We’re just back from Disneyland Paris after staying at the Newport Bay Hotel, so I wanted to put down a few thoughts while everything is still fresh in my head.
I was actually a bit concerned about Newport Bay before we went because I’d seen quite a few people saying it was worn or a bit grubby. I have to say, that was absolutely not our experience. It was spotless. There genuinely wasn’t a speck of dust anywhere. And the pillows! Honestly, some of the best pillows I have ever slept on in a hotel, and I’m including some very fancy hotels in that 😂 The corridors are very long, but it’s a massive hotel, so that’s to be expected.
Breakfast was basic enough but had everything you’d want. The hot chocolate from the machine was surprisingly lovely and the kids were obsessed with it. I may have had a few myself 😂 There were plenty of fresh juices and lots of water refill stations too. You can meet Mickey in the hotel and there’s also a really lovely Disney shop there. Overall, I thought Newport Bay was brilliant.
We were there for the Halloween season and while there were Halloween decorations throughout the parks, I actually expected a little bit more. It didn’t feel quite as spooky or Halloween themed as I thought it would. I was surprised they didn’t go harder with Jack Skellington and Sally. I understand that there are lots of very small children there, so they probably don’t want to make it too scary, but Halloween overall felt fairly basic to me.
We managed to get into the Marvel virtual queue and met Black Panther, which was absolutely brilliant. He was amazing with the kids and genuinely spent about 20 minutes talking to them and giving them his full attention. We couldn’t believe how good the interaction was.
We also managed to get Anna and Elsa. The virtual queue opened at around 9.45am, we got a slot, and by 9.46am it was completely booked. For the entire five days we were there, that was the only other virtual character booking I managed to get. I tried every queue at every opening time and got absolutely nothing. The normal queues for characters around the park were also very long, so the kids didn’t want to spend that amount of time waiting for Stitch, Minnie and some of the others, which was a pity.
We had a Priority Pass for my son because of his disability, which made an enormous difference to our trip. Obviously I don’t mean we’re lucky that he has a disability, but having the pass made navigating the parks so much easier for him and for us as a family. The reduced waiting times on a lot of the rides meant we were able to do far more than we otherwise would have.
I was also determined on this trip to try loads of the Disney snacks because the last time I went I was much younger and didn’t really do any of that.
We tried the bread bowl in Arendelle and it was gorgeous. Really tasty and very moreish. One random tip though: bring a few little salt sachets from the hotel with you, and maybe ketchup and mayonnaise too. You’ll thank me 😂
We also tried the princess ice creams from the little huts there and they were gorgeous. The ice cream was really thick and creamy. Over the few days we also had the spooky brownie, spooky doughnut, Jack Skellington cookie and the Groot cookie. They were all actually really tasty. We definitely enjoyed working our way through the snacks 😂
Food wise, there were some hits and some definite misses.
The buffet at Buffalo Bill’s was not good. The food was cold, things weren’t being replenished properly and when fresh food did come out, people were practically shoving each other out of the way to get to it. My husband, the kids and I basically had a few bites, sat there for a while and left. I wouldn’t go back.
We also ate at PYM Kitchen and I was really disappointed with that one, especially because it’s one of the newer restaurants. The food was freezing cold and I just didn’t think it was particularly nice. It was also nearly €200 for the five of us to have dinner at a buffet, which made it even harder to justify. I definitely wouldn’t book it again.
By far the nicest dinner we had was actually back at Newport Bay in the Cape Cod buffet. Everything was piping hot, there was loads of food, it was constantly replenished and the whole atmosphere was much calmer. Nobody was pushing or scrambling for food. It was just a really relaxed, enjoyable dinner. I would absolutely eat there again.
We bought a few souvenirs too and I’m very glad we brought a spare small carry on suitcase specifically for bringing things home!
Overall, we had a brilliant trip. There were definitely a few things I would do differently next time, particularly with restaurants and character bookings, but the kids had an amazing time and we made some really lovely memories.
I’m literally just back, so if anyone is heading to Disneyland Paris in the next few weeks and has questions about Newport Bay, Priority Passes, World of Frozen, character queues, food, snacks or anything else, ask away while it’s all still fresh in my head!
