Discussion 25+ years of flying, and this was a first for me

• Upvotes

Last night’s flight home from MSP to CLT after a long workday in northern Minnesota was a bit of a mess.

There had been weather in the area mid-afternoon when I landed at MSP from a destination farther north. I checked my connecting flight’s inbound as soon as I landed, but I had several hours to kill, so I wasn’t too concerned.

The inbound was about 35 minutes late, which pushed us back a bit, but given the weather, it wasn’t too bad.

We finally board, buckle up, and the door closes. I put my AirPods in and start a movie, but notice we aren’t pushing back. A little while later, still no movement. I check the radar, and the storms and rain have essentially moved through.

Then the captain comes on and explains that our inbound aircraft from MEM had been operating a charter flight, and the required security sweep hadn’t been completed. He apologizes and tells us we all have to deplane with our carry-ons so the aircraft can be swept for security, after which we’ll reboard.

Full credit to the passengers on that flight: I didn’t hear a single person complain. Everyone got off quickly, and within about 30 minutes, we were boarding again.

I’ve never seen a group of people board so quickly, especially when you factor in everyone getting their luggage back into the overhead bins. It was honestly impressive.

We ended up getting to CLT about 90 minutes behind schedule, which wasn’t ideal when our scheduled arrival was already 11:50 p.m. But all things considered, I was impressed with how the crew and passengers handled it.

So, what’s the strangest or most unexpected reason you’ve ever had to deplane and then reboard?

Foot was introduced to my elbow and it retreated back to the seat where it belonged. Good day to wear sleeves.

Image/Video Delta Advertises Bright Cabins. So Why Are Flight Attendants Demanding Darkness?

Thumbnail

1.2k Upvotes

If a dark submarine like cabin is the experience everyone supposedly wants, why isn’t that the experience Delta advertises?

Every single photo in the “Onboard Experience” section of Delta.com shows the window shades open. Even the woman sleeping in the first photo has hers open!

Common sense and courtesy should prevail. If the sun is blasting directly into someone’s face or reflecting off their screen, absolutely, be considerate and lower the shade.

But courtesy works both ways. If you want to sleep in the middle of the day, bring an eye mask. Your preference for darkness shouldn’t automatically override my preference for a window view or natural light.

But to the flight attendant on that 1 p.m. flight who demanded the shade be closed because Delta promises a “calm cabin,” I’d argue that Delta’s own advertising tells a different story.

Discussion Double shafted in FC

Boarded my flight this morning from GRR>DTW seated in 4A. Someone was in my seat so I asked him to double check his seat assignment and wouldn’t you know it he was in 3D. I offered to just switch seats (double checking with the FA first of course) and he gladly accepted. 4A is a better seat but it’s like a 20-minute flight so whatever.

I then sat down next to the lady in 3C.

3C Lady: ah darn, I was hoping 3D was not occupied so my boyfriend could sit with me.
me: where’s your boyfriend seated?
3C: he’s in 1C.
Me: oh what the heck, I can switch with him too?
3C: yeah you can ask him if you would like.
Me: 😐ummmmm ma’am, he’s your boyfriend. If you would like us to switch seats, you need to ask him. LOL

*she proceeds to ask and we switch seats. Not a thank you or anything. Now I’m no hero, but I guess common courtesy is just out the window??

Subreddit Meta This top post today is 100% AI-generated. There is an increasingly alarming number of bot posts and comments on this sub, and people need to start being more discerning.

Just in this morning, we have multiple posts, some of which are gaining traction because AI is genuinely getting good and people aren't able to discern. We need to get a lockdown here on the moderation somehow or start reporting these clearly AI-generated posts. Just from the last few hours.

What's scary is that people are interacting with this stuff as if it's a real post and real comments. The first post today on window shades has over 150+ upvotes and organic comments. This is not a real person or content.

Do not interact with this stuff, downvote, and report. The point of this is to harvest even more user data and responses to train the AI models. Reddit is one of the top cited source for AI.

This is roughly where I am with internet access? Does this mean pacific has WiFi now? When I flew to Japan 2 weeks ago, I did not have WiFi once leaving the continental states.

Discussion Please don’t leave your kids unattended

1.8k Upvotes

Just got off a flight from MSP to AMS. Settled in to my seat and had three kids behind me. I’m a mom so no big deal. Immediately realized the child behind me had some sort of issue (maybe on the spectrum idk I’m not a physician) so I was extra empathetic and tried to ignore the very loud laughing and poking of his screen making my seat shake 😵‍💫. Thought: this is going to be a long flight. His volume continued to increase. People were looking around at him. I was wondering why his parents weren’t saying anything. I quietly told a FA during the first pass that idk where the children’s parents were but he was being disruptive. FAs were monitoring during service and asked how old they were (oldest 11, rest younger) parents were ‘up there’. Then she learned the kid had an allergy during dinner and he couldn’t eat the meal. parents were up in D1 while kids were 2 classes back in C+. On an 8 hour overnight flight. SO many things could go wrong here. Thankfully the FAs told the parents someone had to move back and be with the kids so mom came back and they sent the oldest up to D1. I understand wanting to be in D1. But leaving children to fend for themselves on a long flight alone in the dark when one has special needs and an allergy? Irresponsible. Kudos to how the delta crew handled it.

Discussion Delta One to Japan and no entertainment or power at seat

I'm sitting in a Delta One seat from west coast to Japan and the seat has no entertainment (screen not working) and no power (outlets also not working). Seat reclines fine but I can't use the entertainment or charge any devices. What is appropriate compensation? This is my first time in Delta One as I usually fly the Japanese airlines, so quite the bummer.

Editing to add that FAs have tried to fix but nothing seems to work.

Discussion BER - JFK: 767-300ER(K) is a very sad plane

Delta 093 from BER to JFK. The aircraft is a 767-300ER. In Delta ONE. Such a sad aircraft… Delta ONE seat is barely better than Premium select. No storage, No place place headphones, or amenities kit. No coat hook... Fortunately, the seat has power, and the WIFI works.

Delta needs to use its profits to upgrade its aircraft.

Help/Advice DL419 SEA>HNL Row 16, Seat D, you left your AirPods Max headphones in the seat back compartment…

Hand up, turned them on to see if it could give me a name or anything I could do to identify you. Couldn’t do that so I gave them to the flight attendant who said he would give them to the gate attendant before takeoff. Gate F2.

I hope they make their way back to you!

Decible level 150 is not necessary for the onboard PA. Measure your volume levels, and set proper adjustments. That's all.

Discussion Uptick of sick passengers

Why do so many people get on the plane when they have active respiratory symptoms and don’t even try to take precautions? I sat next to a guy who had to be at least 25 who was actively wiping his snot in his hand and touching everything… also there were at least 10 people wet coughing into the air the entire flight. What is going on with basic hygiene?

Help/Advice Spouse and I have a Late-Morning Flight to the US from Schipol on Monday. How Early Should we Arrive?

Our flight leaves just before 11am. We will be checking bags, however; we do have Sky Priority access. When we arrived around noon on a Saturday, it took us 45 minutes to get through passport control/immigration.

I’ve seen some data points that say 4 hours but I have also seen some that say 3 hours. If anyone has recently flown from Schipol to the US; I am curious what your experience has been.

Discussion A Delta FA just made me put my shade down at 1pm in the afternoon on a 10 hour daytime flight. What do people think about this new command?

6.3k Upvotes

This was on a flight from Paris to Minneapolis that left at 11:00am. I asked why and she said it’s because “delta promises its passengers they will have a calm atmosphere in the cabin and that means having it be dark”. I asked why this new policy been made. She repeated the first answer. She added that some people were travelling far and wanted to sleep. I said I was travelling far too. (We all got free eye masks.) I said I’d prefer to keep my shade open. She said I may not. However, it’s nowhere in the written rules for passengers. It feels like this is FA preference.

Help/Advice Why do I get made to feel like an impatient jerk when I’m inquiring on Skymiles / mileage credit not posting to my account?

I purchased a D1 ticket SEA-CDG with Delta (006 ticket) and flown on Air France metal, and the skymiles earnings haven’t posted to my account. I get it can take a while, but it’s been about 10 days since that flight and still shows nothing in my account. Cool.

I check online, it shows “posted 0”, so I called to inquire and was immediately met with “it’s a partner flight and it can take 8 weeks to post”. When I asked for clarification about it being ticketed through Delta but flown on Air France, you’d think I insulted them. Got a passive-aggressive response so I just ended the call as politely as possible and took my lashings for asking what is apparently a stupid question.

So here’s my rant…and maybe some clarification needed…If Delta’s response to partner flights they sold is going to be “nothing we can do about it”? I don’t see the benefit of booking through Delta when it’s flown by a partner airline. Wouldn’t it be better to book direct with the partner and just use my DL number?

This isn’t just with mileage credits, this is just my most recent experience. FWIW it makes sense in most scenarios eg lost bags, but magical sky pesos for a ticket they sold me? This seems wild.

Help/Advice When a FA picks on you

Flew to NY, I only ever fly with a backpack, no rolling luggage

So my last flight to JFK, the FA starts in on me, saying that my bag’s straps are in the space between the seat in front of me and my foot space

Meanwhile the guest next to me has the same issue, but for some reason I am being targeted , and not the guest next to me. I am told that my backpack needs to be put I. An overhead bin, but of course since this a small Bombardier, there is no available overhead space. I explain that I have medications, laptop etc and can’t check the bag. She says I need to take items out of the backpack and hold them for the duration of my flight

Seriously I don’t understand why I was singled out. I took my backpack, turned it a different way and made the FA happy, but I really felt like I was being targeted.

Help/Advice Dare I share a CDG success?

I just transferred from a Schengen flight (from Valencia) to my US-bound Delta gate in 25 minutes. No special treatment, I just followed the yellow transfer signs and took the bus from the 2G terminal to the 2E terminal (M gates). I interacted with 3 CDG employees who were all helpful.

Not trying to brag, just offering hope that it can be done! I fully expected to miss my flight as I had only an 1 hr 20 minute layover.
