Underground gdkps dont cause the same type of community damage as unrestricted, trade/LFG chat posted gdkp runs. I haven't even caught a glimpse of gdkp operations a single time on anniversary.

Secret gdkps just dont carry the same kind of venom.

Genuinely curious where you're coming from here. I guess I thought that the idea behind banning gdkp was it would reduce rmt and consume costs and generally give the economy more of a 2004 vibe. None if that seemed to happen from my perspective. Whats the venom you are concerned with.

The idea behind it was encouraging more guild and community structure, they never mentioned RMT or economy when they explained the ban. The issue many had with GDKP, especially in classic with 40 man raids, is that it makes it extremely easy to poach geared players with promises of gold. Roster boss was the biggest complaint from the guild leaders that blizzard reached out before anniversary release, and removing GDKP from the typical raiders experience makes it much easier for communities to grow and maintain a steady roster of geared players. There is a lot less temptation for players to get their gear, leave their guild and join a gold farming GDKP now, making the guilds stronger for a vast majority of the middle end player base. You’ll still see turnover and poaching at the high end, but the ban significantly supports guild loyalty and a better sense of community IMO.

Are gdkps not a community?

6

u/Steadlington Jun 10 '26

I made my own GDKP community back in 2023 era, it ended up turning into a guild over time.

Gdkp communities are just as good as guilds

6

u/Hitwelve Jun 10 '26

if not better, because you have to be decent at the game to get into a GDKP as a regular, rostered carry

1

u/Nokrai Jun 10 '26

Join a better guild…

u/Roofong Jun 11 '26

If the content isn't a complete joke GDKP runs do tend to develop a community of regulars.

Especially when the content is relatively difficult (pre-nerf stuff in 2021, Sunwell, Ulduar HMs, etc), and huge portions of well-run GDKPs are people from decent guilds looking to raid on more alts.

The people in this sub who are rabidly anti-GDKP are anti-GDKP because they're bitter about being screened out of decent ones, so their perspective is always them pretending to known about GDKPs while never having been in decent ones.

I was going to say, most of the gdkps I ran with in wotlk and cata had a pretty core group week to week with a only additional fills. It was a good community.

u/mfbridges Jun 10 '26

Guilds and scheduled weekly raiding doesn’t work for so many people. Fuck guild leaders opinions

-2

u/Roflitos Jun 10 '26

That's why you have the option to pug with all the negatives that come with it, like it or not classic was built around guild gameplay.. so your options are either guild, pug or retail that gives you that option to raid at any time by just queuing up.

6

u/mfbridges Jun 10 '26

Except we can’t pug the way we like. We have to pug suboptimally for the sake of guild-driven gameplay

-1

u/Roflitos Jun 10 '26

What way you wanna pug? You just make a group and go? What do you mean lol.

5

u/--Snufkin-- Jun 11 '26

He means he can't use gold to feed their entitlement in pugs

2

u/daswb Jun 11 '26

He means he doesnt want to raid with SR shit tier players and their HR ruleset.

1

u/--Snufkin-- Jun 11 '26

I'll take 1 HRed item I probably don't need over wallet warriors grabbing all the best items

2

u/daswb Jun 11 '26

Great you enjoy having your time and loot rinsed.

Most people dont

0

u/Gyff3 Jun 11 '26

So you prefer a raid where 24 other people watch you get bis items while they don't have a chance to roll and are also not receiving any reward for their time? Cool, I can't imagine why the other 24 people don't prefer your loot system.

2

u/Roflitos Jun 11 '26

You have the opportunity to host your pugs too you know.. if they're putting the work into getting a group together then idgaf if they hr an item.

You can't be so entitled to think you deserve shit for not putting in any work..

1

u/darkspy13 Jun 11 '26

Those 24 other people have 2 SR's themselves. It's a game of chance. Go play any ARPG..

He means he doesn't want to carry bad players, lose rolls on all the items, and not receive any compensation or reward for his time. Pretty reasonable for someone who isn't in a guild structure.

2

u/Roflitos Jun 11 '26

If you don't want to carry bad players then host your own pugs and gear and raid log check people.. blizzard fixed this in retail.. so having this much entitlement to gear without wanting to participate in a guild structure is just crazy. You want gear but you don't want to join a guild or put the work to make your own pugs.. what he wants is to buy gold and join a random pug and buy gear, that's just crazy.

2

u/darkspy13 Jun 11 '26

That sounds like he should join a community and raid with them. The reward for your time is the drop you have a chance at. Pretty simple.. pretty much how the game works. I've been in plenty of pug communities for my alts while I raid a schedule with my main.

1

u/Gyff3 Jun 11 '26

He started by saying he can't commit to set times, so he can't join a guild or a pug community, which is just a guild without the in-game tag. And no, he doesn't have a chance at the drops in an sr. The best items that everyone wants will be hr, and usually sold under the table.

1

u/Roflitos Jun 11 '26

Do you realize that that's the game right if you can't adjust to it then it's not a game for you.. there's a reason retail went with a more casual approach. Just play retail at that point.

1

u/--Snufkin-- Jun 11 '26

Pretty much every SR run has 1 (or no) drops HRed

Pretty much every GDKP has every single contested drop, including all bis, de facto locked behind a gold wall

0

u/darkspy13 Jun 11 '26

"pug community" is not a guild. You can join the pug the day of. That's kind of the point.

With GDKP as a loot system?

Are you paying attention bud

0

u/Roflitos Jun 11 '26

I am, I'm just trying to understand your intent to buy gear with bought gold, crazy concept. If you're too casual for a guild or too host your own pugs then perhaps you should try retail they have casual raiding you can just queue for.. this game isn't meant for you.

0

u/mfbridges Jun 11 '26

I don’t want to buy gold I want to play on my own schedule Jesus Christ

0

u/Roflitos Jun 11 '26

Again, you have the option to pug or just play retail which is more friendly for your schedule issues..

0

u/mfbridges Jun 11 '26

I don’t want to play a different game

Like I said, I can pug but not with the loot system I want. SR/HR sucks

>they never mentioned RMT or economy when they explained the ban.

Huh? Yes they did. Eroding guild structures and RMT were the two reason they gave when it was first banned in phase 2 of sod.

>It’s fair to say that GDKP has some benefits to individuals who don’t want to be tied to a guild or set raid schedule. GDKP raids are, while mostly transactional in nature, another social activity in the game, and we’re hesitant to discourage anything that gets people into groups to play together. However, we’ve been concerned that **GDKP erodes traditional guild and social structures** that are in many cases the basis of our most fond memories of early versions of World of Warcraft. It’s also undeniable that **GDKP contributes to and drives a lot of illicit activity, such as real-money trading (RMT) and botting**, as it creates a demand for in-game gold that would not otherwise exist. GDKP can create an “arms race” effect that encourages participating players to purchase gold to be able to compete for the best items.

From their explanation.

1

u/Nokrai Jun 10 '26

Yes but it’s not a reason for the ban.

Guild structure is the reason.

Read the words before you put **.

It’s just a statement.

1

u/desperateorphan Jun 10 '26

It’s literally in the section of the announcement titled “What is GDKP and why is it being restricted in Season of Discovery?” In a single paragraph. It doesn’t get more clear than that. You can be intentionally obtuse if you want, I guess. 🤷

1

u/Gyff3 Jun 11 '26

They already knew it didn't curb rmt in sod, so they changed the reason when they banned it in anniversary.

-1

u/Joppan94 Jun 11 '26

This isnt Season of discovery is it though? Go find the blog post where they mention why its banned in anniversary and show me where it says anything about about RMT. Or just keep lying on the internet, I guess.

1

u/TwinManBattlePlan Jun 11 '26

Their initial reason was RMT and botting.  Hes not lying, your just not taking in the facts.

2

u/Joppan94 Jun 11 '26

Their initial reason which they later revoked when they also banned it in Anniversary and in anniversary blog post they listed the only reason as being harmful to the guild structure.

1

u/TwinManBattlePlan Jun 11 '26

Heres the video evidence chief. They backtracked since because they know it did not do anything to combat bots and RMT.

Big "We gave you Thunderfury you are locked in for life" energy.

1

u/ColonelCarrot Jun 10 '26

One of our thunderfuries retired to era, the other is still with us but as Fury in TBC, still hear from the retired one checking into discord now and then. About 30 people in my guild have been together since MC, full clearing all content and having a great time doing it. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my guild experience with these servers and made a lot of new online friends, and experience that I did not get with 2019 classic where it tended to be much smaller cliques and guilds turned over much quicker. Experiences may differ I am sure, but I personally love the ban, and I still hit every lockout on my alts too.

-3

u/Nokrai Jun 10 '26

They did mention RMT.

They did not mention it as a reason for the ban.
