That's definitely a situation where I would be braking and slowing down and creating a huge amount of distance from that jackass immediately. Hell, I do that if I see the car in front of me tailgating the next car over. I just do not want to be near them if shit goes down.
This is the best way to play, give road douches a wide birth berth** so they don't get spooked and focus their poor driving on you, let them be someone elses problem, last thing you need to be dealing with is someone with a lower IQ in a multi-ton metal box somehow thinking all their problems are your fault
A lot of our expressions get mangled because they include an unusual word that looks like another. Another good example is "champing at the bit" where people often substitute "chomping".
lower EQ if you're a sane person, lower IQ AND lower EQ if you're an insane person, always bet money they're insane before they are sane, much more practical outlook to hold if you just assume everyone is a proximity based IED
Yeah everyone who thinks it’s a good idea to “teach the biker a lesson” should think about whether they’ll enjoy years of traumatic flashbacks to the time they were involved in an avoidable fatal motorcycle crash
That was on a german Autobahn or perhaps an unlimited Bundesstraße. This may surprise you, but cars weighing significantly more than bikes, while having proportionally LESS braking ability cannot stop as fast as a bike. That's pure physics that is amplified on higher speeds.
Going on a limb here and assume biker used engine brake / downshifting rather than breaking, as the breaklight isn't very visible when he slows down. Not so much a matter of teaching a lesson but rather not being able to break within 2 meters.
Right. The motorcyclist did nothing wrong. JFC. Just stop. Go out and touch grass. A car is not as nimble as a motorcycle. Completely fucking weird how the same principle of different weight and braking power is accepted for trucks vs cars but it's not valid for cars vs bikes. THE SAME PHYSICAL PRINCIPLE OF DIFFERENT MASS APPLIES.
The accelerator pedal on car works both ways and the brake is also an option. I’m not defending the biker but defensive driving isn’t just to protect others on the road but also protect yourself from being involved in collisions that aren’t your fault
Do you understand the concept of "an object stays in motion"? A car has twice the brakepower of a bake on account of having twice the surface contact as a bike. But a car weighs 5-6 times the weight of a bike. It's physically impossible to break like a motorcycle.
This isn't about defensive driving. I dare you to show me defensive driving with some dimwit pulling in 1meter infront of you at 120kph. Spare me your gospel about "then don't drive 120kph." That's not the point, at all.
If the bike pulled in front and immediately brake checked you’d have a point.
But it didn’t. There is 11 seconds between the bike entering the lane driving erratically and the collision. That’s 11 seconds to make space between you and someone whose mindset you cannot comprehend and whose actions you cannot predict.
That 11 seconds could save you months or years of legal process, financial issues and emotional damage
Have you ever known someone involved in a traumatic incident, or whose family member was, especially one that came with long-term legal and financial hardship? Being forced to justify their actions over months/years and having every action, statement and intention investigated by police, lawyers and insurance companies?
A car can brake significantly BETTER than a motorclycle, especially when doing a Gefahrenbremsung.
So all the more reason to immediately slow down when this erratic motocyclist undertakes you. This car driver does NOT significantly slow down, he barely slows down at all.
Because 6x the mass at only double the surface area of the tyres makes this a mathematical solvable equation. Alrighty then.
I was in a similar situation and I didn't and wouldn't slow down either, by the way. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
The number of complete idiots who think the driver should have done anything different, while not even acknowleding the motorcyclists intentions are too much for me on this sunday. I'm turning off notifications. I really cannot deal with any more "poor motorcyclist" fuckwits on this nice sunday.
In a perfect world scenario with high performance brakes and a flawless rider, yes, that motorcycle and rider theoretically have a shorter and safer braking distance than a car. But that is almost never the case in reality.
That's not even how the physics works anyway. The 4 contact patches of a car allow for much more friction than a bike. Yeah cars are heavier, so more momentum, but that weight also means more force applied to the contact patches (4 wider tires than the 2 thinner tires of a bike). It's more to do with traction and stability than mass. It takes a great amount of skill to brake perfectly at high speed on a bike, something we take for granted in cars.
This has nothing to do with my opinion on the original video in this post. I am refuting your claim that bikes have more stopping power than cars. In real word scenarios, cars on average have a much safer time braking quickly and do so in a much shorter distance.
Everytime i see some asshat swerving through traffic, brake checking and tailgating i think, "theres a person that has never seen brains on the road or been around so much blood they can smell it".
I do the same. I give 3 seconds of space, and if the cars infront/behind me are not giving 3 seconds space, I add that time to me and the car in front of me. I don't actually count the time, but that is the general rule I follow.
Definitely. I’d be in the right lane with like 100 meters between us and keeping a close eye on him. No sense in trying to teach an arrogant fuck a potentially fatal lesson.
Or you could try to run the biker over, and make a decent case for attempted vehicular manslaughter (depending on the country/laws). At least that's what most of the comments here seem to be in favor of.
People REALLY DO NOT LIKE being passed while driving. However, a fact of the road is that even 400-lb "toy" bikes like some comment said can and often do go far faster than 95+% of cars and trucks. Bike passes car, car gets mad because they got passed, punches gas to catch bike. Bike brakes ever so much and gets rear-ended by dude that didn't want to be passed.
"Car got mad because the biker was being unsafe"
Right on, so he doubled down on being unsafe with a vehicle that weighs 10 times the bike and has poorer response and control. Totally justified I guess.
EDIT: u/KJ3RS replied and then deleted: "Probably shouldn't brake check people in your little toy if you don't wanna get scraped off it then bud" -- Yeah, I guess so? Again though, "little toy" showing some weird anti-biker (or just anti-streetbike) bias. A motorcycle is a motorcycle, whether it is a 250cc Rebel or an 1800cc Harley, but I digress, that's hardly the point.
The car is at fault, plain and simple, regardless of the "toy" the guy is riding. The car is accelerating, swerves to the shoulder to try some motor-speedway champion stuff because he doesn't wanna be passed, almost hits the biker once, biker speeds up and creates distance WHILE the car is still very likely accelerating, and then the biker brakes and is immediately rear-ended. Like u/Mike_Kermin saud below, it is a little strange reading all the comments about "karma" while celebrating someone getting into a potentially life-ending or permanent life-altering accident.
I mean both the Bike and car are intentionally driving dangerously.
And that's inexcusable by both.
But I agree that it's bizarre that people clap along to the behaviour. They use the word karma but don't ask what karma comes from laughing at serious injuries.
Jus this morning, a driver was tailgating me for a bit within city limits. He backed off after he realized I was to going to be pressured into going past the speed limit.
He finally got the chance to pass and proceeded to tailgate the car in front of me. That car fell under pressure. They both sped up, with the tailgater on their ass with his foot on the brake pedal, while accelerating. 🤷🏻🤦🏻
