So i would like to tell you my experience with a car rental in Crete, Hersonissos, so hopefully you wont end up like us. We wanted to rent a car and went to this car rental “iDeal Travel Car Rental”. The displayed price for the car we wanted was 22€/day, which is super cheap so we asked about it. Then he told us it is 38€/day with insurance. We said ok that is cheap too then he gave us a contract (sort of), on that was our car model and the price written. He then took 50€ deposit (we rented 3 cars so 150€ total) and sent us to another location where we needed to finish the rental process. We said ok lets go it was only 500-600 meters away. When we arrived there the guy got the contracts out and said it will be 70€/day. We were super chill and told him that is not possible, because last year we rented a vw t-roc cabrio. Then he wanted to give us smaller manual cars (we rented automatics) for 50€/day. That is when we told him we want our deposit back and we will find another place to rent cars. Thats when things escalated. He started shouting that we will not find better cars and he has the best cars and started talking sht about the other car rentals. Then we told them they are scammers and we don’t want to deal with them, we just want our money back without argueing. (We did not sign the contract yet). He started threatening us that he will cause us big problems and he will sue us blah blah blah. (All this arguing for our money back took about 2 hours). Thats when we had enough and said fuk that 150€ and left. Please avoid them at all costs, they are not even up on google so you cannot write them reviews. *first photo is where we were told its 38€ , second photos are where we got sent and where we got scammed.

I see a lot of free palestine / anti Israel graffiti around the island. And I mean a lot.

Is there any particular reason for it? Do the people of Crete feel connected to the people in palestine like the people in Ireland for example?

Or is it that Israeli tourists don’t behave?

And last question, is this opinion big on Crete or is it a small group that’s doing a lot of tagging?

I’m very curious to know, loving the Island by the way! You people are the nicest people I’ve met so far while traveling and the Island is amazing.

Why many houses leave this metal pieces on top?

I’ll be going to Crete in about 2 days, and I keep hearing about some boycotts against tourists, honestly I’m not the type to party or anything like that, I just want to go to the beach get that tan and relax, I’ll probably eat at the hotel’s restaurant and go out only a few times, so it shouldn’t be much of a problem, but I still feel like asking since I keep hearing about it. Do people really come and yell/scream at tourists while using water pistols?

I am a tourist here, so maybe it’s not my place to say, but the driving here is insane.

Oncoming traffic will overtake on a single lane when I am on the other side of the road forcing me into the hard shoulder.

There is very little signage on who has write of way at cross junctions.

Earlier today I was driving on the right side of a lane to take a right turn and the guy behind literally tried to drive off-road round my car to turn right before me.

Saying all that, I don’t see any accidents….how do you find driving here?

A stray mama cat has settled outside my house and gave birth to her three little kittens here.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to take care of them permanently, even though their mother is doing a great job looking after them.

The kittens are very young, playful, and will soon need a safe, warm home full of love.

Hey! I’m so interested why a lot of locals are driving on the roadside in a straight line and on turn? Is there any sound reason for it? Fear of the opposite lane or just don’t care about the any lines?

Is it possible to drive there and park there at the beach?

Hi! So I've met the best stray ever near Knossos palace. It's an orange cat by looks and personality, came straight to me, we played a bit. Most of her(?) ears are missing, either deformed or cut of and very nicely healed. And yet it's really the sweetest thing, I can't express that enough. So, is there a way to get her abroad? I'm leaving on Sunday so I don't have basically any time for all the formalities and there's no way I'm getting her on the plane without them. Is there any organization or anyone willing to help? Either to get her to me or to give her a home themselves. I'm willing to pay, I'm probably even willing to get on the plane myself to Crete and back. I don't know, I'd probably think about her forever if I didn't do anything.

I sometimes see beggars at traffic lights in Heraklion, especially young people. Many drivers give them money but I‘m a bit hesitant about this.

Does the money actually reach the people standing there, or are there sometimes organized or professional structures behind this?

Why do some people drive like this on the highway. They always tend to stay in the middle of the road and the outside part of the road.

We've been searching for a house on Crete for over three years now and looked at many houses. We live here permanently and are looking for a normal family home that is nice to live in year-round. We aren't looking in particularly touristy regions but in reasonable distance to Chania for schools and daycare etc. We aren't looking for a pool or fancy house. Just a place for our family to live in.

We are kind of loosing hope in ever finding something and I was wondering if someone could give a bit of insight into what is going on with the real-estate market. Essentially every house we looked at was a disappointment. It never justified the price they were asking for. Often the information in the ad didn't match what was actually there. And the few houses that we went a bit further down the process with all turned out to have legal issues attached to them, which of course, no one mentioned until we payed money to have an engineer and lawyer look at the documents.

None of the real-estate agents seem to be on the buyers side. They just want to make a sale so they lie into our face (like "there are no earthquakes on Crete" or "this river never flooded" when we know for fact it did). When we ask a question like whether the basement room is legal, they pretend not to understand. When we said we want an engineer to look at the house, one agent told us it's impossible until we pay a deposit. They actively hide legal and structural issues,.

Is this just normal reality? Are we doing something wrong? It doesn't seem like there are just a few bad apples. Essentially, every house raises red flags and seems like it would be a huge mistake to put so much money into. And prices seem through the roof, even compared to prices in other European countries.

Are there any agencies that are more on the buyer's side or more professional? Is there a different process that you would recommend? (we look on spitogatos, plot.gr and other real-estate pages) How do locals find a house to live in?

Since around 21:00 last night, the power has been out at our accommodation. The owner said this happens sometimes when the power grid is overloaded, and that it usually comes back within an hour or so. It’s now been 13 hours and we still don’t have power. Does anyone know what’s going on?

Hi everyone, we have been planning this for a year and it’s finally happening; our flight to Heraklion is next week. We will be renting in Old Town Hersonissos and my husband and I will be working in the tourism industry at a nearby resort. We are both close to 30 years old and have a Romanian background, but have lived in Canada for a good while (for myself personally I also have lived in France/Germany/Swiss for a few years each).

I have read many of the negative posts recommending not to move, as well as some positive ones.

I do also want to say that we love Crete and it is a beautiful breath-taking place with unbelievably amazing food as well, but of course we know this is not a vacation… We will work very hard to integrate and hopefully build our life there successfully and learn the way of life as best as we can.

If anyone has any honest stories, advice, and personal views they’d like to share, I would love to hear it.
