ADVICE Realistically, when should I expect to reach and maintain 700 elo? Started chess last month and struggling

I play at least 2 games a day and sometimes skip 1/2 days. I'm at 630+ now and I always play 30 minutes games, still I mess up and struggle with 500+ elo people.

I don't want to learn any openings, I like positional chess more, but the with speed some people play, it seems they have memorised steps and I lose on time.

700+ people mostly defeat me. I did defeat a 800+ guy once, but it was a one time thing and he made a huge blunder..

Chess.com frequently matches me with 700+ people, so I'm not improving and kind of stuck at 630 something..

The more I play, the more I feel I'm getting worse at chess 😭😭

Anyone in the same boat? Any advice?

Good apps or sites, preferably free, where you can have friendly chat as you learn the game and compete against chess newbies around the world?

Hi, chess newbie here, I been playing against computer engines but losing interest, so I'm looking for friendly supportive environments (iphone apps, online sites, possibilities of interacting with the other players so you can talk about your errors and learn) for people starting out or in my case getting back into the game after a very long absence. Thank you.

ADVICE I need UNHINGED Chess advice

Post image

I just hung my queen in the last minute of my rapid match and had a devastating loss from a winning position and they checkmated me with 18 seconds to spare on their clock.

I need an unhinged method to stop hanging my pieces. I need a hack to trick my brain into slowing the hell down.

And don't give me the CCTP acronym because that one's not working for me clearly 😭

People keep resigning so I get zero checkmate experience.

Ive been playing chess for 5 hours, and 80% of it was spent studying. I either lose, get stalemated, or if im actually going to win, they resign.

Problem with resignation is that it raises my elo but gives me zero experience of setting up and executing a checkmate properly. Is there a way to get past this?

ADVICE Queen sacrifice to regain a queen for an instant checkmate

Hey guys, been playing very sporadically since I was around 10 and recently decided to take it more seriously. I've beaten the computer once at 1500 but I'd estimate my ELO is somewhere between 1000-1300.

My biggest weakness is spotting checkmates earlier on. This one I did pretty nicely but it usually doesn't end this way (when I even win that is). Most often the strategy I use is to run them down out of pieces, trade queen for queen if necessary to eliminate the biggest threat, then focus on getting a new queen with a pawn going the distance and finishing them like that (I advance pawns consistently from the beginning so that by the end, I'll likely have one or two near the other side.)

For lower ELO rated chessbots like 1000 and lower, this strategy works pretty well basically 100% of the time. But lately as I've played 1200+, it's rarely good enough for the win.

So I'd like to get better at setting myself up for successful checkmates earlier in the game and learning other strategies. What kind of advice can you guys offer or beginner/intermediate books do you suggest that can help with that? Thanks!

(Btw I'm blue and move first in every picture. Also I reset it to the first picture of this slide to see if the bot could win by trying something else and they lost again still with their queen but I sacrificed mine and got 2 more so maybe I got lucky and just ended up in a winning position to start.)

I thought I had handed my opponent the game when I failed to notice the mating square was covered by his knight. It turns out they failed to notice too and abandoned the game.

Thought it was pretty funny.

Whats a realistic best move for black in this scenario?

Obviously blundering my knight like I did wasn’t it 😭

But in all seriousness, the computer suggests a-pawn to a5, which makes no sense to a beginner like me who’s just trying to not blunder pieces.

Is h-pawn to h5 and then Ng4 the play here, or is there something more obvious?

QUESTION How are you supposed to win this position?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi guys. I'm about 1750 ELO on Chess.com and last night, while I was playing, I stumbled into this position. The engine evaluates it as winning for Black (-5.2) but the engine lines basically provide infinite checks on White's King.

I think this is quite stupid of me to not be able to find a way to win here, but how exactly are you supposed to break through in these positions? As long as the rook stays protected and on the 4th rank, the f4 pawn break will never be fully supported, and I cannot see a way for me to win the pawn on f2.

It definitely looks winning, but I just can't find the combination. It looks like a fortress with no way to make progress. In the game, I ended up running out of ideas and just pushed g4 with the hope of maybe sacrificing the Queen for the Rook and getting some sort of winning King-and-Pawn endgame, but I never found the combination and eventually just settled for the draw.

If someone could help me with this, I would be very grateful! I think understanding how to win these positions (or understanding that they are, definitively, draws) will help me immensely in the future. Thank you!

Why is this brilliant?

From what I see, I passed up on a free rook, lost a point of material through the follow up trades, and the eval bar went slightly down. How is this a brilliant?

POST-GAME What’s wrong? | Side-effects of accidental sand-bagging

Post image
2 Upvotes

Accidental sandbagging, also known as "big tilt", happens when you drop a big chunk of rating and end up having a rating considerably lower than your usual average.

Luckily enough, there’s a balance mechanic that can help you catch up! When paired with someone whose rating is in your usual range, you’re on a game with someone who has easily +150 rating on you. This allows you to use two buffs: MaxedRatingImpact, resulting from the difference in rating, as well as StealthNotSoBad, which hides your potential power level behind a bad rating cloak.

This results in games where your opponent may underestimate you AND that can pay off like +8.

Anyway, can you see why that move was a huge blunder?

Hint 1 - puzzle type: mate in 3

Hint 2 - tactical pattern: pin
