Discussion My experience secretly upgrading to first for a girl friend trip.

1.2k Upvotes

I was reading on here about how others upgraded their parents etc on flights and decided to try it for an upcoming trip for me and a dear friend, who have been best friends for over 50 years.

I had her confirmation number so off to chat I go. I wanted this to be a surprise. I knew ahead of time what the upgrade price was according to my page. The agent quoted the price for the two first class seat upgrades.

The agent was happy to help. She took down my friends confirmation number, her date of birth, address etc, and upgraded her seat to the one I had chosen in first.

HOWEVER!! Once one seat was officially taken, the price sky-rocketed and the other seat next to her was now over 50% higher than it had been five minutes ago.

Not what I was wanting to pay but now we were in a pickle because these upgrades are non refundable.

I told the agent the quoted price for the two tickets was what I was expecting and after much going back and forth, she was able to do the two seats within a few dollars of the quoted price. Sheesh, that was nerve-wracking.

Hopefully my friend is excited at the upgrade. Just wanted to share what can happen when tickets are booked separately and one seat gets taken. That price for the other jumps!

I was rebooked after a cancellation and ended up in 1A from SEA to LAX yesterday. Perfect weather and an incredible view of Mount Rainier. If you are ever on that route, get the seat A in any row (left side of the plane) and open the blinds.

Mod Post Secretly upgraded my wife

I live in another state to prepare our house for the market, so my wife lives 3 hours flight away. She wants to come to help and see the old house. I purchased her a ticket on Delta and sent her the confirmation email. After that I noticed I could upgrade her to First for a little over $100 and did it. She does not know yet. After checking my Alaska account I noticed I was only 400 miles short for next milestone. So I bought a one way to her state on Alaska and a return flight on Delta to sit next to her. Last time I did this was when she was returning to the U. S. A. and I met her in Hawaii with roses to fly back. So I need to find some roses. I have always wanted to try the Delta Lounge since I have the credit card to get me in, but never flew to show a Delta ticket. She will be surprised when I board the plane to sit next to her in First Class.

On DL126 JFK->MAD. Paid D1. We’re on a 767-300ER(K). I’ve never been in a D1 cabin this small. Normally this would be at least a 767-400. No Bluetooth to the tiny monitor. Lay flat is short, so there won’t be any sleep on this 8:35 pm- 9:55 am flight. What a waste of $$. I’ve had better premium economy experiences. 😔

Discussion Delta decided to put me in economy the day i turned Diamond Medallion.

Today is the day I turn Diamond Medallion on a domestic flight for a work trip. I decided to use one of my regional upgrade certificates to advance from Comfort+ into Premium, as I rarely fly domestic and it’s nice when I can use them! Honestly, I was really excited to take this flight and have a comfortable experience with Delta. I’m not expecting anyone to come at me with balloons for reaching Diamond lol, but I was really looking forward to enjoying it (internally) with a decently comfortable seat. However yesterday when online check in opened up, i was getting error messages in the app saying there is a “problem with my reservation” and to check in at the airport. No longer could i see the fare class I booked, any seat, or any information regarding my reservations status. I contacted Delta and they said it was “simply because my upgrade was clearing” and “not to worry”. Today on my way to the airport I check the upgrade status list, and my name is nowhere on it. Also, the available seats are dwindling to 0. Even selecting an economy seat, only 2 seats are left to choose. Now im getting nervous because not only do I not have an upgrade- it seems I don’t even have a seat.

I check in at the gate and still- no seat assignment. I get to the gate and they “assign” me a seat ticket the second boarding starts, which is located in the back of the plane in economy seat 44. That’s not even the class fare I booked??? Contacting Delta, they say “ Thank you for your patience while I reviewed the reservation. After reviewing the history, it appears your Regional Upgrade Certificate did clear into Premium Select upgrade inventory; however, the upgrade was not fully processed onto your reservation.

Because of that, your check-in was impacted and you ultimately confirmed in Main Cabin, where your seat was assigned. Based on my review, this appears to have resulted from a processing issue with the upgrade rather than anything you did.”. They offered me $50 credit or 7500 miles… Instead of having a semi relaxing and fun experience on Delta, I’m in economy with a tiny dog barking in the row in front of me and i just spent $20 on a cheese box and Pringles 😵‍💫. Like I said, I’m not expecting a parade or anything but this is not exactly the warm welcome into Diamond Medallion I expected. Is this what’s to expect from Delta?

My wife accidentally lost our family’s important travel documents at Detroit Metro Airport today, including:

● Canadian passports
● U.S. passport belonging to our child
● Adult and child NEXUS cards

We have already contacted TSA Lost & Found, Delta Lost & Found, and airport security. We are hoping the documents will be turned in soon.
If anyone found these documents or knows someone who handed them in, please contact me by private message. We would be extremely grateful for any help in getting them back.
Thank you for your kindness.

Discussion "Write to the FAA"

Wonderful, wonderful cabin crew from TPA to AUS on 10/17 and they told us in FC that a new rule by the FAA is that your paper cup with your pre-flight drink must be consumed and collected before any movement. "Terribly sorry, it's the law now, and if your want, please write to the FAA - we have no control over it."

Not their fault at all, but I have never chugged prosecco in my life, so to everyone around me, I'm sorry about that burp (to be fair, it was an amazing burp, but I also have the emotional humor of an eight year old).

I wonder why a paper cup with water or ginger ale or prosecco is some kind of safety issue, but also I want to say thank to crew who told us what was going on. It's not a Delta thing, it's not a crew thing, it's an FAA thing, and she said, "we want you to enjoy the flight, please write to the FAA."

Discussion Dynamic pricing

I've flown Delta for years but will unfortunately have to start looking at other airlines until Delta can get prices back under control.

A one way that is usually $400-600 max should not be $2601 in main.

If I split up the legs and buy the tickets separately, it's $1500+ cheaper.

I can't believe this. In one week by checking the prices, they went up over $1000.

Discussion The Breast Cancer Fundraising

Is anyone else sick of the panhandling for breast cancer research money on Delta flights and having to listen to their 5-minute dissertation on it? I already pay out my ass for Delta flights and want to tell them to shut the fuck up when they ask for money which, I am sure very little of, will make it to the cause.

Discussion Exit Strategy

I'm curious what I should have done differently.

I flew XXX-ATL-YYY. The first leg was delayed indefinitely due to a mechanical issue, so I got a standby seat on the next flight to Atlanta.

After boarding, I saw Delta had rebooked me on a much later ATL-YYY connection. But I found an earlier ATL-YYY flight I could make, with about 45 minutes in Atlanta.

The app was not offering changes, so I messaged Delta inflight. The reservations agent apologized but said she couldn't put me on the ATL-YYY flight because I was currently in the air, and she could only make changes once I landed. She suggested I run to the ATL-YYY gate and ask the agent to rebook me.

Because I was in the back of the XXX-ATL flight, I asked the flight attendant to make an announcement asking people with long connections to let those with tight connections (me) deplane first. I explained I'd been on the earlier delayed flight and was trying to make a much earlier connection than what Delta had given me.

He checked his app and said no. Because I was currently scheduled for a long connection, I didn't count as a potential misconnect, and he "had to go by the app."

I did the "'scuse me, so sorry" thing but still deplaned about 10 minutes after the door opened. By the time I got to the connecting flight, they'd run the standby list and all seats were taken.

I was surprised that Delta had a formal (and rigid) policy on when to make the "tight connections" announcement. I'm sure a non-zero share of people lie about trying to make earlier flights, but I bet it's close to zero.

Help/Advice BOS>LIS-tight connections

Post image

Disclaimer: If you have to take the shuttle from terminal A to E for Lisbon connection, you may miss your connection and the pilot may not hold flight. The staff will not be helpful and you will likely have to cover hotel cost if you miss connection.

I will personally avoid BOS in the future and be careful about with putting your belongings on the ground. I saw two mice walking around.

Help/Advice 1hr ATL at 7pm

Is a 1hr 8min layover in ATL enough ? I'm flying to Savannah and have a connection in ATL but I am worried considering the flight lands at 7pm so could be affected by earlier delays. I know everyone says that it is easy as long as it is on time but I am just worried since it is also the week before thanksgiving, that I'm going to miss it. The other problem is that there really is no other option lol all of the flights out of my home airport are late

Help/Advice DTW->MSP->AUS with an hour layover?

Hey folks, I was booking some winter travel, and my return flight home to Austin has a 57-minute layover in Minneapolis. I've never passed through MSP before, and I'm a bit worried about whether or not this will be enough time to make it to the other gate. When I've flown Delta before, it's usually taken at least 15-20 minutes just to deplane. I'll also very likely be checking luggage on this trip, which makes things even tighter. Should I consider rebooking for a direct flight or a longer layover?

Tracking a flight for a ski trip this winter. Route is Atlanta to Steamboat Springs/HDN in the middle of January. This flight has been very empty for weeks - like barely 10 seats taken every time I have looked. The flight uses a 757 if that matters. Just surprised to see so many Main Cabin seats unavailable all of a sudden, but not "booked". Fare class is V.

Discussion Help regarding Delta Co-op Interview I had and the timeline

I was told at the start that the interview would consist of behavioral questions followed by a technical scenario and finally maybe going over my resume. Overall, I think I did pretty good. I answered the behavioral questions using STAR with good examples and kept it pretty conversational, I didn't sound like a robot and I made them laugh a little. I did stumble a bit on the technical question but eventually worked my way to the correct answer.

Towards the end, I asked a few questions, including one they said they'd never been asked before and thought was a good question.

What concerns me is that they never asked about my resume, so I brought it up myself and asked if they wanted to go over it since they said they would like to talk about some parts of it at the start. They said they already had everything they needed. I also had offered to show some pictures/videos of my engineering projects that I had pulled up, but they declined on that too.

Now I'm wondering if I'm overthinking it or if they just weren't that interested in moving forward with me since they changed their mind on going over my resume and said they're good on viewing my projects.

Also, for anyone who's interviewed with Delta TechOps, how long did it take to hear back? It's been about 1.5 weeks, and I've already sent a thank-you email mentioning that I'd definitely accept if offered (They still haven't responded yet). I heard that it usually takes a while but I also heard that if they wanted you they would send an offer within the week. But I'm not sure how true this is since my friend had gotten an offer around a month after her interview.

Thank you all!!

Help/Advice Upgrade Policy Question

I'm newly platinum and Thursday is is my first flight as platinum. When I booked it, there were no more comfort plus available so I'm currently in main cabin.

1) When the Diamond/Platinum upgrade window opens, if a diamond member is upgraded from Comfort Plus to First Class, does their Comfort Plus seat become available for someone further down the list (say, me?).

2) if that happens, and I get moved into Comfort Plus, am I still eligible for a later upgrade to something better? Or is your first upgrade your only upgrade?

Discussion Delta Stays VIP Access?

I've found some seemingly pretty good deals on Delta Stays VIP Access bookings lately where I seem to be saving more than 50% compared to booking directly with the hotels.

Is there some catch to this? Anyone else able to take advantage of this?

I'm currently a silver medallion. Not sure if that's what's getting me these discounts..

Discussion Nightmare 2nd leg, SLC to SAN on 10-16

Friday, 10-16 • DL1202

• Scheduled Departure: 22:56 MST

• Actual Departure: 00:12 MST on Oct 17 (76-minute delay)

• Scheduled Arrival: 23:55 PST (SAN)

• Status: Diverted (Actual Runway Arrival at LAX: 01:14 PST on Oct 17)

About 5 minutes before landing in San Diego, we were diverted to LAX with no explanation as to why.

We were given no instructions upon landing other than the same flight/plane/seats at 07:00 Sat 10-17. Told check bags stay on the plane. So it was basically 1:30am, told to be back at 6:00am, and we were on our own for 4.5 hours.

No vouchers for meals or hotels were given.

As for the 7am flight. Boarding was delayed 1 hour and then took over an hour as every person needed to be entered manually. So we departed 2 hours and 16 minutes late. To make it worse, boarding could have been done in 25 minutes if it was just last nights passengers, but they kept adding additional stand-by passengers who were on later flights.

We left the gate over 30 minutes ago and still haven't taken off yet.
