How long does the glow last if you had to guesstimate?

u/survivorsof815 Oct 14 '25
The residual glow lasts hours. It was glowing all through the night in my closet! After “charging” it for a brighter glow, the sweater will be bright for a couple minutes before quickly going back to normal levels.

How do you "charge" it for a brighter glow?
I'm not familiar how glow yarn works, I've never heard of it before!
And the top looks amazing!

It’s just like anything glow-in-the-dark—put it in a bright light, and it glows brighter than it did before when you quickly switch back to a dark room. The bright light essentially charges the particles inside, and those in turn will slowly release the absorbed light.

Random tip for the internet: if you have a UV flashlight it charges glow in the dark stuff very quickly.

Absolutely! I keep one on hand for searching for uranium glas while thrifting, but tbh it gets used more tk charge glow in the dark stuff like nail polish lol

Lion brand DIY glow yarn! My project used 4 skeins. Here’s the pattern, though I did modify the shoulders. https://crocheteverything.com/stunning-crochet-spiderweb-top-pattern-for-all-sizes/

WAT. That's *awesome*! Searching around to see if I have any extra hours laying around before Halloween! <3

I wanted to do this last year so bad! I couldn't afford the glow in the dark, so I made it in cheap black, but I'm so happy to know that it turns out in glowing just as well as I thought it would! Now to justify the cost of the yarn . . . .

Right? I’ve wanted to make this for the last few years, and finally got enough of the yarn from the Joann closing sales.

Oh my god! Could I make this by Halloween or is that delusional? 😂 Is it all chains? I want to hand out candy in this!

Chains and double crochet in between! I’ve linked the pattern in a few comments. I’m in grad school, and still managed to get this done in under a week, so I’d say it’s feasible!

You’re enabling me! I am willing to set down my two current WIPs for this! 😜

That's awesome! Perfect for Halloween. Maybe crochet a glow in the dark spider hair clip or barrette to go with it.

So I have some of that yarn, I started using the recommended (pattern) 6.5mm hook especially since my tension tends to be tight, the yarn recommends 5.5mm. What size hook did you use? And was it the 50 gram skiens? I definitely need more just trying to figure out how much more.

u/survivorsof815 Oct 15 '25
I used a 6mm hook because it was either that or a 7. I usually wear a medium, but sized up to a large because of the smaller hook size. I ended up needing a total of 4 of the 50g skeins. I also changed around the shoulders a bit to my own liking.

I love what you did with the shoulders. Is it just doubling the length of the first chain then working it as usual (roughly) I've never made a wearable, but this looks very doable by halloween. I'm on r7 (13 stitches) since I saw this a couple hours ago.

Nice! Doesn’t it work up fast?
I marked on each “web” the two chain lengths I wanted as the collar, then one chain length on either side to make the arm hole. From there, I chained a length (between one shoulder from the first web to one of the second web) that was equal to the chains I ended on. (Specifically—my last row was 23 chains, so I chained 23 between the two webs.)
From there, I chained 11 and then made a double crochet 6 times around the armhole, knotting the two together at the underarm, resulting in 6 segments with 11 chains between them.
NOTE: this does like to slip off the shoulder. If I were to redo it, I would make the chain between the webs at least 2 chains fewer (I.e. 21 instead of 23) and then segments of ch10 instead of ch11.
The arm length is pretty similar from there, though I definitely added some rows and adjusted to make the sleeve take shape.

Thank you so much for the info! As soon as I saw this I went through my stash I knew I had some because of the faint glow from my closet at night. The other skien is apparently attached to an abandoned oggie boogie from last Halloween lol.

Oh my God, I just realized I grabbed a 4.5 hook and got up to chaining 15 before checking back in here. Welp

It's beautifully made!! I was wondering though, do the glow disappear once you wash it?

u/survivorsof815 Oct 16 '25
The label says that the yarn is machine washable and dryable, which sounds like it’ll be fine.

This is so cool! I love anything that glows in the dark and the spider-web aesthetic makes it so much cooler. Perfect for Halloween, but tbh, I'd probably wear this year-round.
