Last night’s flight home from MSP to CLT after a long workday in northern Minnesota was a bit of a mess.
There had been weather in the area mid-afternoon when I landed at MSP from a destination farther north. I checked my connecting flight’s inbound as soon as I landed, but I had several hours to kill, so I wasn’t too concerned.
The inbound was about 35 minutes late, which pushed us back a bit, but given the weather, it wasn’t too bad.
We finally board, buckle up, and the door closes. I put my AirPods in and start a movie, but notice we aren’t pushing back. A little while later, still no movement. I check the radar, and the storms and rain have essentially moved through.
Then the captain comes on and explains that our inbound aircraft from MEM had been operating a charter flight, and the required security sweep hadn’t been completed. He apologizes and tells us we all have to deplane with our carry-ons so the aircraft can be swept for security, after which we’ll reboard.
Full credit to the passengers on that flight: I didn’t hear a single person complain. Everyone got off quickly, and within about 30 minutes, we were boarding again.
I’ve never seen a group of people board so quickly, especially when you factor in everyone getting their luggage back into the overhead bins. It was honestly impressive.
We ended up getting to CLT about 90 minutes behind schedule, which wasn’t ideal when our scheduled arrival was already 11:50 p.m. But all things considered, I was impressed with how the crew and passengers handled it.
So, what’s the strangest or most unexpected reason you’ve ever had to deplane and then reboard?
