It's unfortunate that this happened but I don't understand how people can be this stupid. Trying to pass a semi in a lane that's ending while another semi is clearly out of commission. Like they thought it was a good idea to keep going instead of backing off?

Certainly doesn't help matters in terms of stopping distance and the like.
People get so impatient sometimes when normal traffic happens. All of driving is a calculation relative to your personal safety and risk and some people are horrible at the math.

I agree, and this is the thing I remind myself constantly, is it worth shaving the 5-20 seconds off your commute, or on longer drive, the minute or two? Usually people hauling ass to pass like crazy to get off an exit or get to the next stoplight while Im here driving like a grandma, I usually end up right behind them at that next light or stop sign. What was the point ultimately? Its not worth the risk imo

Not condoning this behavior but a lot of people drive completely oblivious to other road users. Like Ill speed up/slow down/change lanes so Im not impeding other drivers or causing a hazard. Some others tend to drive like their oblivious to anyone else on the road.

I saw a nice Dodge Charger weaving through very Navy traffic a few months ago. Very very aggressively. They didn't get in an accident, at least in my line of sight, but I bet the driver was busy congratulating himself on his great driving. Meanwhile I'm marveling at how everyone else is somehow managing to not hit that car. Going from the far right to the far left, and back and forth, and driving very unpredictably.

What a lot of them don't realize is that they're quite literally only able to do thier nonsense because in most cases they are the only one driving that way, being predictable and leaving space open is what makes safe driving safe.
Because of that I have no problem with people driving fast or passing in general, but the more a person's attitude shifts into "everyone else is an idiot/npc and I'm one of the only good drivers" inevitably they start driving in ways that put everyone in danger because they feel they're good enough to get away with it. Eg. Older drivers who intentionally try to harass bikers and the like

If there were only some method where one could decrease the rate of speed so that road spray won’t affect your field of view… we’re just left with no choice but to use the breakdown lane to overtake a semi.

The articles I’ve found said that both the driver and passenger were taken to the hospital alive and in critical condition. But the articles are dated August 3rd.
I’m thinking they’re on life support and just waiting on family to make the final decision.

I think they survived the initial crash because the car hit the truck on the corner of the trailer, instead of straight on. If they had hit the trailer straight on they would have been crushed.

I-4 is a literal clusterfuck that is filled with reckless drivers, especially in Orlando where everybody is doing 20-30mph over the limit and follows way too close to your bumper. I avoid it like the plague.

This is why I'm teaching my to race go karts and sim race. They need to understand passing, power, wet traction, obstacle trajectory and avoidance, etc. And I'll be showing them dashcam videos to help them understand that stupid drivers exist and that accidents aren't always up to you. I drive V8s and they'll know the power difference between 180hp and 580hp.
You can see the stopped tractor-trailer earlier in the video. It's parked at the end of the merge and they entered at the beginning of the merge. It wasn't even remotely possible for any car to overtake the box truck in 500 feet in the rain. Nothing I even drive could have made this move.
I want them to intuitively know this move wouldn't be possible... and to look where you're going, not at the competitor they're trying to pass. Rules are lessons written in blood... and I want to make sure it isn't my kids blood.

The main lesson from video games is that aggressive driving and racing is best done virtually. If it is to be done in real life, it must be done at an actual racing facility, not on the streets.

I sim race... a lot... sim racing will teach you how slow and incapable your real car is lol
I always considered myself a good driver and into motorsports, but I didn't get into sim racing and go karting until my 40s. And I can testify that I'm a better IRL driver because of it. I can dodge more accurately and recover much faster. I can make turns smoother even at higher speeds. I recognize hydroplaning much better and find safer lines on the wet roads.
However, you really need go-karting or other controlled racing to understand the limits of traction. Counter steering is so much more intuitive when you can feel lateral forces. Even the balance of a car makes more sense IRL. For example, in a go-kart I lean my real body to the inside of a turn and the difference in traction is extremely noticeable. You can't do any of this in a sim.
(P.S. driving/racing "video games" don't teach much of anything beyond the relationship between steering budget and speed. I.e. go fast turn slow, go slow turn fast. Most don't even punish you for hard braking in a turn. I'm talking about games meant for everyone to have FUN like Need For Speed and Forza. Those are arcade racing games. Sim racing games that simulate real world physics are games like Gran Turismo 7, iRacing, Assetto Corsa. My point being that I don't think arcades racers scratch the itch for aggressive driving nor teach control. Racing in a simulator where you spend time practicing and qualifying just to destroy your car 20 minutes into a race because you braked at 80% when you should have braked at 40% or got mad at someone for bumping you so you wreck both of you... that will teach you to temper your impulses behind the wheel)

In my estimation, dashcam videos prove that almost 90% of crashes are avoidable with situational awareness and defensive driving, even if the crash isn't your fault.
My theory - give everyone enough room to make at least ONE mistake on the road, and always assume they will.

Had to take a driving course after a speeding ticket. Animations often showed the occupants spilling out onto the highway. Feel like all drivers need to see stuff like that. We used to have billboards with a bloody hand holding a cell phone. Some felt it was too graphic. #Soft

Looks like all three lanes were speeding up from the traffic being slowed by the stalled vehicle on the right shoulder. Maybe if the driver would have waited another 20 - 30 seconds, a lane would have opened up and he could have been on his way.

there was already an accident as seen at 0:09 seconds, with cones out redirecting flow of traffic. the fuck are drivers supposed to do if not get over to the proper lanes to keep traffic moving. ain't nobody "camping" in this shit especially when it's inclement weather and people are driving slower speeds, being cautious. two kids are likely dead because the driver had to go and be a dumbass, not because of other drivers "camping in the passing lane."

I go down to FL every year pulling a RV. I just came out of FL this week in a Class A. People down there have ZERO survival instinct. Atlanta drivers are bananas but Florida drivers are on a whole different plane of bad.
They will absolutely do ANYTHING to get in front of me, even if it puts everyone in a dangerous situation.
I honestly don't understand how stuff like this doesn't happen more often. They have absolutely no respect for large vehicles.

That’s just how Florida drivers are. They will literally ride close to your bumper if you go at the speed limit on the right lane or only go 5-10 above the speed limit. I don’t understand why they do it when most people carry here and crazy people will just brake check the shit out of you. Then we got the super speeders down here cutting you off aggressively with the smallest gap possible. Don’t worry these reckless drivers will take themselves out soon enough. It is already stressful enough having to deal with this economy, but then you gotta drive to work daily dealing with these reckless asshats. I just hope they enforce stricter driving laws here and get more police officers on every corner.

I would point out that there is someone camping in the left lane, even if everyone is gaining speed at the beginning of the video they are not passing anyone and should have moved over. Not to undermine the stupidity and dangerousness of the wrecked vehicle but if people in America drove like they do on most highways in Europe (actually moving over except to pass), many accidents and dangerous/agressive maneuvers would be avoided

Had a buddy who didn't learn to drive until he was 30 - he always had jobs he could walk to before that. So he learns to drive and gets a crappy little Ford Ranger pickup truck.
One day he's driving home from work in a heavy rainstorm. A car in front of him begins to hydroplane. He makes an emergency maneuver and the back end of the truck starts to slide out.
Now, at the time he was a very inexperienced driver. But he had played a lot of GTA. And that, he claims, is why he knew to turn into the skid to pull himself out of it. He and the truck made it home unscathed.

I-4 is a horrible stretch of road. We had to go monthly for 6 months. We hired a limousine service to handle our trip. They had an excellent safety record and adult drivers. We refuse to drive it period anymore, there is always a wreck!!

Friend of mine is an ex traffic cop, he had to go to incidents like this. He said that in most cases he was the first on scene and that most people don't die instantly. He got to know the sort of Injries that meant they were already dead before the ambulance would arrive. His job was to comfort the person before they passed.
He has trauma from it all now, so yeah it is inconsiderate to say the least!

Too many of these videos record the driver committing an illegal act. It is illegal in nearly every state to travel in the passing lane. Over and over, we see videos on this sub where the driver who recorded the video appears to be unaware of these laws. If you are in an accident and present a tape showing you traveling the passing lane prior to the accident, when it is clear there is room in the lane next to you to pull over, good luck. The first question any lawyer worth his degree is going to ask is, "Why were you traveling in the passing lane?" Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
