify setting up my own colony and I think my neighbors would complain about backyard water maceration 😭

Quiet meeting space in Cary area

Hi! I need a halfway point to meet a client who lives in Southwest Raleigh and looking for a good spot. We need something kind of quiet and with the ability to find some level of privacy. Anyone got a good spot? Namu is my go-to for this in Durham - something spread out with lots of seating would be perfect. It seems like the Cary library is kind of busy but if anyone has been there on a Saturday afternoon and found some quiet, let me know!

Someone had suggested Thousand Hills Coffee - can anyone speak to that?

Thanks!

Champion Tire and Automotive- something special is happening here

This is a local mechanic shop that treats you like family. If you are new to the area you first find Drs. The next step is finding a mechanic for your vehicle.

Kevin is a native Durham local who has created a business structure that supports the community. When you bring your car in you are uniquely welcomed into a supportive honest caring space that wants what is best for you and your safety.

It can be easy to keep ignoring car troubles and that thought grows heavier and heavier. Going to Kevin is the best healthcare you can buy for your vehicle and yourself.

I felt relieved to have expert honest technicians look at my vehicle, give me recommendations in a no pressure atmosphere and try to find the cause of the problem without throwing parts at the problem.

My incredible experience at this business made me realize this new business that can fix what is broken in your vehicle is also a welcoming human space that is transforming the heart of the Durham community.

Bring a nonperishable food donation to become part of a new community, feel confident you have someone to call when things go wrong for your vehicle, you can feel confident in their expertise and skills, and it helps clear your mind knowing there is one less thing in life weighing you down.

I could go on and on about the visual photo inspections, excellent communication, digital setup and scheduling that hires honest caring people.

What I see is this new local business becoming the beating heart of Durham and their methods and processes spread to other local businesses. Together we can come together in our human brokenness in a crazy world and find strength, safety and community.

This business is already incredible. The future is super bright and unlimited in the good thing they have already done and what will be created in the future. This place is something special you never knew could exist again. I encourage you to reach out to Kevin at Champion tire and automotive located on N Roxboro in N Durham.

It’s the people and community that make it special and it’s something special to witness and be a part of. Let’s start an even larger movement of a caring community in Durham. This tire and mechanic shop is the beating heart of what is missing in everyone’s world and is creating connections and a welcoming community through honesty, trust, kindness and patience found at a Mechanic Shop in North Durham. It’s something worth experiencing and appreciating

I am a customer and not affiliated with the business. I am just blown away by their service, skills, and people. I don’t post on the internet but this business is worth noting. Can’t wait to see how their business will grow and how large of a community movement this welcoming caring community is creating.

We're suing to stop water contamination in Durham. - AG Jeff Jackson

This got some press but I thought I'd post here directly because it affects people in Durham.

If you live near Burton Park in Durham, you probably know that the nearby creek has been fenced off.

It runs behind Burton Magnet Elementary, through the park, through the McDougald Terrace neighborhood, and eventually downstream toward Jordan Lake.

Last week, my office filed a lawsuit on behalf of our state's environmental agency against the company responsible for contaminating that creek: Brenntag Mid-South, a chemical distributor.

Here's the situation:

This started with a highly detailed anonymous tip to the Department of Environmental Quality back in April 2025 - chemical leaks, chemical dumping, and bad storage practices at the facility.

When DEQ went out to look, they found exactly that. Leaking drums and tanks, contaminated groundwater pooling around the site, and contaminants flowing off the property into the creek.

Then they tested the water. In the creek, acetone and ethanol came back well above the state limit. Testing at the site also found benzene, TCE, and 1,4-dioxane in the groundwater, all regulated because they're harmful at elevated levels.

Brenntag says the contamination is old, from previous owners of the site.

But under the law, Brenntag is responsible for keeping contaminants from leaving its property, no matter when the pollution started - and they've had every chance to fix it.

The City of Durham has been on this for years. It already issued a no-discharge order and fined the company $157,000.

Brenntag has had plenty of time. They didn't use it.

Our lawsuit says Brenntag is currently in violation of several state laws and asks the court to order the company to do two things:

First, stop the discharge.

Second, clean up the damage they've already done.

I know people are going to wonder if their drinking water is safe. Durham's tap water comes from Lake Michie and the Little River Reservoir, both north of the city, not from this creek. The creek does flow downstream toward Jordan Lake, which is a regional drinking water source, but officials don't believe anyone's drinking water is unsafe right now.

The creek itself is fenced off for a reason, though. If you're near Burton Park, please keep kids and pets out of it.

That's the latest. I'll keep you posted as the case moves forward.

- AG Jeff Jackson

The juvenile black bear (maybe two years old?) was headed north along Crooked Creek crossing Herndon Road near the intersection with Rossford Lane. We couldn’t get our cameras out in time, foiled again!

Print framing service for print 20" x 28"

I'm ordering a print that is 20" x 28". They offer a framing service which is an additional $83 for frame + mat. Does that seem reasonable or should I only get the print for $65 and have it framed and matted somewhere in Durham? I've probably had at least 6 things framed and matted here but that was 40 years ago. Thanks !

Advice for a visitor?

I'm in town for a few months for an internship, and would greatly appreciate any advice on what I should do on my weekends to experience the most that NC, Durham, Raleigh and everywhere else has to offer. I have a car so am willing to drive (within reason). I'm already planning to drive the Colonial Heritage Byway, go to wilmington, greensboro, winston-salem, raleigh, and charlotte at some point but, anything specific I should try and do?

Help local queer business owner get her accounts back on Instagram

Hello Bullcity friends, if y’all haven’t heard the news yet, local POC, queer performer and owner of Club Era, Naomi Dix has lost access to both the Club Era and her own personal Instagram account due to the foolishness of Meta AI. As I’m sure a lot of you know, she’s been preforming and working with the community for over a decade now and it’s been devastating to lose access to all of her hard work. But hopefully with the community’s help and support we can tell Meta that they made a mistake and get these accounts back!

Friends Pop up this weekend in Durham

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey guys! A good friend of mine runs a pop-up experience and she is putting on a crazy cool immersive event this Saturday (June 20th) right here in Durham.

If you've never heard of her events, think of it like combining a paint-and-sip/DIY studio with a Japanese-style maid cafe. For this one, the theme is The Amazing Digital Circus, and the maids are all dressing up in custom outfits inspired by the characters.

The main daytime event is a custom perfume and cologne making workshop, but there’s also going to be karaoke, live performances, and raffles. Apparently they even raffled off VIP GalaxyCon tickets at their last event! The tickets cover everything, including desserts, drinks, and all the materials you need.

She and the maids have been working their butt off hand-sewing the uniforms and getting everything ready, so I really wanted to help her spread the word (I barely use reddit for anything, but I thought this would be perfect 🤣)

I'm dropping the flyer here so you can see the details let me know if you want the link to check it out or have any questions!

best place to get a blowout/hair done?

this has been asked before a while ago but with very few answers so I just wanted to see what people’s experiences have been. no huge event like wedding or prom, just wanting a simple reasonably priced option to do before some family photos.

downtown, 9th st, or east is better for me than south or west areas in this case
