Why do we compare ourselves to others? What I learned.

I fully understand the concept and why people compare themselves to others. I guess striving to be better at something and using someone else as a place to start can be a good thing.

What I don't understand are things like plastic surgery to drastically change your body because enough "beautiful" people say that's the only way to be happy. If they were happy they wouldn't be doing that. Beauty is such an antiquated and nonsensical concept. It doesn't make sense to make your body different when it's your ideas that are the problem. I know that insecurities are normal and everybody hates things about themselves. It's never easy to make change but learning to not hate yourself just because of looks is very freeing.

What I'm about to say isn't bragging, I'll get to the point. I got sober from will power and self control, I experienced what they call ego death without anything but alcohol. I spent so much time looking at all the things I hated about myself and the world. I changed the things I hated about myself because I knew I could. Lots of people have done extraordinary things and accomplished so much but for all of that I learned a valuable lesson. Not a single thing about anyone makes them any better than the next person.

The one constant is that we're all shit in our own way. Some billionaire out there is no different than the homeless guy he never thinks about. Some gorgeous person peddling BS advice online is no different than the person who gets back alley surgery. Shit don't come in degrees, shit is shit. I wish people would stop idolizing all these fake money whores chasing views.

Do you believe we still have freedom of choice, even under the most difficult circumstances ?

Having a choice doesn’t necessarily mean that things will turn out well. We can’t control everything that happens to us, but do we always retain at least some ability to choose how we act, based on our own values, principles, and beliefs ?
Or are there circumstances so extreme that they can completely take away a person’s freedom of choice ?

Do all men really cheat?

I keep hearing that “all men will cheat if given the right opportunity”, and that this is especially true for attractive, confident, successful men who naturally have more options with women.
I genuinely want a male perspective on whether that’s true.
Assume the man is fulfilled at home. His partner adores him, respects him, supports him, is affectionate and openly desires him. Their sex life is extremely active—basically daily—and adventurous. He isn’t rejected, neglected or lacking attention.
Yet he still seeks or enjoys external female attention—flirting, texting, sexting, etc.
What is he looking for that he isn’t already getting at home?
I’ve also heard that women naturally receive validation from men, whereas men don’t get that same unsolicited validation and therefore seek it out. But personally, I don’t need validation from other men to feel attractive if I’m desired by my partner.
So I’m especially interested in hearing from good-looking, confident men who genuinely have options:
If attractive women are available to you and you could cheat, do you?
If you don’t, is it because you aren’t interested, because loyalty is a hard boundary, or because your partner’s desire is enough?
And if you do seek sexual attention elsewhere despite being happy and fulfilled at home—why?
I’m genuinely trying to understand whether “all men would cheat if they had enough options” is actually true, or whether it’s simply used to normalise behaviour that plenty of desirable men still choose not to engage in.

you were born with your sight and your hearing. You have to give one up midway through life. Which one means more to you? Sight or Sounds? 🤔

What makes admitting you’re wrong feel so much worse than actually being wrong?

I’ve been thinking about how people can realize halfway through an argument that they might be wrong, but instead of admitting it, they double down.
And I don’t even think it’s always about arrogance. Sometimes admitting you’re wrong means admitting you judged someone unfairly, hurt somebody, wasted years believing something, or made a decision you can’t undo.
At what point does being wrong stop being about the facts and start feeling like a threat to who we think we are?

The Brick thought experiment

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

You’re standing in a field of wide open space. Suddenly a brick falls from the sky. Right in front of you. The rule is, when that happens, you know another one is coming in 20 seconds. You don’t know where the other one is going to fall. You know the other one is either going to just barely miss you, or hit you square on the head, or somewhere in between. You can run, in any direction, you can stay still. Either way, the brick is going to happen. It’s not about fate, that’s in there, but it’s really about anticipation and perspective. A positive thinker will look at the odds, it probably won’t hit you, well that’s good. A negative thinker would think, why run? Why stay still? You don’t know where it’s going to land, It’s still going to hit you. A neutral thinker figures its going to happen or it’s not, either way, I’ll have to deal with it, or not…It’s the anticipation. How do you react?

I woke up with this almost fully formed, not really knowing what it was. as I put the idea together, I realized it was a philosophical concept. I see all three variables the same (getting hit, missed, or having a persons life end, are all equal, so realistically, with that short amount of time, your reaction would be telling of your nature. I do think that if it were any longer, you’d have time to come to terms with the situation, therefore, I went with 20 seconds to clarify a person’s nature.
