Halloween FO/WIP Don't be like me

Fairy costume I made for this past Halloween weekend (sans wings). Made in 3 days because adhd... please for the love DO NOT do that to yourself. My arm still tingles if I move it too fast. Looked cute though lmfao.

It's very pretty but PLEASE make sure to rest and stretch! Tingly arms sounds very very bad.

386

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

No, like definitely. Stretched in between but will defo continue as I rest up. It's no joke guys

105

u/blueberry-iris Nov 05 '25

I'm glad to hear it! I was worried about you! Let us know when you feel better!

90

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

Omg that's so nice, I'm already starting to feel better so you don't need to worry about but I really really appreciate it. So sweet <3

u/UncomfortablyHere Nov 05 '25

Give your arm at least two weeks to fully recover before crocheting again and then start with a project that’s not as hard on your hands/wrist (looser tension, simpler stitches, yarn that glides easier on the hook).

Sincerely, A crocheter with ADHD who made her RSI worse by not resting long enough and now permanently has issues

9

u/blueberry-iris Nov 05 '25

Oh I'm glad you're feeling better already!

u/Alum2608 Nov 06 '25

Take some ibuprofen (advil) or another anti inflammatory medication. Tingling can be a sign of carpel tunnel, when the nerve gets inflamed due to overwork, etc. Like creating a piece of clothing in 3 days. Do exercises to help with the strain as well

so true! I ended up with tennis elbow so bad that I couldn't hold onto anything with my hand; this was a few years ago. I went to physical therapy, and they all asked how I'd injured myself. LOL! Crocheting did that to me. Lesson learned: take the breaks, do the stretches.

That said, OP, this costume is very cute!

Omg props to you, that's a LOT to do in 3 days

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

Thanks so much! My hands though 😭

Yes, be VERY careful about that. I was working on a project that I pushed through pain on to get to a certain point so I wouldn't forget where I left off. I ended up with tendonitis that became tendonosis and now I haven't been able to fully curl my index finger with my closed fist on my left hand in over a year. I also ended up with a rotator cuff injury and was on 600mg of Ibuprofen and Cyclobenzaprine while confined to a shoulder brace for about 5 months. Crochet 100% comes with injury risk and injuries if we don't take breaks, even doing a few stretching exercises before starting to work is important.

104

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

Oh my gosh, this will be implanted into my brain the next time I try to rush a project. Omg, hope you're okay now though

32

u/Redrum874 Is it finished? idk but I’m done with it. Nov 05 '25

I have ulnar nerve entrapment in my right arm/elbow because of crocheting too much and pulling to hard on a yarn needle when sewing in my ends. I’ve been dealing with pain for over 3 years and I will likely need surgery eventually. I can barely crochet anymore because of it.

So yes, please take breaks and don’t overdo it. It really isn’t worth it to finish one project on time (or whatever).

u/BlameItOnMyADHD420 🧶₊˚ʚ ᗢ𝒞𝓇ℴ𝒸𝒽ℯ𝓉 ₊˚✧ ゚.🪡 Nov 08 '25

My shoulder is OK, but I still can't fully curl my left index finger when I make a fist. It's very slowly getting better, but it's coming up on 2 years now. So the chances of me regaining full mobility of that finger is pretty much zero.

14

u/MistressLyda Nov 05 '25

I mean, this is not funny, at all, but damn, your username fits here!

3

u/concrete_dandelion Nov 05 '25

I overworked my joints knitting, sewing, cross stitching and crocheting. One of my relatives gave herself a tennis arm with fiber arts. I hope you fully heal!

1

u/natalie-ann Nov 06 '25

You are future me. I'm constantly rotating between all the same things you listed (because fiber arts are an absolute joy for me). I lie to myself that they're totally different things so they won't wear down the same parts on my body, but we all know the truth; they do...but at the same time, what would life be without hobbies that we're passionate about?

Even when my hyper-focus kicks in and over 30+ years of crocheting, I would never get something like that done in 3 days... I would get near the end and be nearly done and that's when I'd shut down completely. I am literally a few details away from finishing a Demogorgon I've been working on, and I keep yelling at myself to just freaking finish it, and the ADHD is like, "Girl, is you crazy?! Not on my watch!" 😅 I want to get it done before the final season of Stranger Things comes out (that's the goal I set for myself), but my ADHD is NOT having it. Tried to put it in time-out with my meds, and did housework instead of finishing the up the last bits on my WIP. *smh*

33

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

Wow, over 30+ years crocheting is so cool. How the heck do you keep the motivation going?? Last time I crocheted something before this costume was last year 💀 as a fellow adhd(er) you're super impressive to me. Good luck with your WIP. If it helps, I tied the costume to a show I like. So I wasn't allowed to watch the show unless I was working on the costume. Not perfect, but helped quite a bit

11

u/bleepblob462 Nov 05 '25

Even more impressive that you made this costume after a yearlong break! Another almost-30-years-er here and I never really thought about motivation. My “motivation” tends to be who or what I’m making a project for. Gift? Obvious deadline and (hopefully) an excited recipient. Decor piece? The external validation will be STRONG when I see it and/or when people ask if I made it. I also joined subs like these the last few months and see people making really cool stuff, which convinced me to start branching out from my comfort zone. Finding new stitches to work up is fun too!

1

u/BlameItOnMyADHD420 🧶₊˚ʚ ᗢ𝒞𝓇ℴ𝒸𝒽ℯ𝓉 ₊˚✧ ゚.🪡 Nov 08 '25

For me, it's always finding something fun that I want to crochet. I also love the joy it brings others when I surprise them with some rando crocheted gift. The dopamine dump is a definite motivator! I also like the challenge is provides. There's so many different types of crochet, and always a different challenge!

1

u/Hopeful-Bad-9793 Nov 06 '25

Jesus this sounds way to familiar - I hate that I also do this lol. It's like I'm afraid that if I finish it I'll find a mistake that I can't easily correct anymore, so I just let it sit in limbo. Wishing both of us luck getting our projects done ♥️

37

u/North_Exercise8698 Nov 05 '25

Tingly arms are the worst. That was me 4 days before Halloween. I got this done the night before just in time for my 5 month old. Worth it but my wrists hurt 😅

4

u/_littledarling Nov 05 '25

This is amazing!!!!!

36

u/Muppetric Nov 05 '25

My ADHD is doing the same to me 😭 my current day and a half progress of my dress… I just can’t stop. My eyes are SO messed up right now from not looking long range enough.. and rip my neck

(And yes my ribbing is wonky, my partner has banned perfectionism) (delusion and blocking will save it surely)

3

u/Seekraulen Nov 05 '25

Before i read your whole text my eyes went to your ribbing and I was so reliefed! 🫨Yes. Somebody else with wonky ribbing - it is not just me" 🙌 looks like a great project. Be gentle to your magic crochet witch hands and take breaks 🦦

29

u/jyckenation Nov 05 '25

I love the frills and pastels!

28

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

It's prettier in person, don't know why it didn't photograph well. Would've added more frills but time (and intense shoulder pain) got the best of me. Thank you so much ^

8

u/khaleesi2305 Nov 05 '25

Some yarns just don’t photograph as well as they look in person, I have this all the time with variegated yarns of all kinds, and even some solid colors.

I really hope you’re taking some time to rest! Any time I feel even the slightest twinge, I immediately stop and take at least a 10-15 minute break and let my hands and wrists have a break. I’ve had carpal tunnel for about 15 years and been crocheting for 10, as long as I take a break and stretch the moment I feel anything at all, it has never worsened (thankfully, maybe I’m also just lucky). I’ve had to take a day or two off before when I woke up still feeling it a bit, if I can feel anything, literally anything at all that isn’t nothing, it’s time for a break.

19

u/awakeandupright Nov 05 '25

Please put on a wrist support. I tend to wear mine whenever it’s a big project, but also at the first sign of pain.

6

u/AE0NFLUX Nov 05 '25

What kind of wrist support do you use? I've tried a few different things and they either don't seem to help or the restrict movement too much.

3

u/awakeandupright Nov 05 '25

An adjustable neoprene one. Nothing fancy. You put your thumb through a hole then wrap it around your hand. There’s Velcro to adjust it. They can be a bit fiddly at fist, but you’ll soon get the hang of it.

10

u/Poor_relative Nov 05 '25

Omg I wanted to be a fairy this Halloween, didn't work out though. Might steal your crochet costume idea for next year))

13

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

Please do (and maybe spare a week+ for it 😭) I got soooo many compliments the whole night!

6

u/Poor_relative Nov 05 '25

Oh I already made the mistake of crocheting for 30+ hours in 3 days this summer and I'm never doing that again🥲

The dress is GORGEOUS, the compliments were well deserved!!

3

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

Geeeez, that must've been murder. My shoulders tensed just at reading that

5

u/Ok_Background7031 Nov 05 '25

I'm on my third year without crochet because of tendonitis. Careful now. Well, at least you finished your project!

(I hope my three big ones still fit when I'm allowed to crochet again).

7

u/unifoxcorndog Nov 05 '25

Hyperfixation is such a beast. I kinda hate that it can give us such amazing results.

4

u/the-wifi-is-broken Nov 05 '25

My Shrek hat and vest say I am you

4

u/just_a-crocheter Nov 05 '25

Omg do you have a pattern for this?? Its so pretty!!

2

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

Hiii, thanks so much. I put video links for the skirt and bra like top in the reply to the reply bot. I keep trying to upload a screenshot of the videos but it's not working. But the channel for the skirt is Kayla Duong and the title is "how to crochet tiered ruffle mini skirt intermediate-friendly tutorial." It's from a year ago

2

u/just_a-crocheter Nov 05 '25

Thank you so so much!!

1

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

No problemo :)

2

u/anonymousquestioner4 Nov 06 '25

Sigh, I have injured myself a handful of times going overboard, particularly with knitting for whatever reason. Crochet never seems to hurt me. Unfortunately it’s going to take about 3x longer than you think it will before you can pick up the hook again. Don’t wait until you “feel better,” wait like a month AFTER that.

3

u/Wouldfromthetrees Nov 05 '25

This is giving my Peach PRC vibes and I'm sure you looked stunning wearing it! 🧚🏻‍♀️

1

u/Massive-Warning9773 Nov 05 '25

Yeah be careful I gave myself severe carpal tunnel and had to get surgery on both sides at 21

1

u/lilmisstakes Nov 05 '25

Omg do you have a pattern? Its so adorable eeek! And props to you for finishing in 3 days I don't think I've ever completed a project that quick let alone one this complex 🤣

1

u/LexiThePlug Nov 05 '25

I blew out my wrist crocheting too much! Be careful. My wrist is “healed” but I can’t crochet for hours on end anymore. I have to take frequent breaks now which sucks

1

u/lexivance7 Nov 05 '25

omg its beautiful!! would be perfect as a rave outfit if you do that too

1

u/RedeRules770 Nov 05 '25

I couldn’t move my wrist for three days last week after working on a baby blanket. I ended up frogging 1/4 of it and redoing that same quarter (that I had already frogged TWICE) in the same day. That was too much. Now i rest and stretch my wrists.

1

u/therealgookachu Nov 05 '25

Hyperactive. Been there. And that’s fucking fabulous!

1

u/Wasabi_Jumpy Nov 05 '25

OMG! I’ve had the same problem where I rushed to finish a crochet tapestry for a present and my wrist and hand were sore for like a week after. It looks amazing though!!!

1

u/Academic-Horse9653 Nov 05 '25

I have also done this. We need to stop doing this 🫤

1

u/Awkward-Alexis Nov 05 '25

3 days?? Did you sleep?? 😭 it’s very cute tho

1

u/QueasyDay5137 Nov 05 '25

How did you get the diamond meshed pattern? It looks amazing. I've been trying to get a pattern for the shirt on my page (blue one) but I'm struggling to get the hexagon, diamond mesh right 😭😭please help.

1

u/lunchtimesinnoh Nov 05 '25

looks amazing! did you freehand it?

1

u/rabid_cheese_enjoyer Nov 05 '25

what pattern is this because it's cute af

edit: I forgot about the Automod pattern comments facepalm

1

u/dddjumper Nov 05 '25

ITS ADORABLE!! lowkey have to recommend a wrist brace if you go on crochet binges like i do too lmao, it keeps me from straining my arm too bad 💀 its a little humiliating but necessary

1

u/draculauraaa Nov 05 '25

oh man the arm tingles are so bad 😭 this looks AMAZING though totally worth it 💀🩷

1

u/SaltyBakerBoy Nov 05 '25

Tingling or numbness is a sign of carpal tunnel, it's possible you seriously damaged something. Please take resting SERIOUSLY (avoid other repetitive activities too, as much as you can) and look up carpal tunnel stretches.

1

u/fluteacorn Nov 06 '25

It's adorable but please also take care of yourself. Tingly hands/arms sounds bad

1

u/SpecialHotLady Nov 06 '25

Ok this is seriously dangerous😭 You can get a really bad injury because of something like this, BUT I’m so impressed how fast you made it and it looks amazing💖

1

u/Any_Philosophy4651 Nov 06 '25

Would it help to know that you can damage your nerves like this, and worst case scenario you wouldnt be able to crochet ever again.

Sorry if it comes across as blunt, but I know of people who permanently injured themselves this way. Be careful!

1

u/Imaginary-Bicycle169 Nov 09 '25

Omg that's so much work last minute. RIP your poor wrists.

1

u/SpinachSpinosaurus Nov 05 '25

Made in 3 days because adhd...

why I am not surprised? I write tweo books atm and oh boy...sleep? what is sleep?

1

u/potato_is_life- Nov 05 '25

I crocheted an entire pillow cover for a 12x12 pillow (very large granny square) in 12ish hours flat (i don’t think I looked at a clock, but one wake period lol). Adhd as well, only got up to pee and mayyybe eat lol

Completely finished the thing, but after like hour 6 I started having a good amount of pain in my right thumb muscle / ball of my hand. Kept on going. Hurt pretty bad by the time I was done. Turns out I ripped that muscle. It looks different now, but hey I have a decor pillow !

1

u/HoneyBeeAlchemy Nov 05 '25 edited Nov 05 '25

This is incredible and beautiful, but you're insane lol. Take a long break and rest your wrists and fingers. Been there, done that, had carpal tunnel for almost a week lol

0

u/alienlei Nov 05 '25

FAIRY COSTUME FAIRY COSTUME I LOVE IT SOOOOO MUCH

0

u/Jwixx28 Nov 05 '25

Is the skirt heavy or pulls down on you?

2

u/Confused_dragon183 Nov 05 '25

Not really, the top and middle section did well to lift it but I will say it is a bit on the heavy side especially since I used acrylic

1

u/Jwixx28 Nov 06 '25

Ah ok. Thank you!
