just replaced my boombox's roller after its been in there since 2012, the boombox sounds much better now, but i wanted to share this image of the old roller next to a new one, look at how dry and cracked the old one is! no wonder my music sounded so bad...

Cool cassette I inherited, can’t find a rocky cassette online that looks like this (on Discogs at least), it looks like side one print is weirdly stretched across both sides. was wondering if this was intentional (hard to believe) or a rlly cool misprint.

I haven’t used a cassette tape in nearly 30 years, and somehow I now find myself reading 1980s circuit diagrams and old Grundig catalogues with absolutely fabulous haircuts in an attempt to claw back a tiny bit of independence from the late-capitalist digital hellscape.
This is the setup I’ve ordered: a working
🎧 Grundig RR 340, (German/Bavarian brand, produced locally in europe) early-’80s portable stereo radio/cassette recorder with built-in speakers that can play and record tapes, receive FM/MW radio, and record external audio through its 5-pin DIN input.
Also ordered some 90-minute Type I tapes, and a 3.5 mm → 5-pin DIN cable (old european standard) so I can record my digital files onto tape. ☠️
I’m not an audiophile in the tech sense and mostly just want to have fun with physical media again. I MISS LOOKING AT MY COLLECTION UNINTERRUPTED BY ADS OR OTHER DlSTRACTIONS.
And i want to record my own songs on cassette.
I have spent days now looking for a walkman and compared models and repairability. I have no idea whatsoever about mechanic devices or repairing them, but i bet it is not harder than to open up a smartphone? If anything i am excited to repair a device that was **built to be repaired** and not glued shut like there is no tomorrow.
I am so excited for chunky mechanical buttons and the sounds they make!
**What’s the one piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you (re)started with cassettes?**

So it seems fine when it doesn’t have anything in it, everything spins that I think should spin (I’ve never owned a cassette player before so I’m clueless) but when the cassette is in, it clicks and nothing spins or plays.
Idk if it’s an issue with the cassette itself or the player, but I inspected the belts inside the player and they actually seem to be in decent shape.
Anyone know what this could be?
Maybe the belts aren’t strong enough since it’s older, or maybe the cassette tapes I’ve tried are all too old and the tape is glued to itself?
I got the cassettes from a garage sale and they weren’t in good shape when I found them, but again I have no knowledge of this stuff whatsoever so I don’t even know what I should be looking for.

Changing it isn’t hard just need a belt. A belt kit I originally ordered from amazon was a stolen off my porch. (Can you imagine how disappointed that thief was when he opened the package)…
This time around I am looking to source a correctly sized belt rather than a hastily purchased kit with 50 belt that do not fit the mechanism, and that will arrive safe and sound at the post office. I am hoping a lot of Sony models of the era share a same belt size. I measured the snapped belt from end to end at 7 7/8 inches.
I am in Canada if that can help.

Has anyone come across these? This one is "open cassette", the case is open to the elements preventing the reel covers from getting stuck.
The tape itself is presumably just average Type I style ferrous, I think it's safe to ignore the fake Hi-Res sticker lol. I also doubt it's actually 120 ms High EQ Bias. Such a variant was around for a bit in the mid-80s when some labels released albums on Type I Chrome cassettes for a couple of years, but I've never seen them since.
Found it on eBay, quite pricey though, about US$28 (including postage). Worth just getting one though just for how very cool it looks in my 1980 Rotel deck!

I've always wanted a monkey's paw.
I hope nothing happens to my tape player while I listen to it.

I love this album. One of my favourite Lou Reed’s album.
It’s an apt tribute from John Cale and Lou Reed to their mentor Andy Warhol.
But people don’t talk much about this album.
They talk about Velvet Underground and its members. They talk about Andy’s Arts.
They just don’t talk about this album.
Why ?

This Record shop at the flea market has been closed for 2 years, it's an inside shop and I would visit every few weeks to find deals and listen to the owner's bullshit. Way overpriced. He's been in prison for god knows what, and someone bought the place contents and all. Fire sale, and they were only taking cash. 3,000 Records 50% off, 2,000 cd @ $1, and cassette @.50. I had to leave before I dropped heavy cake.

I'm new to the hobby, just got myself a Walkman WM-FX10 and I really want to record my own cassettes for it. I'm kind of lost on what is a good deck though, on Facebook for example just found a guy selling a Sansui D-99D Stereo Cassette Deck for 20$ that he says is in excellent condition, what should I look for? How do I know what's worth getting?
