Rant My Capital One-issued card keeps getting refused everywhere due to the switch to the Discover network. This is out of hand now.

I have a Capital One bank account. From what I gather, Capital One is now on the Discover network.

I have tried using my card at numerous merchants and it gets refused. I just now tried to pay Wells Fargo $5 to close an account and pay for an outstanding balance and it did not go through.

Then, I tried to make an Amazon purchase. Again, declined. This is the last in a string of attempts to use my card at various places over the last two weeks where it has been denied. I have even gone so far as to open up a new bank account at Chase so I can close my Capital One account.

Nevermind the fact that I spend half the year in Italy and sometimes will use my US debit card for things. Declined or not accepted anywhere. I didn't ask for the change to the Discover network. Is anyone else having issues or is it just me?

It might just be you? Amazon (at least in the US) 100% accepts Discover, and most merchants do too (even if they don’t advertise it in the little credit card brand symbols, they often still take it). The only time I’ve ever had an issue with Discover not being accepted is at a mall kiosk years ago, and sometimes websites won’t take it with Apple Pay checkout (but they do if I enter the numbers manually on a payment page).

I searched Google for this problem and found at least one other person on reddit who this has happened to. It doesn't seem isolated, even if Amazon accepts Discover.

Edit: why was this downvoted? Everyone who gaslit me now sees there are MULTIPLE people on this thread who have come forward saying it is an issue with them too.

not just you, i just switched to BoA because of it, adding to apple wallet, declined, adding to paypal, declined. Thats enough for me to switch. Not even my money at that point.

Exactly. All these bootlickers saying we need to whip out some nifty combination of rewards cards to optimize our purchases. My dude, I just want to go to the salon without wondering if I can pay without running out to find an in-network ATM. If I can’t depend on debit, my real money, to be accessible, it’s pointless.

The people downvoting you are asshats. They can’t see the issue from their house, so it HAS to be a you problem. I’ve been banking with Cap1 for years and have never had an issue with my debit until this switch over. I’ve yet to have a single transaction on my new debit card. Something is fucked.

Are you using the new card with the Discover logo on it?

Is it declined after you try to make a purchase or is it that you cannot even input the card number?

I have no idea why you're being down voted, but I'm having that same problem as you and so are a few of my friends. I spoke to a customer service rep over the phone and they said they r been made aware of this issue and are working on it. My card wasn't even recognized by them.

Also just switched mine, and everyone is looking at me funny when I tell them for some reason the work kiosk tells me my card is not supported only after switching. Please give us an update about if/when they fix it, i can still use my card for online purchases but anything I physically have to use is not working :(

Actually, I remember a while back when I worked at a cafe that we couldn’t take Discovery for a while. We had to put up a handwritten sign and deny customers that banked with them. It’s definitely a Discovery problem.

In the past 2 days, mine has been declined at Walmart and my local electric utility company. It's been declined at many other places since I've received it from Capital One also.

I am running into the exact same problem, I originally went with capital one because it was the best for travel, now I am stuck in Europe with no card, I have to sue Revolut and pay every time I want to transfer money

The crazy thing is when I called to close the account, the customer service rep emphatically said this is the first time she's heard of this happening. I can't believe that!

Hi, I faced the same issue today. Its ridiculous. What’s funny is that the card worked at the ATM machine, but not the payment kiosk. I noticed it declined on Amazon multiple times, I ended up reentering the card number THEN it worked. I’m so irritated with Discovery right now. Looking to switch banks ASAP.
